Farley has since raised the possibility of an affordable electric performance sedan, but Ford has not announced a production sedan or confirmed that one is in development.
Why Ford discontinued the Fusion and Focus
Farley’s explanation was about unit economics, not simply a lack of buyers. In an April 29, 2026 report on his appearance on Ford Authority’s Rapid Response podcast, he said Ford did not have a “competitive cost base” for sedans in the U.S. He said that investing in a revived Fusion or Focus would leave Ford losing money against the Corolla or Civic. Farley put the comparison at about $4,000 per vehicle; that is his stated comparison, not an independently audited calculation for either model. Ford Authority

Farley said Ford needed to reduce its platform costs before it could compete in the segment. A car can still have customers and fail to make financial sense if the manufacturer cannot build it at a competitive cost and earn an acceptable return.

Where Ford redirected its investment
Ford Blue and Model e president Andrew Frick said the company put investment into vehicles where it believed it could compete more strongly, including the Bronco, Maverick, Bronco Sport and Tremor products. Frick said he agreed with the decision to discontinue Ford’s North American sedan lineup. Ford Authority

- Revell’s easy-to-assemble ’32 Ford Tudor sedan kit can be built as a traditional “highboy” hot rod or a resto-style street rod with full fenders.
- Choice of two V-8 engines, an old-school flathead hopped up with a selection of speed equipment or a Nineties-style 5.0-liter small-block.
- Choose classic kidney-bean-style slotted mags with separate three-bar spinners or wire-spoke wheels, each with a set of big-and-little tires.
- Molded in white and clear with chrome plated parts and soft black tires. Paint and glue required(not included).
That helps explain why Ford could judge sedans to be a poor use of capital while continuing to invest in other vehicle types: the decision was about where the company saw a stronger competitive position, not a claim that every sedan customer had disappeared.
What Ford’s sedan-market comments do—and don’t—show
Frick said sedans had declined from 50% of the market to 16–17%, as reported by Car and Driver from his interview with Automotive News. The cited account does not give the years for either figure, so they should be read as Frick’s comparison rather than a dated market-share series. He also acknowledged that some customers still buy sedans. Car and Driver

A smaller segment is not automatically an unviable one. Ford’s stated concern was whether it could compete on cost and make the investment pay off, even with remaining sedan demand.
Could Ford bring back a sedan?
Farley has floated an affordable, high-performance, rear-wheel-drive electric sedan as an idea. He also remarked that the sedan shape is aerodynamically clean. Those comments describe a possibility, not confirmation of an approved Ford vehicle program. Autoblog

Frick has said a new sedan would have to make sense within Ford’s existing portfolio, potentially as part of an existing product family. That has prompted speculation about a four-door Mustang, but Ford has not announced such a model. Car and Driver

- Competitive costs: Ford would need a cost base that lets the vehicle challenge established rivals without the losses Farley described.
- A viable business case: Expected sales and margins would need to justify committing capital to the segment.
- A fit with Ford’s lineup: Frick said the vehicle would need to make sense in the existing portfolio, possibly within an established product family.
Ford has not confirmed whether it will build a sedan, what it would be called, whether it would be electric, when it might arrive or what it would cost. Until the company announces a program, a Fusion or Focus revival—or a four-door Mustang—remains speculation. The Drive
