The IRS’s 2024 list included the Model 3 Long Range All-Wheel Drive and Performance, each with a listed $7,500 credit and a $55,000 MSRP limit. Other configurations were not listed. The change that caused concern was a battery-sourcing rule effective for vehicles placed in service after December 31, 2023—but eligibility depended on the exact vehicle, delivery date, and buyer, not just the Model 3 name.
There is an important update for anyone researching the rules now: the IRS says the New Clean Vehicle Credit is unavailable for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025. The 2024 rules below explain how a Model 3 could have qualified then; they do not make the credit available for a later purchase.
What changed for 2024?
Beginning with vehicles placed in service after December 31, 2023, a battery containing any component manufactured or assembled by a foreign entity of concern disqualified the vehicle from any portion of the New Clean Vehicle Credit. The IRS stated that such a vehicle was not eligible even for the partial $3,750 credit tied to the critical-mineral requirement. IRS Topic A FAQ
This restriction helps explain why 2024 Model 3 eligibility became a trim- and vehicle-specific question. It does not establish that every Model 3 had a disqualifying component: the IRS sources reviewed do not identify battery sourcing for every trim or VIN. A broad claim that all Model 3s were ineligible—or that a particular supplier or country explains every case—goes beyond what those sources show.

Which 2024 Model 3s were on the IRS list?
The IRS’s 2024 qualifying-vehicle list named these Model 3 versions:

These are the entries and amounts shown on the IRS 2024 qualifying vehicle list. The list does not include every Model 3 configuration. A listed model and trim still had to meet the applicable vehicle requirements, and the buyer had to satisfy the taxpayer rules, including the relevant income requirements. The $55,000 limit is an MSRP ceiling, not a promise that every car priced below it qualified.

Why the model name alone cannot answer eligibility
For the historical 2024 rules, the relevant checks were tied to the specific purchase and vehicle:
- Trim and model year: Confirm the exact configuration against the IRS list; “Tesla Model 3” by itself is not specific enough.
- Placed-in-service date: The IRS says the applicable requirements generally follow the date the vehicle is placed in service, meaning when the buyer takes delivery. Timing can therefore matter even when the order or purchase process began earlier. IRS Topic C FAQ
- VIN-level eligibility: The individual vehicle must be checked; a trim-level listing is not final confirmation for a particular VIN.
- Price and buyer eligibility: The applicable MSRP ceiling and the buyer’s eligibility requirements also apply.
- Battery sourcing: For vehicles placed in service after December 31, 2023, a battery component made or assembled by a foreign entity of concern was disqualifying under the IRS rule.
How to verify a vehicle’s eligibility
- Check the VIN in IRS Energy Credits Online. The IRS recommends this VIN-based check for final eligibility confirmation. IRS Topic B FAQ
- Ask the seller for the seller report. Keep the report with the vehicle and tax records.
- Confirm the dealer submitted the report successfully. Do not treat an order confirmation, a general Model 3 eligibility claim, or the trim name alone as proof that the IRS received the required information.
- Apply the rules for the delivery date and your tax situation. The IRS VIN check addresses vehicle eligibility; it does not replace checking the buyer’s separate requirements.
Can you claim the credit for a Model 3 bought now?
No federal New Clean Vehicle Credit is available for a vehicle acquired after September 30, 2025, according to the IRS’s current clean-vehicle credit page, reviewed October 8, 2026. That current cutoff is separate from the historical 2024 eligibility rules. IRS: Clean vehicle tax credits
