If you accidentally put diesel in a gasoline car, don’t start the engine or turn on the ignition. If you’ve already started or driven it, stop somewhere safe, switch it off, and don’t restart it. There is no established “small amount is safe” threshold for this fuel mix; contact the vehicle maker, dealer, or a qualified wrong-fuel service for advice specific to your car.
If you haven’t started the car
Leave the engine off and avoid turning on the ignition. The AA warns that either action can pump the incorrect fuel toward the engine. Call the vehicle maker or dealer, or a qualified wrong-fuel roadside service, and explain what happened before moving the car.
Give the service provider the vehicle’s make, model and year; an estimate of how much diesel went in; how much gasoline was already in the tank; and whether you turned the ignition on. The correct response depends on those details. Ford also advises drivers not to attempt to start an engine after filling with the wrong fuel: Ford’s incorrect-fuel guidance.
If you’ve started or driven the car
Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off the engine, and arrange professional help. Don’t restart the car to test whether it will run. Starting circulates the contaminated fuel and may increase the risk of damage.

Excessive smoke, misfiring and difficulty starting are possible signs of diesel in a gasoline car, according to the AA. Toyota’s general incorrect-fuel guidance also identifies starting problems, abnormal noise or vibration, reduced power and possible fuel-system component damage. These symptoms are possibilities, not proof of a particular fault; a technician needs to assess the vehicle.
Can you dilute a little diesel with gasoline?
Don’t assume that topping up with gasoline makes the car safe to drive. The sources do not establish a universal safe amount of diesel in a gasoline car, and the right remedy depends on the vehicle, the amount added, the fuel already in the tank, and whether the ignition or engine has been used. Toyota advises prompt dealer consultation about fuel replacement after incorrect refuelling: Toyota’s incorrect-fuelling guidance.

- LAB TESTING NOT INCLUDED — This purchase is the life-safety FOI diesel fuel sample collection and shipping kit. It provides the materials and documentation needed to properly collect in continuity and submit a diesel fuel sample to a laboratory. Laboratory analysis and testing fees are purchased separately.
- FIRST STEP IN THE CONTINUITY WORKFLOW — The standby sample kit establishes the prepared starting point for an FOI fuel-quality event. Having the correct sampling materials, documentation, and shipping pathway, stand-by ready, allows the continuity workflow and chain of custody to begin at the time the sample is taken rather than after materials must be sourced.
- ESTABLISHES DOCUMENTED SAMPLE CUSTODY — The included Sample Information Form (SIF), container, secondary containment, absorbent materials, isolation packaging, and instructions support a documented chain of custody, tracking the sample from the source thru final record.
- WHAT'S INCLUDED — A engineered life-safety diesel-compatible sample container, secondary containment, absorbent material, isolation packaging, shipping carton, Sample Information Form, and collection/shipping instructions for shipping a diesel sample safely.
- LABORATORY ANALYSIS AVAILABLE SEPARATELY — After collection, the sample may be submitted to FOI Laboratories for the appropriate ASTM D975 / NFPA 110 fuel-quality testing package. Laboratory testing is not included with the purchase of this kit.
A handbook’s example of less than 10% contamination concerns the opposite situation—gasoline in a diesel car—and does not establish a safe threshold for diesel in a gasoline car: Cumbria County Council handbook.

Ask whether the provider handles wrong-fuel incidents and can assist your vehicle at its location. Confirm coverage, vehicle compatibility, response arrangements and cost before agreeing to service. If the car has been started or driven, tell the provider; don’t drive it to a repair shop unless a qualified professional specifically advises you to do so.

What not to do
- Don’t start the engine or switch on the ignition if you haven’t already.
- Don’t keep driving, restart the car, or use extra gasoline as a substitute for professional advice.
- Don’t try a generic siphon, transfer pump or fuel additive as a remedy; the manufacturer and roadside guidance cited here do not establish those as safe fixes.
- Don’t apply advice for gasoline in a diesel car to diesel in a gasoline car; the two situations are not interchangeable.
