The Kawasaki KLR650 has a long-running reputation for reliability, and Kawasaki itself describes its engine as reliable and trusted. But the available evidence does not prove it is the most reliable motorcycle on the market: there is no comparable, independent study ranking it against other motorcycles. The useful conclusion is narrower: understand what supports the reputation, what complaint data can and cannot tell you, and how to assess a specific KLR650 before buying.
Why the KLR650 has a reliability reputation
The KLR650 is a dual-purpose motorcycle built around a long-running platform. Kawasaki has made reliability part of its public description of the bike. In its 2022 U.S. announcement, Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A., called the engine “one of the most well-known, reliable, and trusted engines in the motorcycle industry.” That is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent comparison or a measured lifetime-reliability result. Kawasaki’s 2022 KLR650 announcement
The same 2022 redesign introduced fuel injection to the KLR650 and revised several engine, electrical, and chassis components. Kawasaki said the changes were intended to improve durability or performance. They help explain how the company positions the newer model, but do not by themselves establish how long the motorcycle lasts in real-world use. Kawasaki’s 2022 KLR650 announcement
Is it the most reliable motorcycle on the market?
That superlative is not established by the available evidence. A sound ranking would compare motorcycles using equivalent measures—for example, verified failures per vehicle or mile, warranty claims or repair records, model-year and mileage exposure, repair severity and cost, maintenance needs, parts availability, and operating conditions. No comparable KLR650-versus-peer dataset or neutral market-wide reliability ranking is available here.

Kawasaki’s reliability statements support saying the model has a strong manufacturer-promoted reputation. They do not show that it outlasts every other motorcycle, or even establish a failure rate against specific competitors.
What the complaint numbers actually show
RoadVitals’ compilation of NHTSA data, accessed in 2026, lists 207 owner-reported complaints covering KLR650 model years 1993–2024. It also reports 87 exterior-lighting component mentions and 68 engine mentions. A single complaint can identify more than one component, so these are mentions, not necessarily unique incidents for each category. RoadVitals’ KLR650 complaint summary

- Kawasaki Oil Filter
- O-Ring and Drain Washer
- Edwards Funnel, Towel, Gloves and Spout
These figures are not failure rates or reliability scores. RoadVitals cautions that complaints are generally unverified before publication and that raw counts are influenced by how many motorcycles were sold and how long they have been in service. A complaint is not a finding that a defect exists. The counts can show what owners chose to report in that dataset, but cannot establish how likely a KLR650 is to fail.
What changed with the 2022 redesign
Kawasaki’s 2022 announcement describes a broad set of revisions, presenting them as improvements to performance, durability, or reliability. The listed changes include fuel injection, revised cam profiles and exhaust-pipe diameter, a revised clutch, increased ACG output, and changes to the battery and starter-related components. Kawasaki also cited a stronger cam-chain-guide material and shape, an integrated rear frame, a longer swingarm, and a larger swingarm pivot shaft. Kawasaki’s 2022 KLR650 announcement

Those details are useful when comparing generations, but the announcement is not a long-term independent test. It does not establish that the revisions extended service life or that earlier versions are less reliable. Treat each bike’s year, condition, maintenance, and modifications as relevant rather than assuming all KLR650s are interchangeable.
What the 2026 U.S. lineup includes

A model-wide reputation cannot tell you whether a particular used motorcycle has been maintained or repaired properly. Focus your inspection on the individual bike’s history and condition.

- ANODIZED SURFACE - After the treatment of anodizing process, the surface of the klr650 foot pegs is supplemented with a beautiful protective film, which enhances the corrosion resistance of the foot pegs and does not fade after long-term use.
- SIMPLE STRUCTURE - The structure of this dirt bike foot pegs is simple, so installation is not difficult. The Y-shaped structure of the pedal can prevent dirt from accumulating and make cleaning more convenient.
- Review maintenance records. Look for documentation that matches the motorcycle’s model year and variant, and ask about gaps in service history.
- Inspect for neglect or modifications. Check the overall condition and ask what has been changed, why, and whether original parts are available.
- Check recalls by VIN. Kawasaki’s U.S. recall portal requires a VIN/HIN for a vehicle-specific lookup and displays U.S. recall information dating back to October 8, 2011. A model-year recall count does not prove that a particular bike is affected or that work remains outstanding. Kawasaki recall lookup
- Use the correct manual. Kawasaki’s Owner Center provides owner’s and service manuals, parts, oils, support, and warranty resources. Select a manual for the exact model year and variant rather than assuming one document covers every generation. Kawasaki Owner Center
What prospective owners can reasonably conclude
The KLR650’s durability reputation is real as a reputation, and Kawasaki has highlighted reliability-oriented design intent. The available complaint compilation adds context about owner reports but cannot measure failure probability. Without a like-for-like reliability study, calling the KLR650 the most reliable motorcycle on the market goes beyond what the evidence supports.
