Some contemporary reports called Norris’s reply awkward or frosty, but there is no representative measure of how widely it was criticised.
What Norris said to Hamilton
The exchange took place in the cool-down room at the Hungaroring on July 21, 2024, before the podium ceremony. Oscar Piastri, Norris and Hamilton had just finished first, second and third. Formula 1’s official video page identifies the setting and participants, while contemporary reports supplied the dialogue.
As reported by PlanetF1, the conversation went:
- Hamilton: “Phew, you guys are fast.”
- Norris: “You had a fast car seven years ago…”
- Hamilton: “Seven years ago? Long time. Were you here seven years ago?”
- Norris: “Yeah, well, you had a quick car, you made the most of it, and now it’s us.”
- Hamilton: “I wasn’t complaining, I was just complimenting your car.”
These lines are reproduced as contemporary reports transcribed them; the official video page does not provide a text transcript. Formula 1’s cool-down-room video is the primary audiovisual source for the scene.
Why the reply drew criticism
Hamilton’s opening remark was praise for McLaren’s speed. Norris’s reference to Hamilton’s fast car “seven years ago” could sound like a pointed comparison, especially when followed by “now it’s us.” Hamilton’s immediate clarification showed that he did not intend his comment as a complaint about McLaren.

PlanetF1 described the exchange as “somewhat awkward” and “slightly tense”; Fox Sports Australia framed it as an “odd Hamilton swipe” and called the interaction “frosty.” Those are the outlets’ characterisations, not a formal finding about Norris’s intent or Hamilton’s feelings. Online discussion included both criticism and defence, but a self-selected thread cannot show what fans generally thought. No representative poll or attributable expert verdict establishes the scale of the criticism.
The team-orders row was a separate post-race story
The atmosphere after the race also reflected a more consequential McLaren issue, separate from Norris’s exchange with Hamilton. Piastri led after the start, but McLaren’s pit sequence temporarily put Norris ahead. The team asked Norris to restore the order, and he yielded late in the race so Piastri could take his first Grand Prix victory.
In the official FIA post-race press conference, Norris said he had been ready to give the position back and explained: “I don’t need to. I know what I’m going to do and what I’m not going to do. Of course, I’m going to just question it and challenge it, and that’s what I did.” He added that he would have returned the place unless the team changed its instruction. Those comments concerned the team-order decision, not his conversation with Hamilton.

In a July 25 Formula 1 report, Norris said McLaren had reviewed the team-orders incident and that he could probably have handled some things differently. He said discussions with Piastri and team principal Andrea Stella had made matters clear. Piastri also described the team atmosphere as strong and said he had spoken with Norris and Stella. These later remarks addressed the team situation; they do not establish what Norris intended in the cool-down-room exchange.
