Its defining features are a 124.9cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine, four-speed semi-automatic transmission, 17-inch wheels, disc brakes with front ABS, an upright riding position, and a low 31.5-inch seat. It is best understood as a practical city-to-outdoors motorcycle—not a high-speed highway machine, enduro bike, or competition motorcycle.

What the CT125’s design is intended to do
The Hunter Cub name describes the motorcycle’s broad utility concept. Honda positions the CT125 for leisure riding across different environments, from city streets to outdoor routes. The upswept muffler, upright layout, 17-inch wheels, and increased suspension capability give it more clearance and versatility than a basic small street motorcycle.
That does not make it a serious enduro or motocross bike. The documented specification supports urban travel, gravel roads, exploring, carrying equipment, and light trails. It does not establish highway performance, a particular top speed, extreme off-road durability, or suitability for competition. Those depend on conditions, rider weight, gearing, maintenance, and use—and are not claims that can be inferred from the specification sheet alone.
Semi-automatic operation
The four-speed transmission is one of the CT125’s most important ownership characteristics. The rider selects gears with the foot-operated shifter, but the automatic centrifugal clutch means there is no conventional hand-operated clutch lever to coordinate.
That arrangement preserves manual gear selection while simplifying starts, stops, and low-speed riding. It is central to the bike’s approachable utility character, but it should not be confused with an automatic scooter transmission: the CT125 still has selectable gears and a chain final drive.
Chassis, braking, and everyday practicality
The 31.5-inch seat height is relatively accessible for a full-size motorcycle, while the 259-pound curb weight remains substantial enough to provide a planted platform without making the machine a featherweight off-road motorcycle. The upright ergonomics suit short urban trips, errands, and slower exploration.
Both wheels use 17-inch tires, with Honda specifying 80/90-17 sizing front and rear. The front 220mm hydraulic disc includes ABS, and the rear uses a 190mm disc. ABS is a meaningful safety feature on changing pavement, but it does not turn the motorcycle into a high-performance braking platform or eliminate the need for appropriate speed and surface awareness.

The 1.4-gallon tank, of which 0.3 gallon is reserve, is practical for a small utility motorcycle but should not be used to promise a particular range. Actual range varies with speed, load, terrain, temperature, tire pressure, maintenance, and riding style. Honda’s published capacity is the reliable planning figure; a used-bike buyer should establish real range from the motorcycle’s own fuel consumption rather than an online estimate.

Who should consider a 2021 CT125?
- Urban commuters: The compact dimensions, upright position, fuel injection, and clutch-free gear changes suit stop-and-go travel.
- Utility-focused riders: The platform works well for errands and carrying equipment when fitted with compatible luggage.
- Explorers: The suspension, wheel size, and upswept exhaust support gravel and light-trail use.
- New or returning riders: The semi-automatic drivetrain removes conventional clutch-lever operation while retaining gear selection.
- Owners who value customization: Racks, boxes, guards, and other CT125-specific parts support practical builds.
It is a less obvious choice for someone who primarily needs sustained high-speed travel, aggressive off-road performance, heavy two-up touring, or a motorcycle designed for competition. Honda’s light-trail positioning should be treated as a use-case boundary, not merely a marketing invitation to ride anywhere.
Maintenance: what owners should take seriously
Honda’s owner’s manual states that maintenance is essential for safety, protecting the owner’s investment, obtaining maximum performance, avoiding breakdowns, and reducing air pollution. It also places responsibility on the owner for the pre-ride inspection and for following the periodic maintenance schedule.
Before every ride, use the owner’s manual as the controlling checklist. At a minimum, that means checking the condition and inflation of both tires, brake operation, lights, controls, chain condition and slack, fuel level, and signs of leaks or damage. The exact inspection and service intervals should come from the manual for the 2021 Trail125A, not from a generic CT125 maintenance chart.
Work within your tools and skills
Honda specifically cautions owners to attempt maintenance only after reading the instructions and confirming that the necessary tools, parts, and skills are available. Routine inspection and straightforward owner maintenance can be reasonable, but brake, engine, electrical, suspension, and structural repairs should be handled with the correct service information and, when appropriate, by a qualified technician.
Honda identifies the 2021 Trail125A Service Manual as an authorized repair reference and states that it is available through a Honda dealer or Helm, Inc. Availability and pricing can change, so confirm the current edition and model coverage before ordering. A factory service manual is more appropriate for disassembly and repair than relying on a forum post or a manual for a different model year.

