Porsche says 911 buyers still want a manual, and it continues to offer one for drivers who prefer working a clutch and shift lever themselves. In the current 2027 U.S. lineup, that choice is concentrated in the rear-wheel-drive Carrera T and Carrera S with MT Package—not every 911.
Why does Porsche keep the 911 manual?
The clearest answer is the one Porsche gives: customer demand. In its August 13, 2026 announcement of the Carrera S manual’s return to North America, Porsche said the move was “Responding to overwhelming customer demand.” That is the manufacturer’s stated rationale, not a published sales analysis: the announcement did not give manual-order totals, a buyer survey, or the share of 911 customers who choose a stick shift. The company’s claim establishes that it sees enough interest to keep the option in its range, but it does not quantify how large that audience is. Porsche’s 2026 announcement also said North America then had seven 911 variants with conventional manual transmissions. That is a model count for that announcement, not a measure of sales or a permanent count for every market.

Porsche also describes the manual as a distinct way to drive, not simply an alternative set of ratios. Timo Resch, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, said: “While some brands are abandoning the manual, we are proud to continue offering three pedals in a range of products that speaks to different use cases. Managing a clutch and shift lever isn’t for everyone, but for the drivers who want it there really is no substitute.” The statement captures the company’s positioning: the manual suits people who value the extra decisions and physical involvement, while the automatic transmission remains available to drivers with other priorities.

Porsche’s public explanation is about choice and the appeal of driver participation, not a claim that one transmission is universally superior. Nor do the reviewed announcements establish that Porsche retains manuals solely for nostalgia, brand image, emissions rules, or resale value.

Which 911s have a manual in the current U.S. lineup?
Porsche’s U.S. model listing for the 2027 range shows two manual choices: the rear-wheel-drive Carrera T and the rear-wheel-drive Carrera S with MT Package. The Carrera GTS is listed as automatic. Those are U.S.-specific current listings; availability and model naming can differ elsewhere, so buyers in other countries should check their local Porsche range rather than assume the same menu applies. Porsche’s U.S. 911 configurator is the relevant place to confirm the current listing.

The table combines a live 2027 U.S. listing with Porsche’s descriptions of specific launches. The Carrera T details about its role come from the 2025 announcement; they should not be treated as a complete specification sheet for the 2027 car. Similarly, the 2026 Carrera S announcement says the MT Package is exclusive to North America and is available on both Coupe and Cabriolet forms. It describes that package as six-speed, but the current configurator is the source for the current model-year listing.
Configurator prices are not a reliable proxy for what a buyer will pay out the door. Porsche’s displayed U.S. MSRP excludes options, taxes, title, registration, delivery/processing/handling fees, dealer charges, and potential tariffs. Because those amounts vary, the displayed figure should not be presented as a transaction price or a complete ownership cost.

What is the Carrera T’s role in Porsche’s manual strategy?
The Carrera T is the clearest expression of the manual-first idea in Porsche’s own model descriptions. In its October 29, 2024 announcement for the 2025 Carrera T Coupe and Cabriolet, Porsche said the six-speed manual was the model’s only transmission. It paired that choice with an enthusiast-oriented brief, a sporty chassis, and an emphasis on low weight. In other words, Porsche did not present the manual as a concession added to a model otherwise defined around an automatic; it made the transmission part of the T’s identity.
The 2025 announcement reported a 3.0-liter twin-turbo boxer engine rated at 388 hp and 331 lb-ft. Porsche gave the 2025 Coupe a 0–60 mph time of 4.3 seconds and the Cabriolet 4.5 seconds. These are figures Porsche reported for the 2025 announcement, not verified 2027 specifications, and they do not establish how the current model performs in every configuration or condition. The figures are useful context for what Porsche paired with the manual in that model-year launch, but a buyer comparing current cars should use the current model-year specifications. Porsche’s 2025 Carrera T announcement provides the dated figures and description.
The Carrera S MT Package serves a different place in the range. Porsche’s August 2026 release said the 992.2-generation Carrera S initially launched with an eight-speed PDK only, then announced the six-speed manual package for North America. Porsche described the package as keeping an analog emphasis while including standard equipment and limiting added weight. The release positions it as a manual alternative within the S model rather than as a separate lightweight T-style concept. That gives a prospective buyer two distinct manual routes: a T described around enthusiast focus and weight-conscious setup, or an S whose manual arrives as a package on a more highly equipped variant.

