McLaren has identified a recurring straight-line-speed deficit on Lando Norris’s car, but the cause has not been established. What is happening to Norris on the straights?
Norris reported getting a good exit from a corner but losing speed by the end of the straight. The symptom had appeared at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix the previous week and was reported again on October 3. Stella described the issue as a lack of straight-line speed on Norris’s car. In a power-limited section, he said, the car accelerated somewhat less and reached somewhat less top speed than expected when other parameters were held equal. Stella estimated the difference at around 1–2 km/h and said it could cost more than a tenth of a second per lap, possibly one to two tenths. These figures describe his assessment of the current symptom; the report does not provide a primary timing-data release or telemetry dataset that independently verifies them.

That has not been established. Stella said a simple energy-deployment problem would be easier to identify, while other power-unit behavior could be harder to monitor. McLaren was checking multiple possible contributors, including power-unit behavior, chassis-related factors and aerodynamic drag. The available account does not determine whether the source is the power unit, the car around it, or a combination.

The Baku context points to several avenues rather than a single culprit. In a September 27, 2026 report, Formula1.com quoted Stella saying McLaren needed to improve aerodynamic drag and review whether its gear ratios suited circuits where top speed matters. He also said comparisons with Mercedes showed McLaren’s power unit had not been optimized for the race. That supports examining optimization alongside the car’s aerodynamic and setup characteristics; it does not establish a defect in the Mercedes hardware.
Autosport likewise reported Stella describing Mercedes’s Baku advantage as an overall package involving chassis, gear ratios and power unit. He cautioned against assuming Mercedes had a different power unit or was necessarily using it better. Autosport’s Baku coverage therefore adds context, but not a confirmed cause for Norris’s later symptom.

What do the Baku speed comparisons show?
Autosport reported that in Baku qualifying Norris’s top speed was 3.4 km/h below teammate Oscar Piastri’s and 11.5 km/h below Mercedes driver George Russell’s. These are Baku comparisons, separate from Stella’s October 3 estimate of a 1–2 km/h difference. They should not be combined into one measurement: circuit and session, speed-trap or track segment, peak speed versus speed along a straight, and tow or traffic conditions can all affect a comparison. The cited reporting does not supply a complete common dataset across those factors, so the figures do not establish a like-for-like ranking of the cars.

What is McLaren’s relationship with Mercedes HPP?
McLaren uses Mercedes power units, while Mercedes also runs a works team. The teams collaborate on power-unit preparation and optimization, but that relationship alone does not show that HPP caused Norris’s speed loss.

In July 2026, Formula1.com reported that McLaren had begun using power-unit simulation tools that had previously been available to Mercedes. Stella said the models help teams assess power-unit responses and optimize deployment, driving and gearing. He characterized the timing of McLaren’s access as a timeline issue and said McLaren and HPP worked together to make the tools available. That is relevant background on customer-team preparation, not evidence that tool access caused the current symptom. Formula1.com’s report on the simulation tools covers that collaboration.
Stella had also described a broader McLaren-Mercedes performance gap earlier in the season as about three to four tenths per lap, estimating roughly 70% of it was in corners and 30% on straights. Motorsport.com reported that he cited aerodynamic drag and power-unit exploitation as possibilities and said collaboration with HPP had improved. Those earlier estimates concern a team-to-team comparison at that point in the season, not Norris’s individual October deficit. Motorsport.com’s earlier-season account provides that separate context.

Does Stella’s wording mean he publicly demanded answers from HPP?
The reporting establishes that McLaren was investigating and seeking to understand the deficit. It does not establish a direct public demand to HPP, a confirmed dispute between McLaren and Mercedes, or an acknowledged power-unit fault. “Demands answers” is a characterization in the headline, not a verified description of a confrontation.
