Why Tesla Robotaxis Are Still Working on Nighttime Pet Detection

Musk cited grey kittens on dark pavement as a nighttime perception challenge for Tesla Robotaxi. The statement is an engineering priority, not a measured reliability result.

Elon Musk said on October 3, 2026, that avoiding pets that are hard to see at night was the main issue Tesla was trying to solve for Robotaxi. His example was “grey kittens on grey tarmac in the dark.” That describes a stated engineering priority—not a published measurement showing how reliably Tesla vehicles detect pets.

Why can’t Tesla robotaxis see pets at night?

Musk’s example points to a basic perception challenge: a small, dark animal against a similarly dark road can have little visual contrast, while little light is available for a passive camera to capture. Those conditions can make an animal harder to distinguish from the surrounding scene.

That does not establish that Tesla Robotaxis fail to detect pets in every dark setting. The available report gives no controlled test results, detection ranges, or failure rates for nighttime pet detection. Musk’s post, as reproduced by Electrek, identifies the problem Tesla says it is working on; it does not quantify system-wide reliability.

What Musk said about pets and night driving

On October 3, 2026, Musk wrote: “The main thing we’re trying to solve is making sure that we don’t run over pets when they’re hard to see at night. Literally trying to avoid grey kittens on grey tarmac in the dark.” Electrek reported the statement and described it as the main issue Tesla was working to address for Robotaxi.

How Austin Robotaxi hours changed

Electrek reported that Tesla’s Robotaxi account announced Austin service would be available until 11 p.m., one hour later than the prior 10 p.m. cutoff. The report also said the service had initially accepted requests from 6 a.m. to midnight when it launched in Austin in June 2025. These are dated operating schedules reported for Austin, not a permanent policy or a guarantee about current hours. See Electrek’s October 3, 2026 report for the announcement and context.

The schedule change and Musk’s explanation appeared together in the reporting, but the available information does not establish that extending service to 11 p.m. followed a particular technical milestone or that the change reflects a verified improvement in pet detection.

What cameras, lidar and radar contribute

The sensing approaches described in the reporting measure the world in different ways. That can help explain why low light is a challenge, but it does not establish that any one sensor—or a combination—will detect every animal or prevent a collision.

Sensor What it measures Relevant limitation in the reported context
Camera Available reflected light and visual contrast in the scene. A dark, low-contrast animal can be difficult to distinguish in limited illumination.
Lidar Returned laser pulses, used to estimate distance and three-dimensional shape. The reporting provides no controlled results showing how reliably lidar detects small animals or prevents the specific nighttime scenario.
Radar Radio waves. The reporting gives no detection ranges or comparative results for pets or small objects.

Electrek also described a Waymo demonstration in which a camera view of a dark street was poor while the lidar view was clearer. That is an example from a demonstration, not a standardized comparison of systems or proof that lidar would resolve Tesla’s stated challenge. The report does not establish how sensor fusion or the complete vehicle system performs in the specific kitten-on-dark-road scenario.

What is known—and not known—about safety

A separate report said an Austin Robotaxi struck a dog in September 2025 and attributed the information to Tesla’s report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The underlying filing and full circumstances are not available in the reporting cited here, so that account does not establish the cause, the vehicle’s sensor configuration, or whether it is connected to Musk’s October 2026 statement. The report is available at IT之家.

No numerical statistic in the cited reporting measures Tesla Robotaxi’s nighttime pet-detection reliability or compares its safety with another system. The Austin service hours are schedule information, and the reported dog collision is an individual incident—not a detection-performance rate.