Porsche did not publish a detailed comparative weight table or a full equipment-by-equipment comparison in the material cited here. It is therefore safer to describe the two models by their stated roles than to assume exact equipment, weight, or performance differences beyond the figures Porsche explicitly reported for the 2025 T.

The GTS is the obvious point of comparison because Porsche has made it a hybrid 911. Porsche’s May 28, 2024 announcement for the 2025 911 range described the Carrera GTS as the first road-legal 911 with a performance-focused hybrid powertrain. The system pairs a 3.6-liter boxer engine and an electric turbocharger with an electric motor integrated into the PDK transmission. Porsche reported 532 hp of combined system output for that 2025 announcement. The current U.S. GTS page also describes the integrated motor, and the U.S. model listing identifies the GTS as automatic. Porsche’s 2025-model T-Hybrid announcement and the current U.S. Carrera GTS page describe the configuration.
This is a packaging distinction, not proof that Porsche has declared a manual hybrid technically impossible. The sources establish that Porsche integrated an electric motor into the GTS’s PDK and currently lists the car as automatic. They do not say that the hybrid architecture is the sole reason the GTS is not offered with a manual, that no manual hybrid could be engineered, or that Porsche has ruled out such a version permanently. The accurate explanation is narrower: the GTS’s current hybrid configuration is built around PDK, while the current U.S. manual options are the T and S MT Package.

The hybrid and manual approaches also serve different priorities in Porsche’s lineup. The Carrera T and S MT Package offer the driver direct involvement in gear changes; the GTS combines its performance-focused hybrid system with an automatic transmission. That is a product-choice comparison, not a verdict about which car is more enjoyable, faster in every situation, or right for every owner. The cited Porsche announcements do not provide a controlled comparison between these variants.

Porsche’s reference to seven conventional-manual 911 variants in North America offers useful context, but it is easy to misread. It means the company counted seven variants at the time of its August 2026 Carrera S announcement. Porsche identified the Carrera T Coupe and Cabriolet toward the entry end of the manual range and manual GT3-family options toward its enthusiast-performance end. It does not mean that seven manual models are offered in every country, that each has equal availability, or that seven versions will remain in the range throughout the model year.

More importantly, a variant count does not show how many customers buy manuals. Porsche’s release uses customer demand to explain the Carrera S return but supplies no percentage, order volume, or comparison with PDK take-up. A reader can conclude that Porsche considers the interest sufficient to justify offering manuals in several forms; the public information cited here does not reveal the financial case or the demand level behind that decision.

How should a buyer choose between the manual and automatic 911s?
Start with the transmission experience you want, then narrow the choice by model and market. If actively operating a clutch and shift lever is central to the appeal, the current U.S. T and S MT Package are the listed manual routes. If the GTS’s T-Hybrid configuration is the priority, its current U.S. listing pairs that system with an automatic PDK. A shopper outside the United States should verify local availability, since Porsche explicitly describes the S MT Package as North America-exclusive.
- Choose by involvement: The manual is intended for drivers who want to manage clutch engagement and gear selection. Porsche says that experience has no substitute for those who value it.
- Choose by model purpose: Porsche describes the T as enthusiast-focused, sporty-chassis, and weight-conscious. The S MT Package returns a six-speed option to the Carrera S, whose initial 992.2 configuration had been PDK-only.
- Choose by powertrain: The current GTS is the hybrid automatic option in the U.S. lineup, with its electric motor integrated into PDK.
- Verify the model year and region: The listed lineup is 2027 U.S.-specific, while the 388-hp Carrera T and 532-hp GTS figures above come from Porsche’s 2025-model announcements.
- Confirm the order details: Use the local configurator or a Porsche Centre for current equipment, availability, and pricing; a displayed MSRP is not an out-the-door quote.
The practical reason Porsche still offers the manual is therefore neither that every 911 should have one nor that it is the only authentic way to drive the car. Porsche says customers continue to ask for it and maintains it as a distinct option for a particular kind of driver. In the 2027 U.S. range, that choice lives in the Carrera T and Carrera S MT Package, while the hybrid GTS follows a different transmission and performance path.
