Why GM and Honda Abandoned Their Affordable EV Plans

GM and Honda discontinued their planned affordable EV series after concluding it would be difficult as a business. Here’s what was confirmed—and what was only reported context.

GM and Honda ended their planned affordable-EV program in October 2023 because, after studying it, they concluded it would be difficult to make the project work as a business. Their public joint explanation was brief; contemporaneous reporting pointed to high interest rates, battery costs, softening EV demand and GM’s shift toward profitability as commercial context—not as a complete list of officially confirmed reasons.

What GM and Honda had planned—and what they canceled

In April 2022, the automakers announced a plan to co-develop a global series of affordable electric vehicles on a new architecture using GM’s next-generation Ultium battery technology. The focus was compact crossovers, a segment the companies said represented more than 13 million vehicles in annual global volume. They planned to begin global production in 2027. That figure described the size of the vehicle segment, not EV sales. GM’s 2022 announcement

The program was a proposal, not a lineup of finished vehicles or models that reached showrooms. On October 25, 2023, GM and Honda said they had mutually decided to discontinue it after “extensive studies and analysis.” GM spokesperson Darryll Harrison said: “After extensive studies and analysis, we have come to a mutual decision to discontinue the program.” TechCrunch’s October 2023 report

Why did the affordable-EV partnership end?

The stated reason: the business case was difficult

The companies did not publish a detailed joint accounting of why the program was dropped. In reporting by Reuters carried by Investing.com, Honda CEO Toshihiro Mibe described the conclusion this way: “After studying this for a year, we decided that this would be difficult as a business, so at the moment, we are ending development of an affordable EV.” This is Mibe’s reported explanation, separate from the joint statement. The reported commercial pressures

Contemporaneous coverage linked the decision to a challenging environment for lower-cost EVs. TechCrunch cited high interest rates, battery costs and softening demand. Reuters reporting also situated the cancellation within GM’s shift toward making its EV business profitable and away from certain entry-level segments. These factors help explain the business pressures around the decision, but the companies did not identify them as a definitive, jointly agreed list of causes.

  • Interest rates: Higher borrowing costs can make large vehicle purchases harder for customers to finance.
  • Battery costs: Expensive battery packs make it harder to deliver a lower-priced EV while preserving a viable business case.
  • Demand: Softening EV demand added uncertainty about the scale and timing of sales.
  • Profitability: GM’s reported emphasis on EV profitability put pressure on plans targeting more affordable segments.

The companies’ original ambition helps explain the tension: GM and Honda wanted to reduce EV costs enough to make ownership accessible to more buyers, but the economics of doing so were not established as workable. Their 2022 announcement framed affordability as central to the project, while Mibe’s later reported comment characterized the business case as difficult.

Did the cancellation end all GM–Honda cooperation?

No—not according to coverage at the time. Reports in October 2023 said the decision did not end every area of cooperation: work associated with the Honda Prologue and the companies’ separate relationship with Cruise were described as continuing. That is a time-specific account of their relationship in 2023, not a claim about the status of those arrangements today. Reuters’ October 2023 report

How Honda’s 2026 EV cancellations fit in

Honda’s later strategy changes are related context, but they were not part of the GM–Honda program canceled in 2023. On March 12, 2026, Honda announced it would cancel development and launch of the Honda 0 SUV, Honda 0 Saloon and Acura RSX, which had been planned for North American production. These were separate Honda projects.

Honda cited slower expansion of the U.S. EV market, easing fossil-fuel regulations and revised incentives, weaker competitiveness in China amid software-oriented competition, and declining profitability in its automobile business. The company said launching the three vehicles under those conditions could lead to further long-term losses. It said it would strengthen hybrid models, reassess how it allocates resources and keep future EV introductions flexible while monitoring market trends and profitability. Honda’s March 2026 announcement

Honda gave a preliminary maximum estimate of up to 2.5 trillion yen in losses associated with its broader automobile-electrification strategy reassessment. That estimate applies to the broader reassessment, not solely to the canceled GM–Honda program.

What the decision means for buyers

There are no canceled-program prices, feature lists or road tests to compare: the proposed affordable EVs did not reach production. The useful takeaway is strategic. Automakers must balance a lower purchase price against battery expense, expected demand, regional competition, incentives and the ability to earn a return. The GM–Honda plan showed that a large partnership and a shared battery platform did not, by themselves, guarantee an affordable vehicle program that both companies considered commercially viable.

For shoppers, the canceled plan should not be treated as a promised model delayed to a later date. It was discontinued. Honda’s 2026 shift toward hybrids and flexible EV launches is a separate update to Honda’s strategy, not a revival or continuation of the joint program.