Tires and fitment are safety issues
The owner’s manual says to use the recommended tires, or equivalents with the same size, construction, speed rating, and load range. This is not a cosmetic parts decision. Incorrect tires can adversely affect handling and stability.
When replacing tires, verify all of the following:
- 80/90-17 size for the applicable wheel position;
- compatible construction and intended use;
- the required speed rating and load range;
- correct direction of rotation, if marked;
- proper clearance and correct inflation pressure; and
- compatibility with the motorcycle’s wheels and braking system.
Do not assume that a tire marketed for another small Honda or a visually similar 17-inch tire is automatically an approved equivalent.
Best first upgrade: underbody protection
For owners who actually ride gravel or light trails, a model-specific skid plate or engine guard is the most defensible first physical upgrade. The lower engine area can encounter small stones and debris, and Honda’s outdoor-oriented positioning makes underbody protection relevant without implying that the motorcycle is built for severe off-road abuse.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →One documented example is the Kitaco CT125 skid plate, which is listed for CT125 Hunter Cub JA55/JA65 models. Kitaco describes an aluminum skid plate with a stainless-steel maintenance lid and four-piece construction. Its stated purpose is protecting the bottom of the engine from small stones, and the design allows an oil change without removing the plate.
That is aftermarket underbody protection, not proof that every vulnerable factory component is covered. Before buying, confirm the frame or model code, year, mounting points, exhaust clearance, and service-access details. A useful shopping search is “2021 Honda CT125 Trail 125 skid plate” or “CT125 Hunter Cub engine guard.” A listing that only says “Honda CT125” without a clear fitment statement deserves additional verification.
If you shop through a marketplace, treat CT125 Hunter Cub skid plate as a search phrase rather than a guarantee of a particular listing. Live stock, listing accuracy, seller quality, price, and U.S. compatibility must be checked at the time of purchase.
Chain and sprocket replacement: verify before ordering
Honda’s 2021 U.S. specification lists a #420 chain with a 14-tooth front sprocket and 39-tooth rear sprocket. JT Sprockets also lists the 2021–2022 Honda CT125A/AC Trail 125/Hunter Cub with 14T front and 39T rear gearing, which provides a useful starting point for replacement-part research.

However, the aftermarket catalogue contains a chain-pitch value that conflicts with Honda’s official #420 specification. Because chain pitch is a fundamental fitment detail, do not order solely from the conflicting catalogue entry. Confirm the chain pitch, length, grade, sprocket compatibility, and model fitment against Honda parts data, an authorized dealer, the owner’s documentation, or the motorcycle’s VIN.

For the same reason, “2021 Trail 125 drive chain” and “CT125 chain replacement” are useful research terms, not sufficient technical specifications. If the seller cannot clearly identify the correct application, stop and verify before installation.

