The 2026 Mazda CX-5 makes its strongest case with a combination that can be easy to miss in a spec-sheet comparison: all-wheel drive is standard, its redesigned cabin offers more rear-seat room, and it has earned the IIHS’s top safety award. It is not the right pick for every compact-SUV shopper: its launch powertrain is not hybrid, and the Toyota RAV4 can deliver far better fuel economy. The CX-5 deserves a closer look if road feel, all-weather traction and safety matter more to you than minimizing fuel use.
What makes the 2026 CX-5 easy to overlook?
Compact crossovers are often compared by cargo capacity and miles per gallon. Those are important measures, but they can obscure a vehicle’s everyday strengths. The CX-5 pairs standard i-Activ all-wheel drive with a conventional six-speed automatic, and one recent comparison preferred its driving feel to that of the tested RAV4. That combination may appeal to a shopper who wants confident traction and an engaging drive without moving up to a larger SUV.
The 2026 model is an all-new third generation. Mazda says it is longer and wider than its predecessor, with a longer wheelbase and more rear passenger room. Those changes address a practical weakness shoppers may associate with earlier CX-5s, though they do not establish how the new vehicle compares on every measure of cargo or passenger space. Mazda says the CX-5 nameplate has sold more than 1.6 million units in the U.S. and 4.5 million worldwide since its 2012 debut; those are Mazda’s cumulative figures, not an independent sales audit. What do you get for the price?
Mazda’s January 13, 2026 announcement lists five U.S. trims and their starting MSRPs before destination, taxes, title and fees. It says dealers set actual sale prices. The destination charge requires a date qualification: Mazda’s announcement states $1,595, or $1,640 in Alaska, effective August 11, while the live model page displayed $1,495, or $1,540 in Alaska, when accessed. Confirm the current charge and transaction price with a dealer rather than treating either figure as a timeless out-the-door cost.

Is the CX-5 efficient enough?
Mazda lists a 187-hp, 2.5-liter four-cylinder producing 186 lb-ft, paired with a six-speed automatic. The 2026 U.S. launch powertrain is not a hybrid. Mazda gives it EPA estimates of 24 mpg city, 30 highway and 26 combined, with standard i-Activ AWD. That is a straightforward conventional setup, but shoppers prioritizing fuel savings should compare the CX-5 with hybrid crossovers before deciding.

A September 2026 Tom’s Guide comparison reported 26.2 mpg for its CX-5 Premium Plus over 102.2 miles, versus 47.7 mpg for its RAV4 Limited over 305.1 miles. The writer favored the CX-5’s road feel but judged the RAV4 the better choice for fuel savings. These are results from one author’s test of different trims over different distances—not a controlled, equal-route comparison or a prediction of what every owner will achieve. How strong is the safety case?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) lists the redesigned 2026 CX-5 as a Top Safety Pick+. Its ratings page shows Good results for small-overlap front, updated moderate-overlap front and side crash tests, as well as standard vehicle-to-vehicle and pedestrian crash prevention. Headlight ratings vary by trim or option, so the award does not mean every configuration has identical lighting performance.

IIHS notes that some small-overlap ratings are based on tests of a 2026 CX-5 conducted by Mazda. The award is IIHS’s assessment; that test provenance is relevant when interpreting how the ratings were established. - Consider it if standard all-wheel drive, the reported increase in rear passenger space, safety ratings and responsive road manners carry more weight for you than leading fuel economy.
- Compare alternatives closely if your main goal is reducing fuel costs, or if you need to verify cargo dimensions and trim-specific equipment before purchase.
- Keep expectations measured on durability. The 2026 model is a new generation, and the available evidence does not establish long-term reliability for it. Mazda describes the powertrain as a popular, reliable offering, but that manufacturer statement is not the same as accumulated owner experience with the redesigned model.
For a fair shopping comparison, match actual trim and transaction quotes, EPA economy, standard equipment, passenger and cargo needs, safety details and the model year behind any reliability evidence. The RAV4 comparison is informative, but its differing trims, distances and test conditions do not settle which crossover is best for every buyer.
