Some GM V8-swapped Toyota Land Cruisers reach six figures because the engine is only one part of a much larger restoration or reengineering project. Buyers may be paying for body and chassis work, a carefully integrated drivetrain, upgraded suspension and brakes, a restored interior, equipment, and the labor and records behind the finished truck. The available examples show that these prices are real for certain builds—not that every V8 conversion is worth six figures or that the engine alone creates a premium.
What the six-figure prices actually represent
Three figures illustrate why price categories matter. ICON lists its built-to-order FJ at US$125,000 to US$195,000, depending on specifications. That is the builder’s stated range for its bespoke product, not a used-market average.
A specific ICON-built 1995 FZJ80 sold for US$124,500 at auction on July 17, 2026. Its listing reported that the current owner’s 17-page 2014 ICON/TLC build invoice showed costs exceeding US$132,000. That reported historical build cost is not the truck’s sale price, and it does not establish how much of the original expense was recovered.
Separately, Land Cruiser Restorations listed a turnkey 1989 FJ62 for US$98,000 when accessed on October 5, 2026. That is an asking price, not a completed transaction; listing availability and price can change.

These are different kinds of evidence—a builder’s new-build range, one completed auction sale, reported build expenditure, and a seller’s asking price. None can stand in for a typical market price, an average, or proof of a universal V8-swap premium.
What can be behind the price
The powertrain is part of a larger engineering job
ICON’s published FJ specification names a GM 6.2-liter L92 Gen 4 small-block V8, rated by the manufacturer at 430 hp at 5,300 rpm and 450 lb-ft at 4,200 rpm. ICON also specifies a purpose-built radiator and electric fan, custom stainless exhaust, purpose-built wiring, and a sealed fuse panel. Those details show the supporting systems one builder includes; they should not be assumed for every Land Cruiser conversion. ICON FJ specifications

The auctioned FZJ80 provides a concrete example of drivetrain integration: its 6.2-liter GM E-Rod LS3 was paired with a 4L65E automatic, a dual-range transfer case, a locking center differential, and custom-fabricated driveshafts. An engine swap that is meant to work as a vehicle involves more than fitting an engine into the bay.
Restoration and chassis work add scope
The FZJ80 listing also described body-off work and paint, frame and axle treatment, replacement exterior parts, suspension and brake upgrades, bumpers, a winch, interior work, and other accessories. The truck came with build invoices and a clean Carfax report, according to the listing. These features help explain the scope of that particular build, but different buyers may assign different value to the work and equipment.

ICON describes its FJ as using a hand-built 5/32-inch 5052 H32 aluminum body. Its published material also discusses a custom chassis, suspension, Dana/Dynatrac axles, and drivetrain choices. These are features of ICON’s own product, not a checklist shared by all V8-swapped Toyotas. ICON4x4 press
A finished truck may offer convenience as well as components
The seller’s FJ62 listing presents a Chevrolet 5.3-liter Vortec V8, 6L80E six-speed automatic, Old Man Emu suspension, 40-gallon tank, refreshed interior, and delivery as part of a turnkey offering. A buyer may value receiving a completed vehicle rather than sourcing parts and coordinating a restoration. Builder identity and records can help establish what was done
A specialist’s documented build can make the work easier to evaluate. ICON founder Jonathan Ward describes the company’s aim this way: “ICON builds 4X4 vehicles that pay homage to the originals but utilize modern materials, technologies and manufacturing practices to create vehicles that drive as you would expect of a modern car, yet still have that old school cool that only a classic car can provide.” That is the builder’s stated philosophy, not an independent assessment of every vehicle it builds. The FZJ80 auction listing disclosed invoices, mileage, condition reports, and equipment. Such documentation can help a prospective buyer understand a truck’s history and specification; it does not replace checking the records and inspecting the individual vehicle.

How to compare two Land Cruisers fairly
Start with the vehicle’s series and the nature of the project. An FJ40, FJ62, and FZJ80 are not interchangeable, and a restored original, an engine conversion, and a purpose-built replacement-style vehicle can represent very different work.
- Build identity and scope: Ask who performed the work, what was restored or replaced, and whether invoices, parts lists, and engine and transmission provenance are available.
- Condition and history: Check body and frame condition, rust treatment, mechanical condition, mileage, and documented damage history. Verify the actual truck rather than relying only on listing language.
- Drivetrain integration: Identify the engine, transmission, transfer case, differential configuration, driveshafts, cooling, exhaust, and electrical controls. Look for records that show how the systems were installed and maintained.
- Chassis and intended use: Compare suspension, axles, brakes, tires, bumpers, and winch against how you plan to drive the vehicle—on road, off road, or both.
- Usability and compliance: Consider cabin condition and comfort equipment, then verify title, registration, and emissions requirements for your jurisdiction. Requirements vary by location; the cited listings do not establish rules everywhere.
- Price basis: Keep a builder’s new-build price, a seller’s asking price, a completed sale, and reported historical build cost separate. They answer different questions.
No dollar figure in these examples isolates the value added by the engine, builder, restoration, or accessories. The cited prices support the narrower point: some heavily restored or bespoke GM V8 Land Cruisers are offered or sold at six-figure levels, but the engine alone does not explain or guarantee that price.
