Physical buttons are back in focus because drivers and safety assessors are questioning whether important controls belong behind touchscreen menus. Euro NCAP’s 2026 safety-rating protocol will assess the placement, clarity and ease of use of essential controls, including the availability of physical buttons for commonly used functions. That creates an incentive for carmakers to make key controls easier to find and operate; it does not make buttons a legal requirement.
Why are carmakers giving physical buttons more attention?
Two forces are converging: concerns about distraction and a new consumer safety-rating assessment. Euro NCAP says its revised protocol, announced on 26 November 2025 and taking effect in 2026, introduces an assessment of the human–machine interface (HMI). It will consider the placement, clarity and ease of use of essential controls, including whether commonly used functions have physical buttons. This does not establish that every automaker has already reversed a touchscreen-first design, nor does it verify particular models that have done so. The grounded point is that key controls have become a more visible part of the safety-rating conversation, giving manufacturers a reason to consider how drivers operate them.
What changes in Euro NCAP’s 2026 assessment?
Euro NCAP is a consumer safety assessment and rating programme, not a law requiring a particular cabin layout. Its 2026 protocol organizes testing into four stages: Safe Driving, Crash Avoidance, Crash Protection and Post-Crash Safety. Stage thresholds contribute to the overall star rating, so HMI is one consideration within a broader assessment—not a stand-alone route to a high rating. Euro NCAP’s announcement

The focus is on essential, commonly used controls, not every function in the cabin. Euro NCAP’s announcement describes the HMI assessment in general terms. ADAC, describing direct physical-input criteria, names indicators, hazard lights, the horn, windscreen wipers and eCall. ADAC says other functions should be reachable in one or two submenu steps. For exact scoring provisions, Euro NCAP’s technical document index lists the current General Vehicle Controls procedure, assessment sheet and guidance.
What does ADAC’s control-usability data show?
In a 28 January 2026 analysis of its vehicle tests, German motoring organization ADAC reported that its average vehicle-control test grade changed from 2.3 in 2019 to 2.7 in 2025; the worst result changed from 3.2 to 4.0. ADAC does not provide a sample count in the material accompanying these figures. These are grades from ADAC’s assessments—not crash figures, percentages or a universal estimate of risk.

ADAC links the trend to software-driven interfaces, nested touchscreen menus and controls without tactile feedback. It reports that, in vehicles operated predominantly by touchscreen, operating tasks take longer and drivers must concentrate more to find functions or avoid incorrect operation. Are physical buttons safer than touchscreens?
Neither input method is automatically safe or unsafe. A physical control can be easier to locate by touch, but poor placement or unclear labeling can still make it difficult to use. A touchscreen can consolidate functions, yet a driver may need to look for a control or navigate menus. Euro NCAP’s stated assessment reflects that distinction: it considers placement, clarity and ease of use, as well as availability of physical buttons.

The practical question is whether a driver can identify and operate an important control with little visual searching or menu navigation. ADAC’s results support concern about touchscreen-heavy layouts in its tests, but do not establish a universal comparison across all vehicles or interfaces.
Does Euro NCAP require physical buttons in 2026?
No. The protocol assesses vehicles for a consumer safety rating; it is not itself a government law mandating buttons. The assessment can influence design through rating incentives, but the available evidence does not establish a universal legal requirement to provide a physical button for every function. Nor do physical buttons alone determine a vehicle’s overall Euro NCAP rating.

What should drivers check when comparing cabin controls?
When comparing vehicles, focus on the controls you may need while driving rather than counting buttons. Check whether essential functions are direct physical inputs or touchscreen actions, whether controls are easy to locate and understand, whether they provide tactile feedback, and how many menu steps it takes to reach other functions. Also check the vehicle’s market, model year and applicable Euro NCAP rating protocol: a rating or interface assessment is meaningful only in its specific context.
