The usual fix is to reset the pairing on both the phone and the car, then pair again from the vehicle’s actual “Add New Device” screen. But first determine whether the problem is discovery, pairing, automatic reconnection, calls, music, Apple CarPlay, or Android Auto. Those are different connection paths with different fixes.
Perform every pairing and troubleshooting step while parked. Never change Bluetooth or infotainment settings while driving.

Most car Bluetooth failures are caused by the wrong connection mode, a full or confused device list, incomplete permissions, or a mismatch between ordinary Bluetooth and CarPlay/Android Auto. The fix is usually to identify exactly where the connection fails, put the vehicle into pairing mode, remove the old pairing from both sides, and pair again while parked. If the car connects for calls but not music, that may be a feature limitation rather than a fault.

First, identify what “Bluetooth won’t connect” means
There are several different problems hiding behind the same complaint:
- The car does not appear on the phone: the vehicle may not be in discoverable or device-registration mode.
- The car appears, but pairing fails: the PIN was not confirmed, the device list is full, or an old pairing is corrupted.
- The phone says it is connected, but calls do not work: the phone-audio or hands-free profile may be disabled or unsupported.
- Calls work, but music does not: media audio may be disabled, or the vehicle may support hands-free calling without Bluetooth music.
- The phone paired previously but will not reconnect: another registered phone may have priority, or the car and phone may be remembering incompatible connection information.
- Bluetooth works, but CarPlay or Android Auto does not: those systems have separate compatibility, cable, Wi-Fi, software, and vehicle requirements.
Before changing settings, note the phone platform, vehicle make, model, model year, factory or aftermarket stereo, and whether you are trying to use ordinary Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, or Android Auto. Bluetooth features vary by vehicle and infotainment generation. Google specifically notes that not every car supports Bluetooth music or Bluetooth calls.
How to fix Bluetooth that will not connect to your car
1. Park, start the vehicle, and open the car’s pairing screen
Turn the vehicle on and leave the infotainment system powered up. Then open the vehicle’s device-management menu. Depending on the make and infotainment generation, the path may be labeled:
- Phone
- Bluetooth
- Device Connections
- Connections
- Add New Device
- Pair New Device
- Register Device
Select the option that makes the car available for a new device. Merely turning on the ignition often does not make the vehicle discoverable.
Do not assume the phone must initiate the process. Some vehicles expect you to start pairing from the phone; others require you to select Add New on the vehicle display first. Google recommends checking the car’s owner’s manual because the pairing direction varies by system. Hyundai’s troubleshooting guidance likewise directs owners to activate device-registration mode when the system is not detected, while Toyota’s instructions require adding a new Bluetooth device from the multimedia system.
2. Turn Bluetooth off and back on, then restart the phone
On the phone, switch Bluetooth off, wait several seconds, and switch it back on. Restart the phone afterward. Apple specifically recommends turning Bluetooth off for about five seconds before turning it on again as part of its car-connection troubleshooting.
Keep the phone close to the infotainment display while pairing. Apple gives an approximate Bluetooth range of 33 feet (10 meters), but a phone sitting in the vehicle is less likely to encounter range or interference problems than one left in a bag or outside the car.

3. Forget the car on the phone
A fresh pairing is often more effective than repeatedly selecting a saved connection.

On an iPhone
- Open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Find the vehicle in the list of devices.
- Tap the i information button.
- Tap Forget This Device, then confirm.
On Android
- Open Settings > Connected devices or Connections > Bluetooth. The exact label varies by phone manufacturer and Android version.
- Open the saved or paired-device list.
- Tap the settings icon beside the car.
- Choose Forget, Unpair, or Remove.
Google recommends removing unused saved devices and forgetting the previously paired car before trying again. Removing the phone from the phone alone is not enough if the car still has the old record.
4. Delete the phone from the car’s Bluetooth memory
Open the car’s Bluetooth, Phone, or Device Management screen and delete the old phone. Also remove phones belonging to former owners or other drivers if they are no longer needed.
Vehicle systems may have a device limit, a primary-phone setting, or a connection-priority list. The car may be automatically trying to connect to another driver’s phone instead of the one in your hand. Toyota documentation describes primary-device and connection-priority behavior on some systems, and different vehicles support different numbers of saved or simultaneously connected devices.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
After deleting the old entry, turn the vehicle off and restart the infotainment system if the owner’s manual provides a restart procedure. Do not guess at a hidden button combination or disconnect the vehicle battery unless the manufacturer specifically instructs you to do so.
5. Pair again and accept every required prompt
- Put the vehicle in Add New Device or equivalent pairing mode.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and select the vehicle name.
- Compare the PIN or passkey shown on both screens.
- Confirm the match on the phone and the vehicle.
- Accept the prompts for contacts, call history, notifications, phone calls, and media when those features are wanted.
Do not rely on a universal passcode such as 0000 or 1234. Modern systems generally display a PIN that must match on both screens. If the numbers do not match, cancel the attempt and start over.
On Android, Google documents the need to confirm the matching PIN and approve contact and call-history access for hands-free functions. Toyota’s pairing instructions also describe matching the displayed PINs and enabling notification access when desired. A pairing can technically complete while contacts, messages, or notifications remain unavailable because those permissions were declined.
Connected for calls but not music? Check Bluetooth profiles
Pairing and feature availability are separate issues. A car can establish a Bluetooth connection for hands-free calls without supporting Bluetooth music, or it may route music through CarPlay or Android Auto instead.
On Android, verify Phone audio and Media audio
- Open Settings.
- Go to the saved Bluetooth devices or Connected devices list.
- Tap the settings icon beside the car.
- Make sure Phone audio is enabled for calls.
- Make sure Media audio is enabled for music and other audio.
If Media audio is missing, cannot be enabled, or immediately switches off, the vehicle may not support Bluetooth music. Google notes that Bluetooth calling and music support are not universal across cars.

