Why Carmakers Envy Tesla’s Whole-Car OTA

Tesla’s whole-car OTA advantage comes from designing vehicle electronics for remote updates from the outset. Stellantis and GM are pursuing broader systems, but announced plans and fleet statistics do not mean every model can update every ECU.

Tesla’s edge in whole-car over-the-air (OTA) updates is architectural: its vehicle software system was designed to deliver updates beyond infotainment, down to individual electronic control units (ECUs). Most traditional automakers started with narrower OTA capabilities and have had to extend them across vehicles built with more fragmented electronics. That makes updating the whole car a harder engineering and organizational problem—not simply a matter of adding a wireless connection.

What does whole-car OTA mean?

A car is controlled by many ECUs: small computers responsible for particular functions. An infotainment update may change the screen, navigation or media software. Whole-car OTA means software updates can reach a broader set of vehicle systems, potentially including safety, powertrain, battery and body functions as well as infotainment.

EE Times described Tesla as able to send software patches directly to individual ECUs for safety, security and feature upgrades. That is a broader ambition than updating maps or a connected-media interface. It does not mean every ECU in every model can be changed remotely, or that every update changes a safety-critical function; the scope depends on the vehicle and the particular update.

Why is Tesla’s architecture easier to update?

OTA was part of the design, not an add-on

Tesla introduced OTA updates in 2012. IHS Markit’s Egil Juliussen described the distinction to EE Times: “Tesla is one exception. Its system architecture is built from the ground up to make OTA easier.” If the vehicle’s electronics and software are designed with remote delivery in mind, updates can be planned around those systems from the outset.

Legacy vehicles have more integration work

Many established automakers developed vehicle electronics over time, with different ECUs, networks and software responsibilities. Adding whole-car OTA means coordinating updates across that installed complexity, rather than treating the car like a single device. A patch must be appropriate for the relevant hardware and vehicle configuration, arrive securely, install in a safe state and leave a usable recovery path if something goes wrong.

EE Times identified network topology, connectivity and rollback states among the challenges. OTA also needs enough persistent connectivity, storage and computing headroom, plus testing across vehicle variants. A wireless delivery mechanism alone does not solve those problems.

Physical complexity is part of the software problem

Tesla said in 2024 that automotive electronics complexity had doubled over 20 years and a typical vehicle required more than 200 connections. Its Low-Voltage Connector Standard reduces connector types to six and is designed to cover more than 90% of typical electrical-device applications. Those figures describe Tesla’s stated rationale and design target; they are not an independent measure of OTA performance. They illustrate why simplifying vehicle hardware can matter to software integration, too.

How do Tesla, Stellantis and GM compare?

The available figures describe different things—update events, vehicles capable of receiving OTA, and vehicles that actually received updates—so they should not be read as a league table. They do show the difference between Tesla’s established approach and competitors’ reported scale or announced architectures.

Automaker Update scope and architecture Reported fleet or update figures What the evidence establishes
Tesla EE Times reported OTA patches delivered directly to individual ECUs; its system was designed for OTA from the ground up. Jean-Marie Lapeyre, Capgemini’s CTO for automotive, told WIRED in 2025 that Tesla once issued 42 updates within six months. A comparable total for OTA-capable Tesla vehicles is not stated by WIRED. Evidence of a broad OTA approach and a historical example of high update frequency, not a claim that every Tesla gets 42 updates in every six-month period.
Stellantis Stellantis says its planned STLA Brain centralized architecture provides full OTA access to sensors and actuators. Stellantis reported more than 94 million OTA updates delivered in 2023; 13.8 million monetizable connected vehicles and more than 5 million subscription users that year. The update total is update deliveries, not unique vehicles. STLA Brain’s integration readiness and vehicle-integration dates were announced targets, not proof that every Stellantis model has the planned capability.
General Motors GM describes a next platform with a unified compute core connecting propulsion, steering, braking, infotainment and safety. GM said in 2025 that more than 4.5 million vehicles were OTA-capable, with that number growing by about 2 million per year; 1.6 million vehicles received coordinated software updates in 2024. GM planned to start the next platform with the Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028. That announced rollout does not establish that the current GM fleet already shares the future platform’s scope.

Why update frequency is not a simple contest

WIRED quoted Lapeyre contrasting Tesla’s one-time example of 42 updates in six months with many automakers updating about once a year. That comparison signals a difference in cadence, but it is not a standardized count across equivalent vehicles or update types. An update may be small or substantial, optional or necessary; frequency by itself says little about usefulness, reliability or safety.

What are Stellantis and GM trying to change?

