Why Automotive Electronics Need Faster, Smarter Interfaces

Automakers are moving toward software-defined platforms and digital cockpits to coordinate displays, voice, connectivity and selected driver-assistance functions. Here’s how the shift works, what it could mean for drivers and what to check in a vehicle.

Cars need faster, smarter interfaces because more of their features now depend on software: displays, navigation, voice controls, connectivity and some driver-assistance functions must work together and keep improving after a vehicle is built. Automakers are responding with more capable digital cockpits and centralized computing platforms, while separating safety-critical workloads from entertainment and other less critical functions.

What is changing in automotive electronics?

Many vehicles have traditionally used separate electronic control units (ECUs) for different functions. A newer approach moves more processing onto shared, scalable computing platforms and treats vehicle features as software that can be developed, updated and refined over time. This is part of the shift toward the software-defined vehicle.

The change is visible in the digital cockpit, where instrument displays, infotainment, voice interaction, maps, connectivity and personalized services can be coordinated as one experience rather than as isolated features. Qualcomm describes its cockpit platforms as combining processing, AI, cloud connectivity, personalization and safety-focused functions.

Software-defined does not mean every vehicle function is handled by one computer or that all features can be freely changed. Which functions can be updated or consolidated depends on the vehicle’s architecture, software and safety requirements.

How do distributed and centralized systems differ?

Approach How it works Potential benefit Design consideration
Distributed ECUs Separate controllers handle particular vehicle functions. Functions can be built around dedicated hardware and software. Coordinating features across separate systems can make development and integration more complex.
Centralized or zonal compute More processing is consolidated into powerful computers or organized by vehicle zones; software can coordinate multiple workloads. Can reduce duplicated hardware and help coordinate cockpit, connectivity and selected driver-assistance workloads. Shared hardware needs careful software separation so one workload does not compromise another’s safety or performance.

These architectures are not simply a choice between many controllers and one universal computer. A vehicle can consolidate some work while retaining separate systems where performance, reliability or safety demands it.

What makes an interface feel faster and smarter?

More capable processing and graphics

Responsive screens, rich graphics and simultaneous tasks require computing capacity suited to the workload. Intel’s April 22, 2025 software-defined-vehicle announcement describes a second-generation chiplet-based system-on-chip with up to 10 times AI performance and up to 3 times graphics performance. Intel also describes combining advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) and immersive cockpit experiences on a central, energy-efficient compute platform. These are Intel’s product claims, not independent benchmarks of a production vehicle.

AI, connectivity and useful context

AI can support more natural voice interaction and help a system respond to context; connectivity can bring in cloud services and updates. Qualcomm and Google’s October 22, 2024 collaboration targets generative-AI digital cockpits using Snapdragon edge-AI system-on-chips, Android Automotive OS and Google Cloud. The announced examples include voice assistants, immersive maps and real-time updates intended to anticipate driver needs. The announcement describes a collaboration’s aims, not a guarantee that every feature is available in every vehicle.

Virtualized software development

Virtualization lets developers recreate cockpit environments in software, test changes and collect feedback without relying exclusively on a physical vehicle. In a January 9, 2024 release, Stellantis, BlackBerry QNX and AWS said their virtual cockpit platform enabled infotainment technology to be delivered to customers up to 100 times faster. That figure describes the platform’s reported development workflow, not a faster response time for a driver using a screen.

How can centralized computing affect the driving experience?

When cockpit features share a platform, the vehicle can coordinate the displays, maps, voice services and connectivity more consistently. More capable graphics and processing can support richer interfaces, while software updates may let automakers refine features after initial production. Personalization could make the system better suited to a driver’s preferences, provided the vehicle and services support it.

Centralization can also bring selected ADAS workloads onto the same computing platform as infotainment. At CES 2024, Qualcomm and Bosch announced a central vehicle computer capable of running infotainment and ADAS functions on one system-on-chip. Sharing a chip does not mean the functions should share unrestricted access: isolation, prioritization and validation are essential considerations when a system combines tasks with different safety implications.

Why are automakers investing in this shift?

Consolidated platforms and virtual development can change how quickly automakers build, validate and deploy features across vehicle lines. Stellantis describes STLA Brain as a single, scalable electronics-and-software platform. On its current technology page, Stellantis reports:

  • “up to 4 times faster feature development — Stellantis, current technology page”
  • “6 times more computing power — Stellantis, current technology page”
  • “up to 1,000 times more bandwidth — Stellantis, current technology page”

These are Stellantis-reported platform figures; they should not be read as independently verified results or promises about every model. Together with the separate virtual-cockpit claim, they show why development speed has become part of the competition: automakers want to deliver and refine software more quickly, not only install more capable hardware.

What should drivers look for in a smarter cockpit?

Specifications alone do not show whether an interface will be useful in everyday driving. When comparing vehicles, consider how the system behaves as a whole:

  • Responsiveness: Check whether menus, maps and display transitions react promptly during ordinary use.
  • Voice and controls: Consider whether voice commands and physical controls make common tasks straightforward without demanding excessive attention.
  • Connectivity and offline use: Find out which features need an internet connection and what remains available without one.
  • Updates: Ask which software features can receive updates, how those updates are delivered and whether availability varies by model or market.
  • Personalization: Check which settings and services can be tailored, and what information the system uses to provide them.
  • Safety: Look for an interface that keeps information and interaction manageable while driving; richer graphics or more features are not automatically safer.

What are the trade-offs?

A more capable, connected cockpit can enable richer interaction, but it also makes software integration more demanding. Centralized systems must manage competing workloads and isolate safety-relevant functions. Cloud-connected features depend on connectivity and service availability, while personalization and AI raise questions about how driver data is used. The announcements described here establish that automakers and technology suppliers are pursuing these approaches; they do not establish that every vehicle will offer the same features, update support or user experience.