On iPhone, check whether CarPlay is the intended connection
If the vehicle supports CarPlay, ordinary Bluetooth may not be the complete setup you need. For wireless CarPlay, Apple says the vehicle should be in its wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode, and Wi-Fi may also need to be enabled. The exact process depends on the vehicle.
For a CarPlay problem, follow the vehicle’s CarPlay instructions rather than repeatedly forgetting the car under ordinary Bluetooth. Apple also recommends updating the iPhone and checking for the latest stereo firmware from the vehicle or head-unit manufacturer.
Temporarily disconnect other phones and Bluetooth devices
Turn off or disconnect nearby devices while pairing, especially:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- another driver’s phone;
- wireless earbuds or headphones;
- a smartwatch;
- another phone previously used in the vehicle.
Some cars automatically connect the primary or highest-priority registered phone. Remove unused devices from the car or change the connection priority according to the owner’s manual.
If several phones have been used with an iPhone’s car stereo, Apple recommends renaming the iPhone and trying again. On an iPhone, this is under Settings > General > About > Name. Use a short, distinctive name without unusual symbols.
Android Auto is not the same as ordinary Bluetooth
Android Auto has its own compatibility requirements and should be troubleshot separately.
Wireless Android Auto
Wireless Android Auto uses Bluetooth during first-time setup, but it also requires Wi-Fi and Location Services to remain enabled during setup. Google says the vehicle must support wireless Android Auto, the infotainment system must be on, and the vehicle should be in Park.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIf wireless setup fails:
- Confirm that the vehicle—not just the phone—is compatible with wireless Android Auto.
- Put the car in Park and turn on the infotainment system.
- Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on the phone.
- Remove the old car entry from Android Auto and the phone’s Bluetooth list.
- Delete the phone from the vehicle’s device list.
- Restart the phone and vehicle, then begin setup from the car’s pairing screen if the manual requires it.
Wired Android Auto
A wired Android Auto failure is not necessarily a Bluetooth problem. Google warns that USB cable compatibility varies by vehicle and recommends checking the vehicle’s compatibility, enabling Android Auto in the infotainment system, restarting the car receiver, and checking firmware for aftermarket receivers.

If the issue is specifically wired Android Auto, a quality USB cable for wired Android Auto may be relevant. It is not a repair for failed ordinary Bluetooth, and buying a cable will not make an incompatible vehicle support Android Auto.
Update the phone and the vehicle system
Install available phone updates, then check the vehicle manufacturer’s support site and owner’s manual for infotainment firmware. Apple includes both phone updates and stereo-firmware checks in its car-connection guidance. Google recommends using the latest Android version for Android Auto and directs owners to the vehicle manufacturer for compatibility and receiver-firmware support.
Do not assume that a newer Bluetooth version on the phone guarantees compatibility. Bluetooth profiles, software, manufacturer implementation, and the vehicle’s supported features matter more than the version number alone.

