Ford ended production of the battery-electric F-150 Lightning in its current form, but it has not abandoned the Lightning name: the company has announced a next-generation version with an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) powertrain. Ford says the change reflects a combination of slower-than-expected EV adoption, market and policy shifts, and its assessment that the EV business needed a different strategy to reach long-term profitability.
Why did Ford discontinue the current electric F-150?
Ford’s December 2025 Form 8-K gives the company’s explanation. It cites lower-than-anticipated electric-vehicle adoption across the industry, changing customer sentiment, competition, pricing dynamics, legal and policy changes, and the termination of U.S. EV tax credits. Ford also said potential changes to federal emissions and fuel-economy standards, along with limits on state zero-emission-vehicle requirements, could further disrupt the market. That is Ford’s stated rationale, not proof that one policy change caused the decision or that customers simply did not want the truck. The filing describes several interacting market and policy factors and Ford’s own profitability assessment; it does not establish that every EV maker faces the same economics.

Is the F-150 Lightning name ending?
No. Ford says production of the current battery-electric generation has concluded, but it has announced a next-generation F-150 Lightning with an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) architecture. The distinction is important: the current truck is a battery-electric vehicle, while the planned successor is intended to use a generator-backed system to extend range.
How Ford describes the EREV
Ford says electric motors will propel the next-generation truck, with a high-power generator-backed system providing extended range. That is the architecture Ford has announced; it should not be casually described as a conventional hybrid in which an engine may also mechanically drive the wheels. What the 700-plus-mile estimate means
Ford has announced an estimated range of more than 700 miles for the future EREV. This is a manufacturer estimate, not a finalized production specification or an independently tested result. Ford has not announced a specific availability date in its current official FAQ, nor has it published final production specifications in the official material cited here. What Ford’s shift means for its EV plans
Ford is changing its mix of vehicles and powertrains rather than announcing an end to its electric-vehicle plans. Its stated roadmap puts greater emphasis on hybrids and more affordable EVs, while assigning different powertrains to different vehicle uses.

These are Ford’s announced plans, and schedules can change. The company’s decision does not establish that EV demand has stopped growing, that electric pickups are universally unviable, or that other automakers will make the same choice.
What current F-150 Lightning owners should know
Ford says the current Lightning is no longer available to order in its existing form, but the company will continue owner support, including software updates, service access, and replacement-parts support. Ford’s page lists high-voltage battery coverage of eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, subject to warranty terms. What to consider when comparing a current Lightning with the announced successor
The successor’s final specifications, launch timing, pricing, and independent test results have not been announced in the cited official material. A useful comparison should separate confirmed details from expectations:
- Powertrain: The current Lightning is battery-electric; Ford describes the future model as electric-motor propelled with generator-backed extended range.
- Range: Treat the future truck’s 700-plus-mile figure as Ford’s estimate, not as a tested or finalized figure.
- Travel and towing: For a current vehicle, consider charging access and the logistics of longer trips and towing. For the successor, wait for final specifications and independent assessments rather than treating Ford’s future-performance claims as verified results.
- Ownership costs and support: Compare current purchase prices, incentives, operating costs, warranty terms, and service needs using current, vehicle-specific information; the announced EREV does not yet have final specifications or pricing in the cited material.
Ford’s chief EV, digital and design officer Doug Field called the original truck “a groundbreaking product that demonstrated an electric pickup can still be a great F-Series.” Describing the announced successor, Field said it would provide “near instantaneous torque and pure electric driving,” with the generator enabling an estimated range of 700-plus miles.
