Why Ricciardo’s interview sounded like a goodbye
Before the race, Ricciardo’s short-term future was already a subject of public questions. He was asked about speculation during the Singapore weekend, and the FIA’s Thursday press conference transcript shows that his future was being raised before he took the start. That uncertainty gave his post-race words their weight. In Formula 1’s report, Ricciardo said, “I have to be prepared for this being it.” The report described him as at peace with the possibility that Singapore had been his final Grand Prix. Ricciardo finished P18 and set the race’s fastest lap, according to Formula 1’s post-race coverage. The fastest lap did not change his finishing position or earn him a championship point. After the race, he stayed with the car and spoke emotionally about the chance that he had just made his final F1 appearance.

The interview captured uncertainty, not a confirmed departure. After Singapore, Formula 1 reported that Liam Lawson would take Ricciardo’s seat for the remaining six races of the 2024 season. Later Formula 1 coverage described Singapore as the end of Ricciardo’s F1 career. Formula 1’s report on the driver change places that decision after the interview.
