Why Gas Rose Above $3 in Every State in March 2026—and What Happened Next

Every state’s regular-gas average moved above $3 in early March 2026 as a Strait of Hormuz disruption pushed crude prices higher. Here is what caused the surge, why emergency reserves could not instantly fix it, how prices changed through August, and what drivers can realistically do.

Gas prices crossed the $3-per-gallon mark in every state average during the first week of March 2026 after the national average climbed about 60 cents between March 2 and March 9. The immediate cause was the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, which severely disrupted oil and refined-product movements through the Strait of Hormuz. That disruption pushed crude oil above $100 per barrel and quickly raised the cost of supplying gasoline to U.S. drivers.

The $3 figure applied to each state’s average price for regular gasoline—not necessarily to every station. The surge also did not end with the March headline: prices briefly eased in June, rebounded in July, and reached $4.141 per gallon in the latest official weekly EIA data available in the supplied record, for the week of August 10, 2026.

What happened to gas prices in March 2026?

AAA-affiliated reporting said the national average rose approximately 60 cents per gallon from March 2 to March 9, 2026. That increase was large enough to push the average price for regular gasoline above $3 in every state.

A separate AAA update on March 12 described the national average as having risen nearly 35 cents in one week. Those figures refer to different measurement windows and publication dates, so they should not be blended into one exact daily change. The consistent point is that gasoline prices moved sharply higher in early March, after the national average had stayed below $3 since early December 2025.

The increase came shortly after military action involving the United States, Israel, and Iran began in late February. The conflict created an immediate fear that the world petroleum supply chain could be interrupted, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz. Crude prices repeatedly moved above $100 per barrel during the initial shock.

Why the Strait of Hormuz affected U.S. pump prices

The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow maritime chokepoint through which a substantial share of the world’s oil and gas normally travels. On March 11, the International Energy Agency said oil exports through the strait had fallen to less than 10% of their pre-conflict level.

That matters to U.S. drivers even though the United States produces a large amount of oil domestically. Oil is traded in a global market, and U.S. crude, refined products, imports, and exports remain connected to international prices. When a major supply route becomes difficult or dangerous to use, traders price in both the oil that may be unavailable and the risk of further disruption.

The effect reaches the pump through several stages:

  1. Disruption risk raises crude prices. Refiners must pay more for crude or compete for alternative supplies.
  2. Shipping becomes slower, more expensive, or less reliable. Tanker traffic and insurance costs can affect both crude and finished gasoline.
  3. Refiners face tighter feedstock and product markets. Even a country with substantial oil production can experience regional shortages of the particular crude or gasoline blend that its refineries need.
  4. Wholesale gasoline prices rise. Retailers then pass much of that increase through to drivers, although the timing varies by region and station.

The gasoline-blend switchover was a secondary factor in the early-March increase. Seasonal fuel specifications can affect refinery operations, inventories, and the cost of moving gasoline between regions. It was not the primary cause of the shock, but it made an already strained market more sensitive.

Does “gas above $3 in every state” mean every station charged more than $3?

No. The March report concerned state averages for regular gasoline. It did not mean that every individual gas station in every state had posted a price above $3.

Prices within a state can differ substantially because of:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • state and local fuel taxes;
  • distance from refineries, pipelines, ports, and fuel terminals;
  • regional transportation costs;
  • local gasoline specifications and seasonal-blend requirements;
  • competition between stations; and
  • local demand and inventory timing.

The Energy Information Administration’s retail-price series includes taxes and reports national, regional, and state averages. An average is useful for identifying a broad market trend, but it cannot describe the price at a particular station on a particular day.

The $3 threshold was therefore mainly a psychological and newsworthy marker. It had no special legal meaning and was not an economic cutoff that automatically changed the market. It mattered because prices crossed it rapidly after beginning from a relatively low level.

How much did the increase cost drivers?

