Some Tesla owners have used anti-Elon bumper stickers to distinguish their cars from Elon Musk’s public image—but the striking sales figures come from one seller, not a count of Tesla drivers nationwide. Reporting in 2024 and 2025 described a sharp spike in Hawaii-based maker Matthew Hiller’s sales, while interviews showed that owners’ feelings about their cars and Musk were far from uniform.
Why would a Tesla owner put an anti-Elon sticker on the car?
For some owners, the sticker offers a way to keep the vehicle while signaling that buying or driving a Tesla does not mean endorsing Musk. Hiller told Futurism in November 2024 that he imagined owners who were “so embarrassed to be repping him on the streets” and wanted to “completely disavow this guy.” That was his explanation for the product’s appeal, not a survey finding about Tesla owners as a group.
An Etsy reviewer quoted by SFGATE described buying a sticker for a father whose Tesla had become a source of embarrassment. These individual accounts suggest one practical motive: the owner can change the message associated with the car without replacing it. The reporting does not establish how many buyers were Tesla owners, however; some people driving other vehicles could also buy stickers intended for Teslas.
What sparked the anti-Elon sticker business?
From an idea to a product
Hiller, an aquarium employee in the Waikiki/Honolulu area, had been making stickers before he created an anti-Elon design. Futurism reported that he considered buying a Tesla in 2023, then decided against it and saw an opportunity to make a tongue-in-cheek sticker for owners seeking distance from Musk’s public persona. SFGATE reported that he added the original “I bought this before we knew Elon was crazy” design to Etsy in February 2023.

Other reported designs included “Anti Elon Tesla Club” and “F Elon.” The San Francisco Chronicle later noted “Elon ate my cat” and “Elon killed my resale value.” Their tone ranges from mock club membership to outright ridicule; the available reporting does not establish that one design outsold another.
Election-period attention
Hiller told SFGATE that the day after the November 5, 2024 U.S. election was his shop’s biggest sales day to that point. He also told the outlet that California was his largest shipping state and San Francisco his leading city within it. Those observations connect the sales story to a period of heightened attention around Musk and politics, but they do not show that politics was the sole reason customers bought the stickers.

How large were the reported sales?
The numbers are notable, but they come from different dates and methods. They should not be read as a continuous, independently verified tally.
| Report | Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Futurism, Nov. 20, 2024 | More than 10,000 sold since the prior year; an average of 180 shipments per day | Hiller’s “ballpark” estimates as reported by Futurism. |
| SFGATE, Nov. 26, 2024 | 15,000 anti-Musk stickers sold | Hiller’s figure as reported by SFGATE. |
| SFGATE, Nov. 26, 2024 | More than 2,250 purchases in the month before Nov. 26 | The count then displayed on Hiller’s Amazon storefront, as described by SFGATE; it is a dated storefront figure, not a current count. |
| San Francisco Chronicle, Mar. 7, 2025, updated Mar. 8 | Up to 700 stickers per day | A daily-sales figure attributed to Hiller by the Chronicle. |
Because these figures cover different time spans and include seller estimates as well as a storefront display, they cannot be combined into a precise growth rate or treated as audited market totals. The articles document one maker’s reported business, not the overall size of the anti-Elon sticker market.

Do Tesla owners generally feel embarrassed?
The interviews reported by the San Francisco Chronicle in March 2025 showed mixed reactions. Some owners described embarrassment or reluctance to buy another Tesla; others stood by the cars and their purchase decisions. John Stringer, co-founder and president of Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley, defended owners against criticism, telling the Chronicle: “The people who are attacking Tesla owners, they’re just not reasonable people.”
That contrast matters: visible stickers and vivid interviews can show that some owners want to separate their car from Musk, but they cannot establish how common that feeling is. The cited coverage offers no representative survey of Tesla owners’ views, and sticker buyers are not necessarily Tesla owners.

What the sales story does—and does not—show
- It shows a seller-specific spike: Hiller’s sales accounts and reported storefront activity drew attention in 2024 and 2025.
- It illustrates one response to a public image problem: some owners used humor or criticism to distinguish themselves from Musk while continuing to drive the car.
- It does not measure all owners: no owner-wide embarrassment rate or comprehensive market total is established by these reports.
- It does not establish current availability or sales: the Amazon purchases cited by SFGATE were displayed in November 2024, not verified as a present-day listing or count.
