The Ocean was the company’s central bet, but making a vehicle was only one part of the job: Fisker also had to get it to customers, fix problems, supply parts, and keep the business funded. Its own filings had warned investors about many of those risks before the company filed for Chapter 11.
What does it mean that Fisker was not ready to be a car company?
Fisker pursued a technology-enabled, asset-light model, relying on contract manufacturing and outside suppliers and service providers rather than building every capability in-house. That could reduce the capital required to establish manufacturing, but it did not remove the work of making the whole system function. Fisker still had to integrate hardware and software, coordinate suppliers, control quality, arrange sales and delivery, and support vehicles after customers took them home.

In its 2023 Form 10-K, filed in 2024, Fisker disclosed a limited operating history and warned about supplier dependence, software and technology integration, product quality, distribution, and service. The bankruptcy declaration also described a business built around partners. The interpretation is not that outsourcing doomed Fisker; it is that a lean structure left the company highly dependent on coordination and oversight capabilities that were still being developed.
- Build: align contract manufacturing and supplier deliveries with production plans.
- Integrate: validate vehicle software and technology across components and updates.
- Sell and deliver: establish channels and processes that can reliably turn completed vehicles into customer sales.
- Support: provide service capacity and parts when vehicles need attention.
- Control: maintain the financial, accounting, and public-company systems needed to monitor a fast-moving business.
Why did financing and cash runway matter so much?
Fisker’s 2023 Form 10-K stated, “There is substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern.” The company reported that it used $904.9 million in operating and investing activities during 2023; its cash balance fell from $736.5 million on December 31, 2022, to $325.5 million on December 31, 2023. In the same filing, Fisker reported $53.9 million in unrestricted cash as of April 16, 2024. These are company-reported figures, not independent estimates.

The filing tied continued operations to obtaining additional financing, a possible strategic partnership, and vehicle sales. It also said cash generation depended in part on moving from direct sales toward dealer sales and selling vehicles through that channel. With limited liquidity and debt-service needs, delays or costs in launching, selling, or supporting the Ocean were harder to absorb. The cash figures do not assign a precise share of the collapse to any one problem, but they show why execution setbacks could become existential rather than merely inconvenient.
How did dependence on the Ocean increase the risk?
The Ocean was Fisker’s only vehicle available for purchase and delivery at the time covered by its bankruptcy declaration, making the company dependent on a single model for revenue. The declaration said Fisker had sold more than 6,200 Oceans as of February 2024. That sales count belongs to that date and is a debtor representation in a bankruptcy filing; it should not be read as a measure of later deliveries or the size of a functioning service network.

A single-model launch concentrates risk. Production, software, quality, customer demand, and service all have to work well enough around the same vehicle. If any of those systems falls behind, there is no established second model to diversify sales or keep the organization operating at scale. Fisker’s 10-K had identified that single-model revenue dependence as a risk.

What problems were reported with Ocean quality and customer support?
TechCrunch’s February 9, 2024 reporting described owner complaints and internal documents concerning power loss, braking, key fobs, door handles, and software. It also reported Fisker’s responses, including that some issues had been fixed or reworked, were associated with early vehicles, or had not been validated. In response to a question about whether a regenerative-braking issue persisted after a software update, Fisker told TechCrunch by email: “I’m not aware of any validated case of this issue” persisting after the update.

Those reports are evidence of launch concerns, not proof that every Ocean had the same defect or that every reported complaint was independently confirmed. TechCrunch’s June 18, 2024 article also reported spare-parts shortages and insufficient customer-service staffing, attributing details to employees, documents, and customer accounts. It described a mismatch between the support resources available and the work of addressing customer needs. Fisker disputed some allegations and said some issues had been resolved; reported complaints should therefore be treated as attributed reporting, not adjudicated findings.
Why were sales, delivery, and public-company systems part of the problem?
Building a vehicle does not complete the sale. Fisker’s 10-K described its shift from direct-to-consumer sales to a dealer model and said the company’s ability to produce cash depended on making that transition and selling vehicles. The shift added another operational task at a time when Fisker also needed to coordinate production, customer handoffs, service, and parts.

TechCrunch’s June 2024 reporting described difficulty meeting sales goals and strain in delivery and service. It also reported delays in financial reporting and an accounting issue involving customer payments. Those details are the outlet’s reporting, not findings in the bankruptcy court declaration. Taken together, they suggest Fisker’s organizational capacity was stretched across the full chain of automaking: building vehicles, converting them into sales, delivering them, supporting owners, and tracking the business accurately.
What happened immediately before the bankruptcy filings?
Fisker Group Inc. filed for Chapter 11 on June 17, 2024; other U.S. debtor subsidiaries filed on June 19, according to Fisker Inc.’s Form 8-K filed June 24, 2024. The dates differ by entity, so June 17 is not the filing date for every Fisker subsidiary.

In a declaration filed June 21, 2024, John DiDonato said a critical vendor providing mission-critical software services notified Fisker on June 17 that it planned to terminate its contract the following day. The declaration also described a move toward orderly liquidation after marketing efforts did not produce actionable asset-sale bids, while Fisker pursued a fleet sale. The vendor notice illustrates how exposed the operation was to partner continuity, but the filing does not establish that this event alone caused bankruptcy.
Was Fisker’s collapse caused by the market or by its own execution?
Fisker cited market and macroeconomic headwinds, and those conditions were part of the situation. But the company’s own disclosures also identified acute financing needs and risks involving suppliers, software integration, quality, distribution, and service. Reporting on Ocean complaints and strained customer support adds detail about how those operational pressures appeared to owners and employees.
The evidence supports a convergence rather than a single-cause explanation: a capital-intensive business with little remaining runway, a partner-dependent operating model, a one-model revenue base, and systems for launch, sales, delivery, support, and financial control that were under strain. The available sources do not quantify each factor’s contribution or justify assigning a precise ranking. The core failure was that Fisker needed a complete automaker’s coordination and support capabilities while its finances left little room to build them through setbacks.
