Max Verstappen’s frustration after the 2026 Australian Grand Prix was aimed at how the new car felt and behaved—not, on the available reporting, at a personal dispute with Red Bull. He described it as “super frustrating to drive,” while also thanking his team for its work. The exchanges were reported by PlanetF1 from radio that was not televised, rather than published as an official, complete transcript.
What happened in Melbourne
The Australian Grand Prix was held at Albert Park on 8 March 2026, opening Formula One’s new era. Verstappen crashed at Turn 1 on his first lap in Saturday qualifying, started Sunday’s race from 20th and finished sixth, 54.617 seconds behind winner George Russell, according to PlanetF1’s report. The Formula 1 race-day roundup offers broader team reactions to the opening event and the new regulations.
What Verstappen said over team radio
PlanetF1 reports several operational complaints during the race, not one isolated outburst. Verstappen said his battery was “almost empty” at the start, complained that the tyres were wearing quickly, asked for guidance on the best approach to Turn 5, and said switch adjustments and boost or deployment settings were not working as expected.
On the cooldown lap, PlanetF1 attributes this remark to Verstappen: “It’s just super frustrating to drive, but thank you.” The thanks is part of the reported quote: the criticism of the car’s driving experience did not erase his acknowledgement of the team’s effort.

How Lambiase responded—and what the exchange does not show
Race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase replied, as quoted by PlanetF1: “Frustrating? There’s drivers up front, Max, elated with this whole thing.” That answer points to differing reactions to the new cars; it does not establish a personal rift between Verstappen and Red Bull.
PlanetF1 also reports Verstappen saying after the race, “I do love racing and I want it to be better than this. Let’s see what we can do.” That was a media comment, not a team-radio message.

Two kinds of frustration: race problems and the 2026 cars
The reported complaints span immediate race-management issues—battery charge, tyre wear, guidance and power deployment—and a broader objection to the way the cars felt to drive. The distinction matters: a difficult race with settings or tyre problems is not, by itself, evidence of a dispute with the team, while Verstappen’s “super frustrating” description addresses his driving experience more generally.