Stellantis: centralize computing and separate software cycles

In 2021, Stellantis forecast approximately €20 billion in incremental annual software-enabled revenue by 2030, announced more than €30 billion of investment through 2025, and projected 34 million monetizable connected cars by 2030. These were company plans and forecasts made in 2021, not evidence that the revenue or fleet targets were subsequently achieved.

Stellantis positioned STLA Brain as a centralized architecture to give OTA access to sensors and actuators across its vehicle platforms. CEO Carlos Tavares said the planned technology platforms would “leverage the speed and agility associated with the de-coupling of hardware and software cycles.” The company targeted integration readiness for the end of 2024 and vehicle integration in 2025. Those dates have passed; the cited plan alone does not verify how broadly or when the architecture entered production.

In 2024, Stellantis reported more than 94 million OTA updates delivered in 2023, alongside the connected-vehicle and subscription-user totals in the table. Chief Software Officer Yves Bonnefont said the company had shifted toward “operating much more like a startup company,” emphasizing speed and in-house software capabilities. The figures show a substantial connected-services operation, but do not by themselves establish that all those updates reached powertrain, braking or battery ECUs.

GM: unify more systems on a future platform

GM’s 2025 description of its next platform links propulsion, steering, braking, infotainment and safety through a unified compute core. The company planned to begin the rollout with the Cadillac Escalade IQ in 2028. This is a stated future platform plan, distinct from GM’s reported existing OTA-capable fleet and its 2024 coordinated updates. It should not be treated as evidence that every GM model can currently receive the same system-level updates.

Why does whole-car OTA matter to automakers?

It can support product improvements after delivery

Remote software changes can let a manufacturer deliver software upgrades without requiring a workshop visit for every change. The reach and circumstances vary: an infotainment feature is not the same as changing control software for a vehicle system. OTA capability also does not guarantee that updates will be frequent, valuable or risk-free.

It can create recurring revenue

Connected subscriptions and feature unlocks make OTA part of a business model as well as a technical capability. Stellantis’s 2021 revenue forecast and its reported 2023 subscription users show how the company framed that opportunity. A connected fleet is not automatically a paying one, and the existence of remote delivery does not mean every feature is sold by subscription.

It changes how automakers organize software work

Centralized computing and greater separation between hardware and software development can make it easier to develop and deploy changes across a vehicle range. That is the strategic aim behind the Stellantis and GM plans, but architecture announcements and fleet totals are not interchangeable with proof of update scope on each production vehicle.

Can OTA update braking, powertrain and battery software?

Some OTA systems are designed to reach vehicle-control ECUs, not just infotainment. EE Times’ description of Tesla’s ECU-level patches and Stellantis’s stated STLA Brain access to sensors and actuators point to that broader scope. GM has described a future platform connecting propulsion, steering, braking, infotainment and safety.

Those claims do not mean every vehicle from those manufacturers can remotely update every one of those systems today. OTA capability is model-, platform- and update-specific. Nor does delivery over the air remove the need for validation: changes to safety-related or powertrain software require careful compatibility checks, secure delivery and a recovery strategy.

Who supplies the OTA ecosystem?

EE Times names Wind River, Excelfore, Aptiv/Movimento, HERE OTA Connect, Bosch, Continental, Airbiquity and ATS as participants in the automotive OTA ecosystem. These are examples of companies involved in OTA-related technology; the list does not establish which supplier serves a particular automaker or vehicle program.

What to check when a car is described as “OTA-capable”

  • Scope: Does the claim cover infotainment only, or named vehicle systems and ECUs?
  • Deployment: Is the capability in a production vehicle, limited to a particular platform or described as a future plan?
  • Evidence: Does the number refer to vehicles capable of receiving updates, vehicles updated, update events or paying subscribers?
  • Safety and recovery: What are the update’s compatibility, installation and rollback provisions? A general OTA claim alone does not answer those questions.
  • Value: Is the update a repair, a no-cost improvement or a paid feature unlock? Delivery capability does not tell you whether an update is useful or whether access recurs as a subscription.

Is the software-defined car becoming a subscription on wheels?

It can become one, but OTA and subscriptions are separate things. OTA is the delivery channel; a subscription is a way to charge for an ongoing service or feature. Stellantis’s connected-car forecasts and reported subscription users show why manufacturers see recurring software revenue as a major opportunity. For drivers, the practical distinction is whether a capability is included with the car, unlocked once, or available only while a subscription remains active.

Tesla’s advantage is not that legacy automakers cannot update cars remotely. Stellantis and GM have built sizable OTA efforts and are pursuing architectures intended to reach more vehicle systems. The gap is that Tesla treated OTA as a foundational vehicle architecture early, while competitors are extending or replacing systems designed under different constraints. Fleet size, update counts and future platform plans each measure only part of that transition.
