1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsManual cars stayed more common in many European markets because fuel costs, smaller-car preferences and long-established buying habits once made them a natural fit. In the United States, automatics became the default for convenience—and, as the technology improved, they also closed the efficiency gap that had helped manuals endure. So why are manual cars more popular in Europe than in the USA? The historical pattern is clear, but current figures need careful comparison: the latest England statistic covers cars people own, while U.S. figures cover vehicles produced.
What the latest figures show—and what they do not
There is no directly comparable current Europe-versus-U.S. sales split in the figures cited here. England is one country, and a count of cars people own is not the same measure as new-vehicle production.
| Geography and source | Figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| England, UK Department for Transport, National Travel Survey 2025, released 2026 (source) | 59% manual; 41% automatic or semi-automatic | Cars owned in England in 2025—not new-car sales across Europe. |
| United States, U.S. Department of Energy, published March 6, 2023 (source) | More than 99% automatic | U.S. light-duty vehicles produced in 2022; the DOE noted the data were preliminary. |
The measures describe different things, so they cannot be used to calculate a precise current Europe-to-U.S. ratio. The England result is an ownership snapshot that includes vehicles bought in earlier years; the U.S. figure is a production measure. Neither establishes the current share of newly registered cars across Europe.
Why manuals had a stronger foothold in Europe
Fuel economy mattered more to the buying calculation
Historically, fuel prices and market conditions differed between Europe and the United States. A Congressional Research Service report describes how diesel’s fuel-economy and lifetime operating-cost advantages helped attract European buyers in the period it examined. That broader emphasis on operating costs helped sustain demand for economical cars, including many models sold with manual gearboxes.

This is context, not a single-cause explanation: diesel did not by itself create Europe’s manual-car tradition, and the CRS report is historical. Its European and U.S. percentages—about 80% and about 7%, respectively—are figures cited in a 2012 report, not estimates of today’s markets. (Congressional Research Service report)
Smaller cars and established preferences reinforced the pattern
Manual gearboxes fit naturally into many smaller, relatively economical cars, which had a stronger place in a number of European markets. Once manuals were familiar and widely available, buyers had less reason to regard shifting gears as an inconvenience that needed an automatic alternative. Manufacturers, in turn, continued offering manual versions while customers wanted them.

“Europe” is not one uniform car market, however. Countries have different histories and buyers, and automatic adoption has grown in many of them. England’s ownership figure is useful evidence for England, not a proxy for every European country.
Why automatics became dominant in the United States
Convenience made automatics an attractive default
Automatics remove the need to operate a clutch and select gears, a convenience that helped them gain acceptance among U.S. drivers. As automatics became common, buyers increasingly had fewer practical reasons to choose a manual, and manufacturers had less incentive to keep offering one across their lineups.

Better technology changed the efficiency trade-off
Early automatic transmissions were generally less efficient than manuals, but that disadvantage narrowed as designs improved. The U.S. Department of Energy points to lockup torque converters, which reduce friction losses, as well as later developments such as dual-clutch transmissions and continuously variable transmissions (CVTs). The Environmental Protection Agency says modern automatics generally offer better efficiency and performance, and notes that automatics added gears faster than manuals.
That shift helps explain the U.S. production trend. The DOE reported that more than 99% of U.S. light-duty vehicles produced in 2022 had automatic transmissions. The EPA’s longer series shows manuals made up almost 35% of new-vehicle production in model year 1980, but less than 1% from model year 2021 onward. The EPA report covers U.S. production through model year 2024; its figures should not be mistaken for a matching Europe-wide sales series. (EPA 2025 Automotive Trends Report)

Why the gap is narrowing
Manuals remain more common in England’s owned-car stock than automatics, but that does not mean most new cars in Europe are manual. Automatic transmissions have improved, consumer preferences have shifted, and the mix of vehicles available differs by country and model. Meanwhile, U.S. manuals have become rare in production: the EPA says they are now available in only a limited number of vehicles.
These changes make the headline comparison best understood as a long-running market pattern, not a fixed rule about what drivers on either side of the Atlantic choose today. To compare current markets precisely, the data would need to match on geography, year, vehicle type and measure—such as new registrations against new registrations.
