KTM’s automated manual transmission needs a Park setting because its normally open centrifugal clutch does not hold the rear wheel when the engine is off. Selecting a gear alone therefore cannot secure the stopped motorcycle on a slope; a mechanical pawl inside the gearbox locks it against unwanted rolling.
Why a selected gear does not secure KTM’s AMT
On a conventional clutch-operated motorcycle, leaving the transmission in gear can make the engine and drivetrain resist rear-wheel rotation. KTM’s AMT works differently: its centrifugal clutch is normally open, so it disconnects the engine from the drivetrain at rest. With the engine off, a selected gear does not provide the same parked restraint.
KTM’s technical guide says the clutch cannot hold the rear wheel on a slope. The Park setting addresses that specific gap with a mechanical locking pawl inside the gearbox. KTM describes its purpose simply: “P stands for PARKING, which prevents the motorcycle from rolling.” (KTM AMT technical guide; the publication date is not stated.)
What Park does—and what it does not mean
Park is a gearbox lock for a stationary motorcycle, not a clutch mode for riding. The available KTM descriptions establish that the pawl prevents unwanted rolling; they do not establish that it is a handbrake or a replacement for every other parking precaution. The detailed design and durability specifications of the pawl are not stated in the cited material.

How KTM’s AMT controls work
KTM calls the system AMT, for Automated Manual Transmission. It offers automatic shifting as well as manual shifting without a clutch lever. The announced selector sequence is P–N–1–2–3–4–5–6.
- Park and Neutral: selected using the handlebar shifting paddle, with the engine on or off.
- First gear: the front or rear brake must be applied to engage it.
- Moving off: in first gear, raising engine speed engages the centrifugal clutch and moves the motorcycle forward.
KTM presents the centrifugal-clutch operation as a way to make hill starts, stopping and low-speed maneuvering easier and to prevent stalling. Those are KTM’s stated benefits, not independent test findings. KTM also says its shifts take 50 milliseconds and compares that figure with a traditional transmission using Quickshifter+; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independently verified measurement in the cited sources. How this differs from a conventional transmission
The important distinction is not simply that one transmission shifts automatically. A conventional motorcycle clutch lets the rider connect or disconnect engine power with a lever; a gear left engaged can provide drivetrain resistance when parked. KTM’s AMT automates clutch operation and shifting, including clutchless manual shifts, but its normally open clutch leaves the parked bike without that same gear-based restraint. The separate Park pawl supplies the lock.
Automated manual systems are also appearing elsewhere in motorcycling: Yamaha announced its Y-AMT system, which automates clutch and gearshift operation, in July 2024. That is industry context, not evidence about KTM’s specific Park mechanism. (Yamaha Motor, July 26, 2024)
