Why Ford Discontinued the Barra Inline-Six Engine

Barra production ended with Ford’s Australian Falcon and Territory manufacturing era. Euro 5 upgrade costs were reported as a contributing business pressure, not a proven sole cause.

Ford discontinued the Barra inline-six because its main production home—the Australian Falcon and Territory program—was ending. Emissions compliance added pressure: contemporary reports said upgrading the Geelong-built six for Euro 5 would take significant time and resources, and that Ford considered the investment uneconomical. That cost judgment is reported context, not a verified statement from a Ford decision-maker, and the available evidence does not establish emissions as the sole reason.

Barra production ended with the Australian Falcon program

The Barra was not retired as a standalone engine while its principal vehicle line carried on. Ford’s August 2016 FG X Falcon brochure said Falcon production would end in October 2016. On 7 October, the last saleable Falcon sedan and Territory rolled off Ford’s Broadmeadows line, according to WhichCar’s contemporary report. The end of local vehicle manufacturing is the clearest production trigger for the Barra’s disappearance.

The final Falcon was a Kinetic Blue FG X XR6 fitted with the Australian-developed and manufactured 4.0-litre Barra. Ford’s brochure listed the final range with naturally aspirated, turbocharged and dedicated LPG inline-six variants, alongside a supercharged 5.0-litre V8. The brochure’s stated output for the naturally aspirated six was 195 kW and 391 Nm; these are published specifications, not independent test results.

Euro 5 compliance was a reported cost and engineering pressure

Contemporary reporting described a possible upgrade rather than an engine that could not meet the standard. A 2011 GoAuto report said Ford could upgrade the Geelong-built inline-six to meet Euro 5, but that doing so would require significant time and resources. Later Carsales/Redbook reporting said the October 2016 timing coincided with Australia’s shift from Euro IV to Euro V requirements for new cars and that Ford judged upgrading the locally built 4.0-litre uneconomical: Carsales/Redbook.

That reported investment judgment helps explain why Ford did not continue the engine in a new local vehicle program. It should not be mistaken for a complete account of Ford’s internal decision: the available reporting does not provide a verified executive quote or the full financial case.

What the emissions rules do—and do not—tell us

Australia regulates vehicle emissions through the Australian Design Rules (ADRs). Ford’s current emissions explainer says the present minimum for new light vehicles is ADR 79/04, based on Euro 5. That is useful background on the standards framework, but it does not by itself establish the exact requirements applicable to each Barra model year. The historical timing and upgrade-cost explanation rests on contemporary reporting, not on Ford’s current overview.

What is established, and what remains uncertain

  • Established: Ford planned to end Falcon production in October 2016, and the final Falcon and Territory left Broadmeadows on 7 October.
  • Reported context: Contemporary accounts described Euro 5 compliance as requiring significant upgrade resources and reported that Ford considered the investment uneconomical.
  • Not established: The available sources do not disclose Ford’s complete internal financial reasoning or demonstrate that emissions, labor costs, market share, reliability or customer demand alone caused the decision.

For existing Falcon owners, Ford’s historical support page acknowledges that Falcon production has ended and directs owners to Ford dealers for assistance.