Some infotainment systems include a Bluetooth reset or restore option. Hyundai manuals document a Bluetooth reset on equipped systems, but menu names and consequences vary by model. Use the exact owner’s manual for your vehicle.
A reset may erase saved phones, contacts, connection priorities, and other settings. It is different from simply deleting one phone. On Android, a broader network or Bluetooth reset is an advanced step: it can remove saved Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections, so use it only after forgetting the car, restarting both devices, and pairing again have failed.
Find out whether the phone or the car is at fault
Cross-testing is more useful than repeatedly toggling Bluetooth:
- Pair the phone with another Bluetooth device, such as headphones or a portable speaker.
- If possible, try a different phone with the car.
- Test whether the car can discover any phone while in its new-device mode.
| Test result | More likely explanation |
|---|---|
| Your phone pairs normally with other devices, but no phone can pair with the car | The vehicle’s pairing memory, infotainment software, Bluetooth module, or head unit may be at fault. |
| Another phone works with the car, but your phone does not | The problem is more likely phone settings, permissions, saved pairing data, or phone-specific compatibility. |
| The phone pairs, but only calls or only music work | A disabled profile or vehicle feature limitation is more likely than a failed Bluetooth radio. |
| Bluetooth works but Android Auto or CarPlay does not | Check the separate compatibility, cable, Wi-Fi, software, and firmware requirements. |
If several phones fail only with one vehicle, contact the vehicle manufacturer, an authorized dealer, or a qualified car-audio technician. A failed factory Bluetooth module cannot reliably be repaired by a generic phone app or adapter.
Fallback options when the factory Bluetooth is missing or broken
Accessories can provide a workaround when the vehicle has no usable built-in Bluetooth. They do not repair the factory module, restore manufacturer-integrated controls, or guarantee compatibility with every car.

| Fallback | Best for | Requirements and limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth FM transmitter for car | A vehicle with a working FM radio but no usable Bluetooth | Requires an available FM frequency and a working 12-volt power outlet. Audio may be affected by radio interference, and integration is less seamless than factory Bluetooth. |
| Bluetooth AUX receiver for car | A vehicle with a working 3.5-mm AUX input | Requires an AUX input. Call support, microphone quality, charging, and control features vary by receiver. |
| Bluetooth hands-free car kit | Older vehicles where hands-free calling matters more than integrated music control | It is a separate accessory and may use its own speaker or FM connection. |
| Bluetooth replacement car stereo/head unit | A vehicle with obsolete or defective factory infotainment | Fitment, wiring, steering-wheel controls, backup-camera integration, and installation are vehicle-specific and can make this a substantially more expensive remedy. |
| Vehicle-specific Bluetooth adapter | A compatible factory interface or adapter system | Compatibility must be checked precisely. For example, a YATOUR YT-BTM adapter is limited to particular YATOUR M05, M06, and M07 systems; it is not a universal car Bluetooth adapter. |
When an FM transmitter makes sense
A Bluetooth FM transmitter for car receives audio from the phone and rebroadcasts it to the vehicle’s FM stereo. Many products in this category also offer hands-free calling and USB charging. Choose this route only if the car’s FM radio works, a suitable 12-volt outlet is available, and some loss of factory integration is acceptable. It will not fix a broken factory Bluetooth system.
When AUX is the better workaround
A Bluetooth AUX receiver is usually preferable to an FM transmitter when the car has a working 3.5-mm auxiliary input. It avoids FM interference, but the receiver still needs power or a charged battery, and not every model handles calls as well as music. Confirm that the receiver includes the microphone and controls you need.
When replacement hardware is justified
Consider a replacement head unit or professional car-audio installation when the infotainment system cannot pair with multiple known-good phones, repeatedly loses connections, or has other hardware failures. Verify vehicle fitment before purchase, including dashboard dimensions, wiring harnesses, steering-wheel controls, factory amplifiers, cameras, and USB ports.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my car Bluetooth not showing up on my phone?
Usually, the car is not actually in new-device or discoverable mode, the vehicle’s saved-device list is full, or an old pairing is corrupted. Put the car in Add New Device mode, forget the car on the phone, delete it from the car, restart both systems, and pair again.
Why does Bluetooth connect for calls but not music?
Yes. A vehicle may support Bluetooth hands-free calling but not Bluetooth music, or it may route music through Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. On Android, check that both Phone audio and Media audio are enabled for the car.
Is Android Auto or CarPlay the same as Bluetooth?
No. Android Auto and CarPlay have separate compatibility and connection requirements. Wireless Android Auto also uses Wi-Fi and Location Services during setup, while wired Android Auto depends on a compatible USB cable and vehicle support.
What can I use if my car has no working Bluetooth?
An FM transmitter is a workaround for a car with a working FM radio and 12-volt outlet. It does not repair the factory Bluetooth module and can be affected by radio interference. An AUX receiver is often cleaner if the vehicle has a working 3.5-mm AUX input.
The Bottom Line
If your car Bluetooth will not connect, do not start with a random adapter or a universal passcode. Put the vehicle into its actual pairing mode, forget the old connection on both the phone and car, pair again with the correct PIN and permissions, and then check whether the vehicle supports the specific call, music, CarPlay, or Android Auto feature you want. If multiple phones fail, the car’s infotainment hardware or software is the more likely problem.
