Harley-Davidson dealership closures reflect several pressures, not one companywide cause: weaker motorcycle demand in 2025, tight dealer economics and efforts to reduce inventory. But the latest reported quarter showed a modest sales rebound, and available sources do not establish how many U.S. dealerships have closed. Some reported changes may be mergers, relocations or ownership transfers rather than shutdowns.
What is driving dealership closures?
Harley-Davidson depends primarily on independent dealers to sell motorcycles to retail customers. In its fiscal 2025 Form 10-K, published in 2026, the company said dealer capability and financial capacity matter to its ability to create demand and sell motorcycles and related products and services. That makes falling retail demand consequential for dealers, but it does not mean every location faces the same circumstances.
Fewer new-bike sales put pressure on dealer revenue
Harley-Davidson reported that worldwide retail sales of new motorcycles fell 12.4% in 2025 compared with 2024. U.S. sales declined 12.9%, while international sales fell 11.5%. The company attributed the downturn to a challenging macroeconomic environment. These are company-reported annual figures, not a measure of dealership closures. Harley-Davidson annual reports
Lower new-bike sales can leave an independent retailer with fewer transactions to support its broader business. Dealer representative George Gatto told RevZilla that dealers were not making enough money; that is a dealer-side diagnosis, not a finding that explains every closure. RevZilla also reported closures attributed to poor management, a worsening economy, falling sales or economic pressure. Some businesses did not publicly give a reason. Inventory and shipments are being adjusted
Harley-Davidson has also been managing dealer inventory by reducing production and shipments. RevZilla reported company inventory figures of 68,000 motorcycles at dealers worldwide at the end of Q2 2024 and 49,000 at the end of Q2 2025. By the end of Q2 2026, Harley-Davidson said global dealer inventory of new motorcycles was 17% lower year over year, with shipments below retail sales in line with inventory management. Inventory reductions describe the company’s distribution adjustment; they do not by themselves establish why a particular dealer closed. Local costs and profitability differ by dealer
A dealer’s outcome can also depend on local operating costs, management and its ability to earn money from motorcycles and related business. RevZilla reported dealer concerns about remodeling costs and direct online sales, but Harley-Davidson management declined to comment to that outlet. The available reporting does not establish that either issue caused closures generally, or that corporate policy alone caused any specific closure.

How many Harley-Davidson dealerships have closed?
There is no verified, comparable year-over-year U.S. dealer-location count or audited total of closures established by the available sources. A November 2025 article reported that more than 650 U.S. locations remained, but that figure does not, on its own, show how many locations closed over a defined period. RevZilla’s reporting on dealership closures
It is also important to distinguish an outright shutdown from a merger, relocation or change in ownership. Reports of stores changing hands or consolidating do not necessarily mean the local dealership stopped operating. Without a consistent geography, time period and counting method, a single national closure figure could mislead.

Is Harley-Davidson abandoning its dealer network?
No. In May 2026, Harley-Davidson’s “Back to the Bricks” strategy described the exclusive dealer network as a competitive strength. The company set a target to double dealer profitability in 2026 and double it again by 2029, while prioritizing share gains in motorcycles, used motorcycles, parts and accessories, and apparel and licensing. Those are announced goals and priorities, not evidence that the profitability targets have already been achieved. Harley-Davidson’s Back to the Bricks announcement
The strategy statement signals an effort to improve dealer economics, but it cannot guarantee the future of every independent business. A dealer can close for local reasons even while the manufacturer says it intends to strengthen the overall network.

What changed in the latest reported results?
The 2025 annual sales decline is not the whole current picture. In Q2 2026, Harley-Davidson reported that worldwide motorcycle retail sales rose 1% year over year and North American retail sales rose 3%. International results were mixed. The company also reported that global new-motorcycle dealer inventory was down 17% year over year at quarter end. These are quarterly comparisons, not proof of a full-year recovery or an end to dealer pressure. Harley-Davidson Q2 2026 results
