Tesla suspended new orders for the Model S and Model X on its China website on April 11, 2025, as China sharply raised tariffs on U.S. imports. The two models were built in the United States and imported into China, unlike Tesla’s Shanghai-made Model 3 and Model Y. Reuters reported the order suspension amid the tariff escalation, but Tesla did not publicly confirm tariffs as its reason in the cited coverage.
The suspension is a past event, not proof of a current blanket sales halt. Tesla China later listed a time-limited offer for qualifying Model S and Model X inventory orders in 2026; check Tesla’s live pages for availability of a particular car.
What happened to Model S and Model X orders in China?
Reuters reported on April 11, 2025, that Tesla had suspended new Model S and Model X orders on its China website. The change came during a rapid escalation of tariffs between the United States and China. The report establishes the timing and context, but does not establish that Tesla directly stated tariffs were the reason for its decision. Reuters’ April 11 report
Why were the Model S and X especially exposed?
The Model S and Model X at issue were made in the United States and imported into China. That origin exposed them to tariffs on U.S.-origin imports. Tesla’s Model 3 and Model Y, by contrast, were produced at the company’s Shanghai factory, according to the South China Morning Post.

What did the 125% tariff figure mean?
On April 11, 2025, Reuters reported that China announced a 125% tariff on U.S. imports, effective April 12. That was a figure from the escalation at that time—not a current tariff rate. In May 2025, the United States and China agreed to reduce the extraordinary tariff rates, including China’s rate on U.S. goods, according to the Associated Press timeline. The sources cited here do not establish the complete tariff treatment applicable to these cars today.

The U.S. policy changes were a separate part of the dispute: an April 2025 White House executive order describes changes to U.S. reciprocal tariff rates following trading-partner retaliation. It should not be read as documentation of the Chinese tariff applied to U.S.-origin vehicles.
Can you still buy a Model S or Model X in China?
Tesla China’s promotions page listed an offer for qualifying Model S and Model X inventory orders placed between September 7 and October 31, 2026. The offer named dual-motor all-wheel-drive versions and covered specified new, near-new, display and test-drive vehicles. This shows that some inventory orders were being promoted in China during that period; it does not establish that every configuration was available or that custom orders had resumed. Tesla’s general vehicle-order support page explains ordering guidance but does not explain the 2025 pause. Availability can depend on the particular configuration and inventory, so consult Tesla China’s live order information rather than treating the April 2025 report as a current status update.

In 2026, Elon Musk stated an intention to end global Model S and Model X production in the second quarter, according to Axios. That stated global production plan does not, by itself, establish that existing China inventory was unavailable: Tesla China’s promotion page later listed qualifying inventory orders. Production plans and the availability of already-built vehicles are different questions.