A 60-cent-per-gallon increase adds approximately:

Fuel purchased Additional cost at $0.60 per gallon
15 gallons $9
20 gallons $12
50 gallons $30

Those are simple illustrations of the national-average change, not a promise that every driver or station experienced exactly the same increase. The actual effect depends on the vehicle’s tank size, fuel economy, driving distance, local prices, and how quickly a station passed through wholesale-cost changes.

What did the emergency oil release do?

On March 11, the 32 IEA member countries agreed to make 400 million barrels from emergency reserves available to the market. The IEA described it as the largest collective emergency stock action in its history.

The U.S. portion was reported by AAA as a planned release of 172 million barrels from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve over four months. The Department of Energy describes the SPR as an emergency crude-oil reserve designed to reduce the effects of petroleum-supply disruptions. Its authorized storage capacity is 714 million barrels.

Releasing reserve oil can help in two ways. It can add physical supply when commercial inventories or transportation routes are under pressure, and it can reassure markets that governments have another source of crude available. Both effects may reduce some of the upward pressure on oil prices.

But an SPR release is not a guarantee that pump prices will immediately return to their pre-conflict levels. The reserve contains crude oil, not finished gasoline, and it cannot instantly reopen the Strait of Hormuz, restore normal tanker traffic, repair production outages, or solve a regional shortage of a specific gasoline blend. Crude still has to reach refineries, be processed, transported, and delivered to stations.

What happened after the March surge?

The price shock continued to affect the market well after every state average crossed $3.

April: a brief weekly decline

On April 16, AAA reported that the national average had fallen 7 cents in one week to $4.09 per gallon. Crude prices had remained below $100 temporarily, but maritime traffic through Hormuz was still subdued. That combination showed why a weekly decline did not necessarily mean the underlying supply risk had disappeared.

June: prices moved below $4

By June 25, AAA reported a national average of $3.91 per gallon. Falling crude prices and progress in U.S.-Iran negotiations contributed to the improvement. The decline provided relief, but it was dependent on market and geopolitical conditions rather than a permanent change in the cost of supplying gasoline.

July: the rebound returned

On July 23, AAA reported that the national average had risen 15 cents in one week to $4.09, with most states averaging at least $4. AAA attributed the increase to crude prices in the $90-per-barrel range and continuing volatility related to the Strait of Hormuz.

August: different sources showed different numbers

The latest official weekly EIA figure in the supplied record was $4.141 per gallon for regular gasoline for the week of August 10, 2026. AAA’s indexed fuel-price page displayed a national average of $4.003 as of July 20, while its newsroom index listed a July 30 release titled “Little Change to National Average, Pump Prices Remain High.”

These figures should not be treated as contradictory measurements of the same moment. EIA’s figure is a weekly series, while AAA’s figures come from its own update schedule and methodology. A reliable comparison always identifies the organization and date instead of combining a live or indexed AAA number with a later EIA weekly average.

What could make gasoline prices fall again?

The outlook depends more on the conflict and the petroleum supply chain than on the March $3 threshold itself. The main variables to watch are:

  • Commercial shipping through Hormuz: sustained restoration of tanker traffic would reduce one of the largest sources of supply risk.
  • Production outages: the longer oil production remains offline, the greater the potential shortage.
  • Crude benchmarks: sustained declines in crude prices usually reduce wholesale gasoline costs, although retail prices may respond with a delay.
  • Refinery utilization: refineries must be able to turn available crude into the gasoline products needed by each region.
  • Gasoline inventories: low inventories leave prices more exposed to another disruption or demand increase.
  • Seasonal demand and fuel specifications: the driving season and blend changes can add pressure even when crude prices are stable.
  • Emergency-reserve releases: the timing and scale of releases can affect supply and market expectations.

The Energy Information Administration’s July 2026 Short-Term Energy Outlook modeled gasoline prices, crude prices, production, consumption, and inventories. However, that forecast was completed July 1 and therefore predates later August developments. Its figures are best read as conditional scenarios, not as a replacement for the latest weekly or daily pump-price data.

