Ford’s technical description documents the engine’s distinctive reverse-flow layout, and a 2009 report describes a scorpion mascot made from engine-part imagery. But the available sources do not establish that either the layout or the mascot explains why Ford chose the name.
What “Scorpion” means
Ford engineers used “Scorpion” as a codename while developing the 6.7L Power Stroke V8. An SAE technical paper published on April 12, 2010, describes the engine as designed and developed by Ford for full-size pickups and light commercial vehicles, and explicitly identifies “Scorpion” as its code name. SAE International’s paper, “The New Ford 6.7L V-8 Turbocharged Diesel Engine”, lists Ford Motor Company engineers among its authors.
Why the engine’s layout gets mentioned
The 6.7L has a reverse-flow arrangement: exhaust is routed inside the V between the cylinder banks, while the intake is positioned outside the V. Ford’s 2014 description says this places the turbocharger between the banks and discusses shorter exhaust flow to the turbo, responsiveness, heat management, and reduced noise, vibration, and harshness. Ford’s F-650/F-750 announcement explains the design, but does not say it inspired the codename. The engineering feature is documented; a causal link to the name is not.
The Scorpion mascot
A contemporary report also connects the engine program with scorpion imagery. In a September 16, 2009 article, Cars.com reported that Ford’s Scorpion mascot was assembled from digital diagrams of engine hardware: connecting rods formed the pincers, eight fuel injectors made up the legs, and an EGR throttle body served as the eyes. That account documents a mascot associated with the program, not the reason the codename was selected.

What is—and isn’t—known about the name
The evidence supports a precise answer: Scorpion was the development codename for Ford’s 6.7L Power Stroke. The technical layout and the mascot help explain why the name is associated with the engine, but the cited sources do not provide a definitive naming rationale. Treat claims that the name came specifically from the reverse-flow design, the turbocharger, or a particular performance trait as unverified.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- BUILT TO PREVENT A COMMON 6.7 POWERSTROKE FAILURE – Replaces the factory plastic upper fuel filter housing that can crack, leak diesel fuel, cause fuel pressure loss and potentially create a fire hazard.
- 5-MINUTE TOOL-FREE INSTALL – Installs in minutes using the factory mounting location with no tools, no cutting, no splicing, and no modification of the original Ford fuel lines.
- EASY TOOL-FREE FILTER CHANGES – Service the fuel filter without wrenches, sockets or specialty tools. A simpler design means faster maintenance every time the filter needs to be replaced.
- 4-MICRON BALDWIN FUEL FILTRATION – Includes a Baldwin 4-micron fuel filter designed to provide filtration matched to the factory filter while using a readily serviceable replacement element.
- REDESIGNED FOR MAXIMUM LEAK PROTECTION – Updated housing uses fewer plugs and an O-ring sealed nipple to reduce potential leak points while replacing the failure-prone factory plastic fuel filter housing.
