General Motors confirmed on October 21, 2025, that it was ending production of its BrightDrop electric delivery vans at CAMI Assembly in Ingersoll, Ontario. The decision followed a production suspension that began in May. GM said the vans would not be shifted to another plant; CAMI’s future use remained under assessment.
What changed: a temporary pause became an end to production
The October announcement was not simply an extension of the earlier pause. In April 2025, GM announced a temporary production halt, citing demand and high inventory, and said it remained committed to BrightDrop production at CAMI. Production was suspended in May. On October 21, GM confirmed production would end at Ingersoll and would not move to another site. The Associated Press reported on the April pause; GM’s October announcement established the later decision.

Why GM says it ended BrightDrop production
GM said the commercial electric delivery van market developed “much slower than expected” and that CAMI had been operating below capacity. The company also pointed to regulatory changes and the elimination of U.S. tax credits as factors that made the business more challenging. GM described the decision as part of broader adjustments to North American electric-vehicle capacity, not as a standalone assessment of CAMI workers’ performance.
Those are GM’s stated reasons, not an independent measurement of the commercial van market. The company’s president and managing director of GM Canada, Kristian Aquilina, said: “The decision to end production of the BrightDrop electric delivery van is driven by market demand and in no way reflects the commitment and skill of our workforce at CAMI.”

The April explanation for the temporary halt was narrower: GM cited demand and high inventory. That earlier account should not be read as a definitive explanation of every factor behind the October decision, nor as proof that tariffs played no role in later business decisions.
CAMI’s future and the impact on workers
GM said it would assess CAMI for future opportunities and work with employees, Unifor, and the Canadian and Ontario governments on next steps. Its announcement did not identify a replacement vehicle or say that the plant had permanently closed. The facility’s future production use was also unclear in an October 22 statement from Ingersoll Mayor Brian Petrie.

GM said hourly employees would receive six months of salary, with possible lump-sum payments and other benefits under the collective agreement. The company said the future of the CAMI workforce remained uncertain while next steps were evaluated.
Mayor Petrie said 1,200 Unifor members and their families were affected. That was the mayor’s description of the local impact, not a confirmed count of workers laid off as a result of the production-end decision. In the April pause coverage, the AP reported a union account of around 500 indefinite layoffs under a then-planned schedule. That figure concerned the pause period and should not be treated as the final job-loss count from the October decision. The Town of Ingersoll published Petrie’s statement.

What GM reported about the financial charges
In its investor presentation on EV capacity adjustments and 2025 results, GM reported $1.8 billion in non-cash impairments in the fourth quarter of 2025, largely driven by discontinuing BrightDrop and impairing other EV-related assets. GM also reported $4.2 billion in fourth-quarter cash charges associated with contract cancellations and supplier settlements; it did not identify that amount as BrightDrop-only. Together, the two categories made up $6.0 billion in total fourth-quarter EV-related charges. GM’s investor presentation details the categories and scope.

GM introduced BrightDrop at CES in January 2021. CAMI began producing the electric delivery vans in December 2022, according to GM’s plant history. In August 2024, GM announced that BrightDrop would join the Chevrolet brand, with production continuing at CAMI and sales and service offered through participating Chevrolet commercial EV dealers. That arrangement was the context before the 2025 pause and subsequent end of production. GM’s 2024 announcement describes the Chevrolet branding and dealer arrangement.
