Why BYD Is Getting Into Shipping: The EV Export Strategy Explained

BYD is building dedicated roll-on/roll-off vehicle carriers to control more of the route from Chinese factories to overseas EV buyers. Here is why the shipping strategy matters—and what it does not mean.

The Chinese automaker is building a dedicated fleet of roll-on/roll-off vehicle carriers to move its own cars from factories to overseas markets. That gives BYD more control over export schedules and capacity at a time when Chinese electric-vehicle exports are growing faster than the supply of suitable car-carrying ships.

The strategy is best understood as vertical integration. BYD already operates across vehicles, batteries, buses, trucks, energy storage and other transportation businesses. Dedicated ships extend that control one step farther downstream: from manufacturing and port operations to the ocean route connecting Chinese factories with foreign distributors and buyers.

What BYD has actually built

BYD’s first dedicated vehicle carrier, EXPLORER NO.1, was delivered and began its inaugural voyage in January 2024. BYD described the ship as 199.9 meters long, capable of carrying up to 7,000 standard vehicles, and equipped with LNG dual-fuel propulsion. The company said seven additional roll-on/roll-off ships were expected to enter service within two years.

EXPLORER NO.1 quickly demonstrated the intended use of the fleet. BYD said its voyage from China to Brazil took 27 days. When the vessel reached Brazil’s Port of Suape, it carried 5,459 vehicles. The ship was therefore not a symbolic corporate asset; it was being used to deliver a large shipment of BYD cars to a growing overseas market.

The fleet then expanded. BYD CHANGZHOU, announced as the second vessel, retained the 199.9-meter length and 7,000-vehicle configuration and also used LNG dual-fuel propulsion.

In April 2025, BYD announced BYD SHENZHEN, its fourth dedicated carrier. The company described it as 219.9 meters long, with 16 decks and capacity for 9,200 standard vehicles. BYD called it the largest vehicle carrier then in operation by carrying capacity.

BYD announced delivery of its fifth carrier, BYD XI’AN, in June 2025. The sequence matters: multiple named ships, an announced expansion plan and completed international voyages point to a planned export network rather than a one-off publicity project.

Why an automaker needs its own car carriers

Building an electric car is only part of selling it abroad. The vehicle must be transported from a factory to a port, loaded onto a suitable vessel, moved across an ocean, cleared through the destination port and delivered into a regional distribution system. If any link is constrained, a manufacturer can have finished vehicles waiting in China while overseas dealers lack inventory.

That problem has become more important as Chinese automakers expand beyond their domestic market. The International Energy Agency reported that Chinese electric-car exports nearly doubled in 2025. It also reported that Chinese original-equipment manufacturers accounted for 70% of China’s electric-car exports in 2024, up from 55% in 2023. China exported nearly 1.25 million electric cars in 2024, the largest national share of global electric-car exports.

Those volumes place pressure on the global fleet of pure car and truck carriers, commonly called PCTCs. A manufacturer can increase production faster than new vehicle-carrier capacity can be added. At the same time, BYD is competing with other Chinese brands for access to the same ships and sailing schedules.

  • Reserve capacity: BYD does not have to rely entirely on whether a third-party carrier has space when its vehicles are ready.
  • Coordinate production and sailing dates: Factory output, port loading and overseas launch schedules can be planned as one system.
  • Move large batches: A single ship can carry thousands of vehicles to a target market.
  • Reduce scheduling uncertainty: BYD can make international deliveries less dependent on commercial-carrier availability and disruptions in the freight market.
  • Support market expansion: More predictable transport makes it easier to launch or replenish vehicles in Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia, Australia and other regions.

BYD has not published a complete calculation showing exactly how much its ships save compared with chartering or booking capacity from outside carriers. It would therefore be wrong to assign a specific dollar saving or claim that owning ships is always cheaper. The better-supported conclusion is that the vessels provide control, capacity and predictability—which can be strategically valuable even when the direct cost advantage is uncertain.

Why BYD uses roll-on/roll-off ships

A roll-on/roll-off ship is designed for wheeled cargo. Cars are driven onto the vessel through ramps, secured on internal decks and later driven off at the destination. That is more practical for finished automobiles than loading each car into an individual shipping container.

BYD’s ships are specialized vehicle carriers, often described as pure car and truck carriers. Their published capacities range from roughly 7,000 standard vehicles on EXPLORER NO.1 and BYD CHANGZHOU to 9,200 on BYD SHENZHEN. Actual loading numbers can vary by vehicle size, deck configuration and the mix of cars being transported, so the headline capacity should not be treated as a guaranteed count on every voyage.

EXPLORER NO.1’s Brazil voyage illustrates the operating model. Its published maximum was 7,000 vehicles, but BYD reported that 5,459 vehicles arrived at Suape. That difference is not evidence of a problem; it shows why nominal ship capacity and the cargo carried on a particular sailing are separate figures.

Is BYD becoming a shipping company?

