Aston Martin’s pre-race concern was severe vibration from its Honda power unit: it had damaged the battery and travelled through the chassis to the drivers’ hands. The team planned to limit running, but it had not announced a fixed plan to retire both cars after a few laps. In the race, Fernando Alonso retired after 21 laps; Lance Stroll completed 43 laps and took the chequered flag, but was not classified.
Why Aston Martin feared its cars could not run for long
During pre-season testing, vibration from the Honda power unit damaged the battery and was severe enough to break other parts and make the car difficult to handle. Honda had not identified the root cause before the Australian Grand Prix, although it was working on interim countermeasures. Aston Martin had also completed the least mileage of the 11 teams across the two Bahrain tests, leaving it with limited running data. Formula 1’s pre-race report covered the battery and vibration concerns.
On the Thursday before the race, team principal Adrian Newey said the vibration travelled through the chassis and reached the drivers’ fingers. He relayed that Fernando Alonso believed 25 consecutive laps could put his hands at risk of permanent nerve damage, while Lance Stroll put his own threshold at 15 laps. Those were the drivers’ reported concerns as conveyed by Newey—not medical findings or independently measured safety limits. Aston Martin said it would heavily restrict running until it could address the vibration at its source. Newey’s pre-race comments described the team’s approach.
Reliability was another concern. Newey said the team had only two batteries left, both installed in its cars in Melbourne, and described a new battery communication issue. That made careful component management important, but it did not amount to a confirmed order to stop both cars at a set lap.

Did Aston Martin plan to retire both cars after a few laps?
No fixed double-retirement schedule was established. Some pre-race coverage raised the prospect of both cars stopping early, but Crash.net reported that Aston Martin had no predetermined plan to retire both cars; a double retirement was a possibility, not a certainty. The team’s stated reasons for caution were the vibration’s threat to reliability and the drivers’ concerns about its effects on their hands.
The 15- and 25-lap figures were reported consecutive-lap thresholds, not promised race distances or an announced retirement schedule. Nor did every stop mean an immediate, catastrophic failure: the cars went back to the garage for checks, and Aston Martin used running to gather information while managing components.

Why Lance Stroll needed permission to start
Stroll did not set a qualifying time within 107% of the fastest time in Q1. According to the FIA stewards’ decision, Aston Martin kept Car 18 out of qualifying while investigating a damaged oil line. The stewards permitted him to start, noting that Alonso had shown the car could qualify within the 107% threshold and citing Stroll’s experience and prior record. That ruling allowed him to race; it did not predict how many laps he would complete.

Both Aston Martins started the Australian Grand Prix. Alonso’s car was checked in the garage, returned to the track to collect data and later retired. Newey said the team asked him to stop to preserve components. The FIA’s final classification records Alonso at 21 laps.

Stroll also stopped for checks, rejoined and completed 43 laps. He took the chequered flag 12 laps behind the winner, but he had covered less than 90% of the winner’s distance and was therefore not classified. Honda later said its countermeasures worked during the running the team completed without reliability issues. That supplier assessment does not mean either Aston Martin finished the full race distance; the official classification lists both as non-classified.

How to read the pre-race warnings
- Car reliability: Power-unit vibration had damaged the battery during testing, and the underlying cause remained unresolved before Melbourne.
- Driver welfare: Newey said vibration reached the drivers’ hands and relayed their concerns about how long they could tolerate it. The lap figures were attributed judgments, not clinical thresholds.
- Race strategy: Aston Martin restricted running and managed components, but did not have a confirmed plan to retire both cars after a handful of laps.
- Actual result: Alonso retired after 21 laps; Stroll ran 43 laps and was not classified.
