Ferrari and Porsche reportedly declined the film’s placement opportunity over concerns about association with prostitution; Lotus supplied an Esprit instead. The movie gave the car lasting screen recognition, and one later account says Esprit sales tripled—but the available reporting does not establish that the placement alone caused the increase.
What car did Richard Gere drive in Pretty Woman?
Edward Lewis, played by Richard Gere, is associated with a Lotus Esprit SE. A 2025 retrospective in The Spokesman-Review identifies it as a silver “1989½” Esprit SE; a separate Moviefone retrospective also identifies the car as an Esprit. The 1989½ description is the Spokesman-Review’s specification, rather than a detail independently established by both accounts.

The car appears in the film’s recognizable opening sequence. Lotus reportedly supplied it for the production, putting the British sports car in the place Ferrari or Porsche might have occupied.

The Spokesman-Review and Moviefone both recount that Ferrari and Porsche declined the placement opportunity because they did not want their cars associated with prostitution, a central element of the film’s premise. That explanation comes from secondary retrospectives: neither account provides a direct statement from either manufacturer. It is therefore best described as the reported reason, not a confirmed quotation or a documented corporate decision memo.

Lotus reportedly accepted the opportunity and supplied the Esprit. The contrast is striking, but the available accounts do not show that Ferrari or Porsche made a formal financial calculation—or that Lotus evaluated the placement against a specific projected return.
Did Lotus Esprit sales really triple after the film?
The Spokesman-Review reported in 2025 that Esprit sales “triple[d]” after the movie’s release. That is a reported before-and-after claim, not a disclosed sales dataset: the article gives no unit totals, market definition, comparison period, or method for separating the film’s influence from other factors. It supports saying that sales were reported to have tripled after the film, but it does not prove that the placement by itself produced a measured threefold increase.

- Real rubber tires.
- Detailed interior, exterior.
- Die-cast metal body and chassis,
- Dimensions approximately L-2.75 inches long.
That distinction matters when describing whether the placement “paid off.” The film made the Esprit a memorable part of a major movie, and a later retrospective connects the release with a sharp rise in sales. Without the underlying figures or a way to isolate the effect, however, the scale of the commercial impact—and Lotus’s return on investment—cannot be calculated from these accounts.
What the story shows about movie-car placements
A placement can put a vehicle in front of audiences and tie it to a scene people remember long after release. Pretty Woman offers a vivid example: the Esprit became part of the film’s visual identity after two better-known marques reportedly passed. But a memorable appearance and a reported sales increase are not the same as verified proof of causation. To establish a precise commercial payoff, the story would need comparable sales figures and evidence linking the change to the placement.