  • For double sided, three sides and four sides display, it can be controlled from the signal port of the control card.
  • When the oil price card is set up, the most important thing is the environmental impact of the gas station. It is usually judged by the sight angle, the line of sight height and the line of sight that the driver passes through the gas station. Then choose the shape and quantity of the price tag

For example, EIA’s April outlook assumed that the conflict would not continue beyond April and that shipping through Hormuz would gradually resume. If those assumptions proved wrong, the price path would also be different. Any forecast should therefore be stated conditionally: prices are more likely to ease if traffic resumes, outages end, crude prices decline, and inventories recover; they are more likely to rise if the disruption persists or expands.

What can drivers do to use less fuel?

Maintenance and driving habits cannot erase a 60-cent-per-gallon market shock, but they can prevent avoidable fuel waste. AAA recommends the following:

  • Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.
  • Address an illuminated check-engine light promptly. A warning light can indicate a problem affecting engine operation or emissions.
  • Keep the tires inflated to the pressure specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Use the pressure listed on the driver’s-doorjamb label or in the owner’s manual—not the maximum pressure molded into the tire sidewall.
  • Avoid hard acceleration and jackrabbit starts.
  • Limit unnecessary idling.
  • Reduce highway speed when practical. AAA notes that aerodynamic drag causes fuel economy to decline significantly as speed rises above 50 mph.

One inexpensive maintenance check that can help protect fuel economy: A digital tire pressure gauge lets you check all four tires when they are cold and identify underinflation before a long trip. It is a task-enabling tool, not a promise of a fixed fuel-cost reduction, and CarCody has not tested or selected a particular model. An inflator may be useful if pressure is low, but the gauge is still needed to verify the final pressure.

How to read the next gas-price update

When checking a new number, look for four details:

  1. Source: AAA and EIA may report different figures.
  2. Date or week: a July number is not the March price, and a weekly average is not a station’s current sign.
  3. Fuel grade: the March threshold referred to regular gasoline.
  4. Geography: a national or state average does not tell you what a nearby station charges.

That discipline is especially important during a fast-moving geopolitical disruption. A lower number may reflect a temporary crude-price dip, while a higher number may arrive before the full effect of a new supply problem is visible in official inventory data.

Source and date note

This account uses the supplied reporting and official data from AAA, the Energy Information Administration, the International Energy Agency, and the Department of Energy. Key reference points are AAA reporting from March 12, April 16, June 25, and July 23, 2026; the IEA emergency-release announcement of March 11; DOE information about the Strategic Petroleum Reserve; and EIA weekly retail-price data for the week of August 10, 2026. Because the figures use different update schedules and methodologies, each price above is identified by source and date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did every gas station in every state charge more than $3 in March 2026?

No. The report referred to state averages for regular gasoline. Individual stations could be higher or lower because of taxes, transportation costs, local competition, regional supply, and demand.

Why did U.S. gas prices rise even though the country produces a lot of oil?

U.S. fuel markets remain connected to global crude and refined-product markets. A major disruption through the Strait of Hormuz can raise global crude prices, shipping costs, and regional supply risk even when domestic production is substantial.

Did the Strategic Petroleum Reserve release guarantee lower gas prices?

No. The release could add crude supply and reassure markets, but it could not instantly restore tanker traffic, end production outages, or solve refinery and regional-blend constraints.

What is the latest gasoline price cited in this report?

The latest official weekly figure in the supplied record is the EIA’s $4.141-per-gallon U.S. average for regular gasoline for the week of August 10, 2026. AAA’s figures use a different update schedule and methodology, so the source and date should always be checked.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The March 2026 move above $3 in every state was the retail-market consequence of a global oil-supply shock centered on the Strait of Hormuz, not a new legal price threshold. Emergency reserves and later geopolitical relief helped at times, but prices remained highly sensitive to shipping, outages, crude benchmarks, refinery conditions, and inventories. Drivers can reduce waste with proper maintenance, correct tire pressure, smoother acceleration, less idling, and lower highway speeds—but no maintenance trick can fully cancel a market-wide increase of 60 cents per gallon.
