Some investors said Tesla’s October 10, 2024, “We, Robot” event disappointed because it showed striking vehicle concepts without explaining clearly how they would become a working, regulated robotaxi service. The criticism centered on missing details about the ride-hailing app, the vehicle network and the path to commercial operations—not simply on the futuristic design.
What Tesla showed at “We, Robot”
Tesla held the presentation at Warner Bros. studio near Los Angeles on October 10, 2024. CEO Elon Musk presented the two-seat Cybercab concept, which he said had no steering wheel or pedals, and a larger Robovan. Reuters reported that the Robovan was presented as capable of carrying 20 people. Optimus robots also appeared at the event.
The presentation framed the vehicles as part of a future autonomous ride-hailing network. Earlier reporting described Tesla’s proposed model as a fleet of self-driving taxis that passengers would hail through an app. Musk announced a Cybercab production target of 2026 and a price target below $30,000; those were company targets, not evidence that production or sales had begun. He also described an urban vision of “turning parking lots into parks.” (Reuters, republished by Investing.com; Reuters)
Why some investors wanted more than a concept reveal
The app and network were central to the business case
A fleet of autonomous taxis needs more than vehicles: passengers must be able to request rides, and the service needs an operating network. Reuters reported that Tasha Keeney, director of investment analysis at ARK Investment Management, had hoped for more specifics about the app. Axios likewise reported that investors expected an explanation of the software network connecting the vehicles, and said that detail was missing from the announcement.

That gap mattered because a vehicle unveiling could communicate Tesla’s vision without showing how a customer would use the service or how the proposed fleet would operate. The reported criticism was about the distance between a concept and a functioning business, not a unanimous rejection of autonomous vehicles. (Reuters, republished by Investing.com; Axios)
Targets did not establish a route to launch
The announced 2026 production timing and sub-$30,000 price gave the audience two headline targets, but the event did not establish that either would be met or explain a detailed path from demonstration to commercial service. The Associated Press reported that the Cybercab would not be available before at least 2026. That contemporaneous estimate and Musk’s target were forward-looking statements, not proof of subsequent production, regulatory approval or service availability. The design raised practical and regulatory questions
A Cybercab without a steering wheel or pedals made the autonomy question especially concrete: how would such a vehicle be deployed on public roads, and under what rules? Axios noted that a vehicle without those controls would need an exemption from federal motor vehicle safety standards for deployment on U.S. roads. That was a regulatory issue identified in contemporaneous reporting, not a definitive ruling on the future vehicle’s legal status.
AP quoted University of South Carolina law professor Bryant Walker Smith, who studies automated vehicles: “Indeed, Tesla’s whole event had a 2014 vibe, except that in 2014 there were no automated vehicles actually deployed on public roads.” His point underscored the difference between presenting an autonomy vision and demonstrating a practical service operating in the real world. The market reaction was negative, but not unanimous
Tesla shares opened down more than 9% on Friday, October 11, 2024, according to Axios. That is an immediate, dated market reaction; by itself, it does not show that all investors were disappointed or that the event alone caused the entire move. Axios also reported that Bank of America analysts John Murphy and John Babcock reiterated Buy ratings, illustrating that the response was mixed.
Investor Ross Gerber offered a sharper critique, telling Axios: “Tesla is down because they are stuck selling the same model Y for many years to come. None of these products are coming anytime soon.” His comment reflected one investor’s view of the company’s product timeline, rather than a consensus assessment. (Axios)

What the “disappointment” label meant
For the investors and analysts cited in the October 2024 coverage, the event’s weakness was the gap between spectacle and execution detail. Tesla presented concepts and an ambitious autonomous-transport vision, but the reporting highlighted unanswered questions about the app, the network, commercialization and the regulatory path for a vehicle with no conventional driving controls. The event’s announced schedule and price were targets, not verified outcomes.
The sources cited here document the event and its immediate reception on October 10–11, 2024; they do not establish Cybercab’s production or service status as of October 2026.
