Bugatti said its “Vagues de Lumière” paint schemes took around five weeks to create. The process involved adapting light-inspired shapes to the Chiron’s three-dimensional bodywork, hand-painting contrasting layers, then protecting the finish with several clearcoat layers. The Pur Sport was one of two cars Bugatti revealed with the treatment in April 2022.
Why did the paint take around five weeks?
The challenge was translating a design conceived in two dimensions onto complex, three-dimensional body panels. Bugatti said craftspeople applied the shapes with “millimeter-perfection,” then hand-painted contrasting colors in layers to create a pattern that gives the impression of reflected light. Several clearcoat layers followed to secure the finish. Bugatti’s April 20, 2022 announcement describes the complete process as taking around five weeks.
That is an approximate duration Bugatti gave for these Vagues de Lumière schemes—not a day-by-day schedule, labor-hour estimate, or standard production time for every bespoke paint job. The announcement does not assign a separate duration to each stage.
What made the Pur Sport’s design distinctive?
The Chiron Pur Sport combined exposed Blue Carbon bodywork with encircling Nocturne stripes. French tricolor accents marked the rear wing endplates, and a French Racing Blue number 9 appeared on the horseshoe grille. Inside, the cabin paired Beluga Black and French Racing Blue leather.

Bugatti unveiled the Pur Sport alongside a separate Chiron Super Sport wearing the same light-inspired treatment. The Super Sport’s California Blue base, Arancia Mira lines, and customer-requested grille number 38 belong to that car, not the Pur Sport.

How did the commission fit Bugatti’s personalization program?
Bugatti says it launched Sur Mesure in 2021 to offer a higher level of customer personalization. The manufacturer describes the team as supporting customers from the initial design concept through production and handover. That is Bugatti’s description of the program in its 2022 announcement; it does not establish current commissioning terms or availability.

Was Vagues de Lumière part of a longer design history?
Bugatti connected the treatment to earlier projects that explored painted patterns on its cars. The company dates the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport L’Or Blanc to 2011, and describes the Chiron “Zebra 1 of 1,” introduced in 2019, as a Titanic Blue and Gunpowder Grey design applied over three weeks. Those examples offer context for Bugatti’s interest in distinctive paintwork; they do not show that every comparable project follows the same schedule.
Christophe Piochon, then Bugatti President, characterized the two 2022 cars this way: “The ‘Vague de Lumiére’ paintwork applied to these two examples of our hyper sports cars embodies Bugatti’s fundamental philosophies; craftsmanship, innovation and heritage.” That is the manufacturer’s own description of the work.
