What is AUDI, the brand without the rings?
Audi introduced AUDI in Shanghai in November 2024, presenting it as a new sister brand for China. Its all-capital lettering distinguishes it visually from the familiar four-ring Audi identity, while Audi says the new marque remains connected to its engineering and brand heritage. The launch included the AUDI E concept, which was a concept car—not the production E5 Sportback that followed. Audi’s November 2024 announcement described the brand and concept.

The distinction matters: AUDI is a China-focused addition, not a global replacement for the four-ring brand. Audi later presented the new marque alongside its other China-market activity at Auto Shanghai. Audi’s 2025 Auto Shanghai announcement uses AUDI for the sister brand.

Audi’s stated reason was to differentiate a China-focused brand aimed at electric and intelligent vehicles, including customers it described as more tech-savvy. At the launch, Audi CEO Gernot Döllner said the move was intended to reach “new and more tech-savvy customer segments.” That is Audi’s explanation of its strategy, not independent evidence about what Chinese consumers want or how they will respond.

Audi also presented the partnership with SAIC as a way to combine the companies’ capabilities and speed development. In its 2024 launch announcement, Audi said the collaboration model reduced time-to-market by more than 30 percent. That is Audi’s stated figure, not an independently verified comparison. What is the AUDI E5 Sportback?
The E5 Sportback is the first production vehicle under the AUDI name: a fully electric fastback developed with SAIC on the Advanced Digitized Platform. Audi unveiled the production model on April 22, 2025. The E5 is distinct from the AUDI E concept shown at the brand’s 2024 debut.

Audi said its global Audi and SAIC engineering team cut development time for the E5 Sportback by 30 percent. This is a separate, later claim from Audi’s 2024 statement about a more-than-30-percent reduction in time-to-market; the two figures describe different things and should not be combined. Both are company-reported figures rather than independent test results. Audi’s April 2025 production-model announcement describes the car and development claim.
When did the E5 go on sale in China?
Audi said production and pre-sales of the E5 Sportback began in China on August 18, 2025. Its later announcement about the car being named 2026 China Car of the Year says the official market launch and customer deliveries began in September 2025. These are successive milestones: the August announcement covers production and pre-sales; the later account identifies the market launch and deliveries. Audi’s August 18 announcement and its award announcement give those dates.

What other AUDI models has Audi announced?
Audi’s model plans have been described in announcements made at different times, so they should be read as plans announced then—not as a single confirmed delivery schedule.
