Pickup trucks cost so much because several forces stacked up: buyers increasingly choose expensive full-size trucks and trims, pandemic-era shortages pushed prices up, new models can include more equipment than older ones, and tariffs and fees have added newer costs. The headline prices are real, but they do not mean every truck buyer pays the same amount—or that tariffs alone caused the long rise.
How expensive are pickup trucks now?
In the U.S. market, the four leading full-size pickups each averaged more than $60,000 in transaction price in May 2024, according to Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive. The Ford F-Series averaged $67,937, and the GMC Sierra averaged more than $70,000. Those are averages of what buyers paid, not starting prices or a quote for a particular truck.
For the full-size pickup segment as a whole, Kelley Blue Book reported a December 2024 average transaction price of $64,261 across 223,293 vehicles. That was the segment’s highest sales volume point of that year. The broader U.S. new-vehicle market had an average transaction price of $50,080 in September 2025, but that figure includes all vehicle types and should not be treated as a pickup price.
What the leading full-size truck averages show
| Pickup | May 2024 U.S. average transaction price |
|---|---|
| Ford F-Series | $67,937, reported by Kelley Blue Book/Cox Automotive |
| GMC Sierra | Above $70,000; exact average not stated in the May 2024 report |
| Chevrolet Silverado | Above $60,000; exact average not stated in the May 2024 report |
| Ram Pickup | Above $60,000; exact average not stated in the May 2024 report |
The figures describe four popular full-size nameplates, not every pickup. Cab, bed, engine, drivetrain, trim, options, location, incentives, and negotiation can all change the price of an individual truck.

Why does the average truck price look so high?
Popular full-size trucks pull up the market mix
Four full-size pickups ranked among the ten best-selling U.S. vehicles in May 2024. Transaction-price averages are volume-weighted, so popular, high-priced models have a large influence on the market average. If buyers purchase more full-size trucks or select more expensive versions, the average can rise even without an equal increase for every comparable truck.
Cox Automotive executive analyst Erin Keating described the U.S. market’s “fully loaded, full-size pickup trucks” as more luxurious than many luxury vehicles. The point is not that every pickup is lavishly equipped; it is that a segment with many costly, popular versions can make the market-wide number feel especially steep. The available figures do not establish what share of the long-term price increase came from buyers choosing higher trims.
Average transaction price is not the sticker price
MSRP is the manufacturer’s suggested asking price. Transaction price is the average amount buyers actually paid, which can reflect discounts, incentives, and negotiation. Neither figure tells you what a specific truck will cost after its configuration, destination charge, taxes, dealer add-ons, and financing are considered.

Did the pandemic make truck prices rise?
Supply shortages and manufacturing disruption during and after the pandemic contributed to the run-up. When fewer vehicles were available, buyers had less choice and dealers had less reason to discount. But that is not the whole explanation for today’s price level.
Cox Automotive said U.S. new-vehicle inventory had recovered close to pre-pandemic levels during 2024. In December 2024, new-vehicle transaction prices were still just over 1% higher than a year earlier and remained above 2019 levels. That pattern points to slower price growth after the acute disruption, not a return to the old nominal price level. Cox also reported that industry inventory rose 51% year over year in May 2024; higher inventory helped keep average prices in check and pushed incentives higher.
Are newer trucks really comparable to older ones?
Not always. A current model may differ from an older one in safety equipment, fuel economy, carrying capacity, comfort, convenience, and other features. A raw comparison between two model years’ sticker prices can therefore mix price inflation with a change in what the vehicle includes.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that its new-truck category covers pickup trucks, vans, and specialty vehicles, and that it quality-adjusts its price index for attributes such as safety, fuel economy, carrying capacity, comfort, and convenience. Its index is a measure of price change, not an average of what pickup buyers paid. For a practical like-for-like comparison, hold the model, model year, cab, bed, drivetrain, engine, trim, and equipment as constant as possible, and compare the same type of price measure.

These are newer cost pressures, not a complete explanation for the multi-year increase. In a March 30, 2026 analysis, Kelley Blue Book reported industry estimates of $1,600–$2,000 in tariff-related costs per U.S.-assembled vehicle and $5,000–$8,900 per imported vehicle. These estimates are not truck-specific universal surcharges or a guarantee that the buyer’s price rises by the same amount. U.S. assembly does not eliminate exposure to imported inputs, including steel and aluminum.

That is a model-year- and manufacturer-specific charge, not a universal pickup fee. The same analysis noted that discounts, negotiation, and competitive pressure absorbed some list-price growth, so the sticker-price change and the amount buyers paid did not necessarily match.

What should you compare when shopping?
To determine whether one truck is actually more affordable than another, compare equivalent configurations and the final deal rather than headline numbers.
- Match model year, cab and bed configuration, drivetrain, engine, trim, and major equipment.
- Separate MSRP from the dealer’s transaction price, and account for incentives that apply to your location and purchase.
- Include destination charges, taxes, dealer add-ons, and other fees in the out-the-door price.
- Compare the total amount financed and the financing terms, not just the monthly payment.
These comparisons matter because an average for a popular full-size pickup cannot tell you what a particular trim or deal should cost. The cited market figures establish the segment’s high prices, but they do not rank current models by affordability.
