Its appeal depends on what you need: Trailhunter and TRD Pro prioritize off-road hardware, while Limited and Platinum lean toward comfort. Toyota also offers the i-FORCE MAX hybrid on specific grades, and claims a maximum towing capacity of 6,000 pounds.
A new generation built on a truck platform
The 2025 model is the sixth-generation 4Runner. Toyota says it uses the TNGA-F platform, shared with the Tacoma, Land Cruiser, Tundra and Sequoia. Its construction includes a boxed steel ladder frame, double-wishbone front suspension and multi-link coil rear suspension. That architecture helps explain the 4Runner’s truck-oriented character, but it does not by itself establish real-world off-road performance or long-term durability.
The nine-grade lineup runs from SR5 to Trailhunter, with distinct comfort, drivetrain and trail-equipment choices rather than one uniform 4Runner specification. Toyota’s published details are useful for comparing equipment, but they are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative test results.
Two powertrains, with hybrid availability tied to grade
Toyota’s 2024 U.S. announcement lists two engine options. The standard 2.4-liter turbo i-FORCE is rated by Toyota at up to 278 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. The i-FORCE MAX hybrid is rated at up to 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. Toyota says i-FORCE MAX is standard on Platinum, TRD Pro and Trailhunter, and available on TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium and Limited.

All i-FORCE MAX grades have four-wheel drive, according to Toyota. Elsewhere in the lineup, drivetrain availability varies; Toyota lists 2WD, part-time 4WD or full-time 4WD depending on grade and configuration. Check the specification for the exact vehicle rather than assuming every 4Runner has the same drivetrain.
Toyota’s 2024 announcement also gives maximum EPA-estimated highway figures of 26 mpg for i-FORCE and 24 mpg for i-FORCE MAX. These are manufacturer-reported estimates, not real-world fuel economy, and the applicable label can vary by configuration. Toyota’s figures do not establish how the redesigned model compares in everyday driving.

Which 2025 4Runner grades suit off-roading?
TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium
These grades offer a more trail-oriented setup than the comfort-focused models. Toyota lists an electronic locking rear differential as standard on TRD Off-Road. i-FORCE MAX is available on both TRD Off-Road and TRD Off-Road Premium, and Toyota’s grade-specific equipment varies. Compare the exact drivetrain, tires, suspension and terrain aids on the vehicle you are considering.
TRD Pro
TRD Pro is a factory-equipped trail choice with TRD-tuned FOX shocks and 33-inch Toyo tires, according to Toyota. It also has a standard electronic locking rear differential and i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. Those named components make the grade’s intended use clear; they are not proof that it will outperform a competitor in every off-road situation.

- 1:64 Scale Diecast Toy Vehicle!
Trailhunter
Trailhunter is the other purpose-built trail-focused grade. Toyota lists an ARB roof rack, Old Man Emu shocks, RIGID Industries fog lamps and 33-inch Toyo tires, along with a standard electronic locking rear differential and i-FORCE MAX. Its factory equipment distinguishes it from a 4Runner that merely has a rugged appearance.
Toyota also lists Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control among the available trail features, but equipment varies by grade. Confirm which systems are included on a specific vehicle rather than treating the names as lineup-wide standard equipment.

Comfort, displays and safety equipment differ by grade
The lineup also includes grades aimed more at everyday comfort. Toyota lists heated and ventilated leather-trimmed front seats on Limited, and a 14-inch display on selected grades. Seat materials, heating and ventilation, audio and convenience features vary across the range, so the best fit depends on the specific equipment you value—not just the grade name.
Toyota says every 2025 4Runner includes Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, its suite of active safety and convenience systems. That is Toyota’s equipment statement, not an independent crash-test rating or assessment of safety performance.

Towing and utility: a 6,000-pound maximum claim
Toyota states a maximum towing capacity of 6,000 pounds for the 2025 4Runner. That is a lineup maximum, not a claim that every grade and configuration carries the same rating. Check the rating for the specific vehicle and account for the trailer, passengers and cargo when assessing a real towing setup. Toyota lists a trailer brake controller and trailer guidance features among the available towing aids.
What Toyota’s launch price does—and does not—tell you
In its December 2024 announcement, Toyota listed a starting MSRP of $40,770 for the SR5, plus $1,450 for delivery processing and handling. Toyota’s campaign page, updated in 2026, repeats the starting figure and says prices are subject to change. These are published manufacturer figures, not a current transaction price; actual pricing depends on the vehicle, location and sale.
Where the 4Runner’s case is strongest
The 2025 4Runner makes the clearest case for shoppers who want a truck-based midsize SUV with selectable 4WD configurations, available hybrid power and grades with substantial factory trail equipment. Its range also includes more comfort-oriented options, so buyers do not have to choose Trailhunter or TRD Pro to get a 4Runner.
The available evidence does not establish long-term reliability, owner satisfaction, real-world fuel economy or an independent ranking against rival SUVs for this redesigned model. Toyota’s heritage and equipment list can help explain its positioning, but they are not substitutes for those results.
