Why the Boeing 777X Has Folding Wingtips but Can’t Fly With Them Folded

The 777X folds its wingtips on the ground to meet airport gate constraints. In flight, they must be extended and locked; FAA rules require safeguards against takeoff otherwise.

The Boeing 777X’s wingtips fold to help the aircraft fit airport gates on the ground—not to change its wingspan in flight. With the tips extended, its wingspan is 235 feet; folded, it is 212 feet. The FAA’s 2017 special conditions treat the tips as fixed, locked parts of the wing during flight and require safeguards against takeoff before they are secured in the flight position.

Why does the 777X have folding wingtips?

The 777X has an unusually long, high-aspect-ratio composite wing, designed to improve aerodynamic efficiency. But a 235-foot wingspan would be too wide for many airport gate and taxiway layouts. Folding each wingtip on the ground reduces the span enough for Code E gate compatibility, allowing airlines to use more existing airport infrastructure. The FAA lists the aircraft’s span as 235 feet with the tips extended and 212 feet with them folded in its 2017 special conditions.

The span difference works out to about 11.5 feet per side, calculated from the FAA’s figures; that is a derived estimate, not a separately published Boeing specification. The tips do not contain fuel, and Boeing’s stated design preference is to use the longer span in flight for aerodynamic efficiency.

Can the 777X fly with its wingtips folded?

No. The tips are intended to move only on the ground. In flight, each tip must be extended and locked so it acts as a fixed structural part of the wing. The FAA’s special conditions require the design to prevent takeoff if a tip is not correctly positioned and secured for flight, and to make such a takeoff extremely improbable, without a path caused by a single failure.

The FAA treated the hazard as comparable to taking off with gust locks engaged—a potentially catastrophic condition. As general engineering reasoning, a takeoff with shortened wings would alter the aircraft’s lift and structural loading from the configuration for which it is intended to fly. The FAA’s published analogy establishes the seriousness of the risk; it does not provide a more detailed plain-language explanation of the folded-tip aerodynamics.

What stops a takeoff with the tips folded?

The FAA issued 10 special conditions because existing airworthiness rules did not specifically cover this folding-wingtip design. They require multiple forms of protection rather than relying on a single warning or component:

  • Position and locking safeguards: The design must provide a means to prevent takeoff unless the tips are set and secured for flight.
  • Failure protection: A folded-tip takeoff must be extremely improbable and must not result from one failure alone.
  • Crew alerting: Pilots must receive appropriate alerts if the tips are not ready for flight.
  • Ground durability and handling: The tips and their mechanism must withstand a 65-knot horizontal ground gust from any direction. The requirements also address crosswind rollout while the tips transition, including unlikely asymmetric folding, visibility of position lights when the tips are raised, and securing the tips to protect ground personnel.

Simple Flying’s secondary-source account describes escalating cockpit alerts if the tips are not extended and locked before the aircraft enters the runway, followed by a loud takeoff-warning alarm if power is added while they remain unlocked. That specific description is media reporting, not a verbatim FAA statement.

When are the tips extended at the airport?

Airport operational guidance advises extending the tips within 1,500 feet of the start of the takeoff roll. The FAA’s Engineering Brief 94B is the relevant guidance. The published figure is an operational-planning distance, not permission to take off with the tips folded: they must be extended and secured for flight before takeoff.

Does the folding-wingtip feature mean the 777X is certified?

No. The FAA’s wingtip special conditions date from 2017, but they do not amount to certification of the complete 777-9. As of October 8, 2026, final certification was still pending. Aviation A2Z reported that the program cleared TIA Phase 3 on November 6, 2025, received Phase 4A approval in March 2026, and began Phase 4B in June 2026; it also reported more than 4,800 flight hours across about 1,700 flights by July 2026, roughly half of certification testing. Boeing’s first-delivery expectation was 2027, with Lufthansa as launch operator, while Airways Magazine said U.S. certification appeared likely to slip into 2027. These program milestones are separate from the design rule that requires the wingtips to be locked for flight.
