The dispute is about how to enforce Formula 1’s 2026 engine compression-ratio limit as temperatures change—not a published finding that a team broke the rules. The FIA kept the 16:1 ceiling but adopted a transition: checks in both hot and cold conditions begin on 1 June 2026; from 2027, checks apply only at an operating condition of 130°C.
What is the compression-ratio rule?
For 2026, the regulations cap the engine compression ratio at 16:1. The FIA said the limit had been measured in cold conditions. The ratio compares the volume in a cylinder when its piston is at the bottom of its stroke with the volume when the piston is at the top.

The disagreement concerns how that limit should be checked when an engine moves from ambient conditions to operating temperature. A cold-condition reading and a reading taken when the engine is hot may differ. Formula 1 reported that the FIA and power-unit manufacturers worked together on a method to quantify that change; the public accounts do not describe the method in enough detail to establish a particular engine’s operating ratio.

In its 28 February 2026 statement, the FIA announced a compromise approved unanimously by e-vote by the World Motor Sport Council. Some aspects of the amendments were also approved unanimously by Formula One Power Unit Manufacturers. The adopted schedule is:
#1 Best Overall
- Authentic Formula 1 Styling – Realistic race-inspired design and proportions
- Authentic Race Car and Driver's Helmet Details
- Collector-Scale Model – 1:24 scale ideal for shelves, desks, and displays. Includes Acrylic Box with Decorative Sleeve
- Authentic Race Car and Driver's Helmet Details for #4 Lando Norris
- Free-Rolling Wheels – Smooth-rolling wheels for display or light play
| Period | Compliance check |
|---|---|
| From 1 June 2026 | Checks in both hot and cold conditions |
| From 2027 onward | Checks only at operating conditions of 130°C |
The two dates mark different stages: dual-condition checks start partway through 2026, while the operating-temperature-only regime begins in 2027. The 130°C figure is the specified condition for the later checks, not a reported measurement of an engine’s compression ratio.
Why did the issue cause consternation?
A limit is difficult to apply consistently if the result depends on whether the engine is measured cold or at operating temperature. Adding a hot-condition check addresses that measurement question, while the transition period gives teams time before the 2027 regime takes effect. The FIA described compression ratio as one of the fundamental targets of the 2026 rules, which were intended to attract new manufacturers.

- Perfect for Collectors & Kids – Great gift for automotive fans
Formula 1’s 18 February 2026 account described an earlier proposal: compliance would have to be shown at ambient conditions and at a representative operating temperature of 130°C from 1 August 2026. That was a proposal still subject to a vote and final World Motor Sport Council approval. The FIA’s later 28 February announcement sets out the adopted dates instead: 1 June 2026 for hot-and-cold checks, followed by operating-condition checks from 2027.
What the public statements do—and do not—establish
The FIA’s statement establishes the limit and the revised checking schedule. The cited public accounts do not identify a manufacturer or team using a particular engine design, confirm that any engine exceeded the limit while running, declare an engine illegal, or quantify a performance advantage. Those claims should not be treated as FIA findings without a specific ruling or attributable statement supporting them.

- Authentic Race Car and Driver's Helmet Details
- Acrylic Box with Decorative Sleeve
- 2025 Season Car
The FIA also said that “Further evaluation and technical checks on energy management matters are ongoing.” That note concerns energy management and is not evidence about compression-ratio compliance.