Not in the usual sense. The available evidence supports calling BYD an automaker with a dedicated vehicle-shipping fleet, or a company integrating its vehicle-export logistics. It does not establish that BYD operates a general-purpose liner service, sells regular shipping services to unrelated automakers or accepts ordinary third-party cargo.

BYD’s announcements describe the ships as part of its effort to transport its new-energy vehicles and strengthen its international logistics network. A vessel could theoretically carry another company’s cars when capacity is available, but there is no basis here for claiming that BYD carries competitors’ vehicles or markets spare space commercially.

This distinction is important. A conventional shipping line sells transport capacity as its main business. BYD is using maritime assets primarily as infrastructure for its main business: manufacturing and selling vehicles.

The green-shipping claim needs careful wording

BYD highlights LNG dual-fuel propulsion, shore-power systems, efficient engines, shaft generators and other energy-saving equipment on its carriers. Those features support describing the vessels as efficiency-focused or as having a lower-emission design than many older car carriers.

They do not make the ships zero-emission or carbon-free. LNG is still a combustion fuel, and the company materials cited for these vessels do not provide a complete lifecycle assessment covering fuel production, transport, combustion and possible methane leakage.

The accurate description is therefore “LNG dual-fuel vehicle carriers” or “vehicle carriers fitted with efficiency-oriented technology.” Calling them zero-carbon ships would go beyond the available evidence.

How shipping fits BYD’s wider business model

BYD’s official corporate materials list passenger vehicles alongside buses, trucks, forklifts, energy storage and other transportation-related activities. The company is also building overseas sales, distribution and manufacturing capabilities. Its ships fit that broader pattern of controlling more of the industrial system around its products.

For a vehicle manufacturer, shipping is not merely an administrative service purchased after production is complete. It can affect:

  • when a new model reaches a foreign market;
  • how much inventory is available to dealers;
  • whether production can be matched to regional demand;
  • how exposed the company is to vessel shortages and freight-rate changes; and
  • how quickly BYD can scale sales outside China.

UN Trade and Development’s maritime research provides the larger context: ports, trade routes, shipping capacity and disruptions influence the movement and economics of goods worldwide. For BYD, the ship is the visible part of a larger logistics system involving factories, rail and road transport, ports, vessels, customs and regional distribution.

Why the timing matters

Chinese automakers are looking abroad as competition in China intensifies. Overseas markets offer growth, but they also create longer supply chains and more exposure to port congestion, vessel shortages, route disruptions and changing trade rules.

The need for specialized capacity is especially clear for electric vehicles. EVs are finished, high-value products that must be moved in large numbers while meeting safety and handling requirements. They cannot simply be treated like an undifferentiated bulk commodity. A manufacturer expanding into several continents benefits from knowing that an appropriate vehicle carrier will be available when production is ready.

BYD’s fleet does not eliminate all logistics risks. Ships still depend on ports, fuel, weather, maritime routes, customs processes and destination-country regulations. A dedicated fleet also brings capital, maintenance, crewing, insurance and utilization responsibilities. But it gives BYD another lever with which to manage those risks instead of leaving every sailing decision to an outside carrier.

What the ships say about BYD’s global strategy

The vessels are a physical expression of BYD’s overseas ambition. The company is not merely exporting occasional batches of cars; it is trying to create a repeatable international sales system. Dedicated carriers can connect high-volume Chinese production with a growing network of foreign markets in a more coordinated way.

That is why describing BYD only as an electric-car manufacturer misses part of its competitive model. Its capabilities span vehicle production, battery technology, electronics, multiple transportation categories, energy products, overseas distribution and now dedicated maritime logistics.

The strongest conclusion is practical rather than sensational: BYD is getting into shipping because selling vehicles around the world requires control over the route between the factory and the customer. Its car carriers are not a side hobby and, based on the available evidence, not the beginning of a general shipping line. They are infrastructure designed to make BYD’s international expansion more scalable and predictable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is BYD buying or operating ships?

BYD is using dedicated roll-on/roll-off vehicle carriers to reserve capacity, coordinate export schedules and move large batches of its cars to overseas markets. The ships extend BYD’s control from manufacturing into international vehicle logistics.

Is BYD becoming a general shipping company?

No. The available evidence describes a dedicated fleet for transporting BYD’s new-energy vehicles. It does not establish that BYD operates a conventional liner service or routinely carries competitors’ cars and other third-party cargo.

Are BYD’s car carriers zero-emission ships?

BYD’s vessels use LNG dual-fuel propulsion and other efficiency-focused systems, but LNG is a combustion fuel. The ships should not be described as zero-emission or carbon-free without a complete lifecycle emissions assessment.

The Bottom Line

BYD’s ships are best understood as an extension of its EV business, not a pivot into general cargo shipping. Dedicated roll-on/roll-off carriers give the automaker access to vehicle capacity, more control over export timing and a way to support rising overseas sales. The strategy may improve logistics resilience, but BYD has not publicly established exact cost savings or a third-party shipping business.
