Why the Highlander Hybrid makes a strong family case
Toyota describes the 2026 Highlander Hybrid as a midsize SUV with standard AWD, seating for up to eight, towing capacity up to 3,500 pounds, and 35 combined MPG estimated by the manufacturer. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not a promise of real-world economy or proof that every trim has the same seating configuration. Check the specific vehicle’s configuration before buying.
The mix is appealing for families whose needs exceed a two-row crossover: AWD is standard, and the Highlander offers a third row while still emphasizing fuel economy. The trade-off is that a third row does not answer every space question by itself. Consider how many passengers you routinely carry and how much cargo must fit when all seats are occupied.
What the 2026 rankings do—and do not—say
iSeeCars names the Highlander Hybrid its best family hybrid SUV for 2026, with a Family Car Score of 8.0 out of 10. Its methodology considers reliability, NHTSA and IIHS safety ratings, and family-oriented features. That score is iSeeCars’ ranking result, not a consensus across reviewers or an independent head-to-head test.

Car and Driver’s separate 2026 family hybrid SUV ranking places the Honda CR-V Hybrid first. The two results differ because they come from separate publishers and ranking methods. So the defensible conclusion is that the Highlander is a leading candidate for a particular kind of family—not that it has been proven the best choice for every family.
How it compares with the alternatives
The most useful comparison begins with your household’s constraints, not a single ranking position. A three-row vehicle can be a better match for a family that often carries extra passengers; a two-row option may suit a household that values a smaller footprint or has no regular need for a third row. Compare the exact model year, drivetrain, and trim rather than treating a model name as one fixed specification.

- You regularly need three rows. Check the actual seating configuration and whether the third row works for the passengers who will use it.
- You want AWD without selecting an AWD option. Toyota describes it as standard on this model.
- You want a hybrid midsize SUV with manufacturer-estimated economy. Treat the 35 combined MPG figure as Toyota’s estimate, not a guaranteed result in your driving.
- You sometimes tow. Toyota gives a maximum capacity of up to 3,500 pounds; confirm the vehicle’s rating and your loaded trailer’s weight for the exact configuration.
When another family hybrid may be a better fit
If you rarely carry more than four or five people, compare two-row alternatives on price, cargo room, dimensions, and the equipment you need. The CR-V Hybrid’s first-place finish in Car and Driver’s ranking is a reason to include it on a shortlist, not proof it will suit your family better. If you need a larger three-row vehicle, compare the Grand Highlander Hybrid’s exact seating, cargo, trim, and EPA figures rather than assuming its listed MPG range applies uniformly.

For any finalist, compare the purchase price and included features at the trim level you would buy. Then verify the current safety ratings and reliability information for that model year. The available ranking and specification details do not provide a complete, matched comparison of these factors.
How to decide before you buy
- Write down your normal passenger pattern. Count who rides regularly, not just the maximum number you might carry once a year.
- Check the exact seat configuration. Toyota’s “up to eight” and iSeeCars’ seven-seat listing are not interchangeable; confirm the configuration of the specific trim and vehicle.
- Test the family layout in person. Install or bring the child seats you use, sit in the rows your passengers will occupy, and check cargo room with those seats in use.
- Compare official efficiency figures. Use EPA data for the exact model year, trim, and drivetrain; keep manufacturer estimates and publisher-listed ranges clearly distinguished.
- Verify safety, price, and ownership details. Check current NHTSA and IIHS results, the actual trim’s equipment and price, and relevant reliability evidence and warranty terms.
Check model-year data carefully
Model-year labels matter when comparing specifications. Kia’s Sorento comparison page currently displays 2027 data, so it should not be used as a source for a 2026 Sorento comparison. Kia also cautions that mileage varies with configuration and driving conditions. Confirm any competing model’s specifications against information for the correct year before drawing conclusions.