Carrying capability is one of the CT125’s natural strengths. The accessory market includes front racks, rear-carrying solutions, side boxes, and mounting brackets aimed at commuting, grocery runs, touring, and camping-oriented builds.
Do not assume that a rack or box advertised for “the CT125” fits every year or every market. Check:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- the exact model year and market;
- the applicable frame or model code;
- mounting points and required hardware;
- clearance around the exhaust, suspension, seat, and lighting;
- the rack or box’s own load rating; and
- Honda’s owner’s-manual guidance for total loading and accessory safety.
Webike’s CT125 accessory coverage documents front- and rear-carrying equipment as well as a side box and mounting bracket for the Hunter Cub platform. That makes CT125 touring accessories, Honda Hunter Cub rear rack, and Trail 125 side box sensible category searches. They should not be treated as universal-fit recommendations until the specific product’s 2021 compatibility, load limits, shipping, and hardware are confirmed.
Buying a used 2021 CT125 or Trail125A
Model identity is the first check. A U.S. motorcycle should correspond to the Trail125A documentation, while an imported or international example may be advertised as a CT125 Hunter Cub. Record the VIN and market before ordering parts.
Then inspect the motorcycle according to how it appears to have been used:
- Look underneath: Check the engine cases, frame rails, skid-plate mounting areas, and exhaust for impact damage, deep scrapes, bends, or fresh repairs.
- Check the controls: Confirm smooth throttle operation, gear selection, clutch-free takeoff behavior, brake feel, and steering movement.
- Inspect the drivetrain: Look for neglected chain lubrication, excessive slack, damaged sprocket teeth, rust, or an aftermarket chain with uncertain specifications.
- Inspect the wheels and tires: Confirm the specified size, adequate tread, no sidewall damage, and no obvious rim or spoke problems.
- Test the brakes and ABS carefully: Verify normal braking in a safe area and check for warning lights or abnormal operation.
- Examine accessories: Non-factory racks, boxes, guards, wiring, and fasteners should be checked for secure installation and model-specific fitment.
- Ask for maintenance records: The owner’s manual and service documentation matter more than a seller’s generic statement that the bike was “fully serviced.”
Do not use published specifications to infer reliability, fuel economy, top speed, or remaining service life on a particular used example. Those are condition- and use-dependent questions requiring inspection, records, and—where practical—a qualified pre-purchase evaluation.

Bottom line
The 2021 Honda CT125 Hunter Cub—sold in the U.S. as the Trail125A—is most compelling as a small, practical motorcycle that bridges city transportation and light outdoor exploration. Its 124.9cc fuel-injected engine, four-speed semi-automatic transmission, low seat, 17-inch wheels, front ABS, and carrying-accessory potential make it unusually versatile for its size.
Buy it and equip it for the job it is documented to do: commuting, errands, gravel, light trails, and leisure riding. Start with careful maintenance and, for trail use, a properly verified skid plate or engine guard. Treat tires, chains, sprockets, racks, boxes, and imported parts as fitment and safety decisions—not interchangeable accessories simply because a listing includes the words “CT125.”
Specifications and maintenance guidance are based on American Honda’s 2021 Trail125A specification sheet and owner’s manual, Honda Global’s CT125 positioning, Kitaco’s CT125 product information, JT Sprockets’ catalogue, and Webike’s CT125 accessory coverage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2021 Honda CT125 the same as the Trail125?
In the United States, the 2021 Honda CT125 Hunter Cub was documented as the Trail125A. International listings commonly use the CT125 Hunter Cub name, so U.S. shoppers should search both names and verify the VIN and model code before ordering parts.
What are the key 2021 Honda Trail125 specifications?
The U.S. specification lists a 124.9cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine, four-speed semi-automatic transmission, 31.5-inch seat height, 259-pound curb weight, 1.4-gallon fuel capacity, 17-inch wheels, a 220mm front disc with ABS, and a 190mm rear disc.
Is the 2021 CT125 suitable for off-road riding?
It is intended for city streets, leisure riding, gravel, and light trails. Honda’s positioning does not support treating it as an enduro, motocross, competition, or extreme off-road motorcycle.
What chain and sprocket sizes does the 2021 Trail125 use?
Honda lists a #420 chain with a 14-tooth front sprocket and 39-tooth rear sprocket for the 2021 U.S. Trail125A. Because an aftermarket catalogue contains conflicting chain-pitch information, verify the replacement chain against Honda parts data, an authorized dealer, the owner’s documentation, or the VIN.
