F1 tyres lose performance when they slide, overheat or operate outside their useful temperature range. That loss is called degradation, but it is not the same thing as rubber physically wearing away: surface damage such as graining and heat-related loss of grip can also slow a tyre. Which problem dominates—and how quickly it develops—depends on the circuit, conditions, car setup and driving.
What does tyre degradation mean in F1?
Degradation is a decline in tyre performance, usually felt as reduced grip and slower lap times. Physical wear is the loss of rubber; it can occur alongside performance loss, but the two terms are not interchangeable. Formula 1’s F1 glossary uses degradation to describe a loss of tyre performance over time.
Teams and commentators may also describe tyres as overheating or graining. These are different problems that can contribute to degradation, not synonyms for it. A tyre can lose pace because its surface has been damaged or its temperature is hurting grip, even when physical wear is not the main issue.
Why do F1 tyres lose grip?
Graining breaks up the surface
Graining occurs when stress causes the compound at the tyre surface to break up, producing microcracks and an irregular surface. The resulting peaks and troughs reduce grip. Pirelli Motorsport Chief Engineer Simone Berra describes graining as a surface phenomenon and says it is most common in low track temperatures or when tyres are outside their operating window. Circuit layout, driving style and setup also influence it. Pirelli’s explanation of graining distinguishes this surface damage from the broader question of tyre performance.

Sliding can drive thermal degradation
When a tyre slides, it generates heat. If the tyre becomes too hot, performance can fall; sliding and heat can reinforce one another, as reduced grip makes it harder for the driver to keep the car settled. Hot ambient conditions and a circuit that gives the tyres little opportunity to cool can add to the problem. At the 2025 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Pirelli noted that the circuit offered tyres little chance to “breathe,” while Mercedes reported overheating and lost pace in the hot conditions. The event-day team report illustrates how thermal performance can constrain a stint.
Wear depends on the circuit’s demands
Track-surface roughness and the energy demanded by corners, braking and acceleration affect how hard each tyre works. Those demands do not act the same way at every venue: braking and acceleration can load the rear axle heavily, while a smooth, low-abrasion surface may produce less wear. Pirelli’s assessments of the Red Bull Ring and Baku show why circuit-specific conditions matter more than a single rule about which tracks “eat” tyres.

Why does the rate change from one Grand Prix to another?
There is no single general F1 tyre-degradation rate established by the available event reports. Surface abrasion and grip, track and ambient temperature, cornering and traction demands, the axle under greatest stress, and the dominant failure mechanism all change the outcome. Even a low-grip surface can create a surprising result: extra sliding may generate more heat, while a compound with more grip may reduce sliding.

What can teams do to manage tyre degradation?
Set up the car for the event
Teams tune setup within the applicable event limits. Pressure affects contact area, grip and the risk of excessive deformation; teams must respect Pirelli’s minimum starting pressure. Camber influences handling and performance, while also changing tyre stresses. Pirelli issues circuit-specific camber values, so a pressure or camber figure from an older event should not be treated as a universal current rule. Manage the driver’s pace over a stint
Drivers and engineers adjust how hard they work the tyres. If overheating limits pace, easing the push can help manage the problem; graining management is also part of race strategy. The aim is not simply to drive as slowly as possible: a gentler pace costs lap time, and the useful balance depends on the grip available and how the tyre is responding.
Choose compounds and pit timing for the actual conditions
Strategy weighs compound choice, tyre age, pace and the time cost of a pit stop. A harder compound or a longer stint is not automatically the better option, just as a softer compound is not automatically faster over a race distance. The trade-off depends on temperature, track evolution, traffic and whether the main concern is heat, surface damage or wear. Pirelli’s event-specific previews show why teams assess the conditions of each weekend rather than apply one fixed strategy.

What should you take away from a tyre-degradation comparison?
When comparing two circuits, ask what kind of performance loss is being discussed before comparing how “quickly” tyres degrade:
- How abrasive is the track surface, and how much grip does it offer?
- What are the track and ambient temperatures?
- How demanding are the corners, braking zones and traction phases?
- Which axle is under the greatest stress?
- Is the likely issue graining, thermal performance loss or physical wear?
- How might that issue change stint length or the pit-stop decision?
Those distinctions matter because the same symptom—slower laps—can have different causes, and teams cannot manage every cause in the same way.
