Tesla’s “Ludicrous” and “Plaid” names are jokes borrowed from Spaceballs, the 1987 science-fiction comedy. The film’s speed gag escalates from “Ludicrous” to “Plaid”; Tesla attached the joke to real performance modes and, later, a high-performance vehicle designation.
What does Spaceballs have to do with Tesla?
In a 2015 GQ interview, Elon Musk explained that Tesla chose “Ludicrous” because the car seemed ludicrously fast and he liked the movie. The word was both a description of the car’s acceleration and a pop-culture reference.
Spaceballs turns a spaceship’s speed controls into a comic escalation: after “Ludicrous” comes “Plaid,” accompanied by a plaid-like visual effect. When Tesla introduced the Model S Plaid in 2021, Musk invoked the connection at its delivery event, saying the product plan was “basically” taken from the movie. The Washington Post’s coverage of the Plaid launch also explains the film reference.
What do the names mean on a Tesla?
The joke is not a technical standard, and “Plaid” does not refer to a fabric option. Tesla uses the names for actual performance features and products, but their meanings differ.

| Name | How Tesla uses it | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Ludicrous | Historical Model S acceleration mode | An acceleration upgrade for certain Performance all-wheel-drive vehicles; availability depended on vehicle configuration and manufacture date. |
| Plaid | Vehicle designation and, on equipped performance vehicles, an acceleration setting | “Model S Plaid” identifies a high-performance trim and powertrain. In the current Model S manual, “Plaid” is also the name used for the maximum immediately available acceleration setting on performance vehicles, if equipped. |
| Plaid Track Mode | Separate track-focused feature | Changes vehicle systems for closed-circuit driving; it is not simply another name for the acceleration setting. |
How Ludicrous worked
Tesla’s historical Model S owner’s manual covering 2012–2020 vehicles describes Ludicrous as an option for Performance all-wheel-drive cars equipped with the Ludicrous upgrade. It says the setting increased peak torque by approximately 60%, compared with approximately 30% for Insane. Those are specifications from that historical manual, not claims about current vehicles.
The same manual notes that settings and availability depended on the car’s manufacture date and options. Ludicrous should therefore be understood as a feature associated with certain earlier Model S configurations, not a setting present on every Tesla.

How Plaid is used today
Plaid as a trim and powertrain
Tesla uses Plaid as a vehicle designation, as in Model S Plaid. The Model S product page lists Plaid as a distinct trim. Tesla’s 2022 Track Mode announcement describes its Plaid platform as tri-motor.
Plaid as an acceleration setting
In Tesla’s current Model S owner’s manual, “Insane (Plaid on performance vehicles, if equipped)” is identified as providing the maximum immediately available acceleration. Tesla cautions that using increased torque and power can reduce range and efficiency. Equipment and software can vary, so the manual for a particular vehicle is the best guide to its available settings.

Plaid Track Mode
Track Mode is a separate feature intended for closed-circuit driving. Tesla says it adjusts stability control, traction control, regenerative braking and cooling to support track performance and handling. It should not be confused with the Plaid acceleration setting or treated as a normal public-road mode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why keep the joke in the product names?
The names make Tesla’s performance branding memorable while nodding to the movie’s deliberately over-the-top speed joke. The film reference explains the naming; it does not, by itself, establish how fast a particular vehicle is. Tesla’s performance figures describe vehicle specifications, not the reason for choosing “Ludicrous” or “Plaid.”
