Each adapts the engine to a particular car’s role, packaging, performance target and driving character. The DB11 V8, for example, received bespoke intake and exhaust hardware, wet-sump lubrication, lower mounting and revised engine and throttle mapping. Later Aston Martin V8s—and AMG’s own models—use different hardware and calibrations.
What “the same 4.0-liter V8” actually means
Mercedes-AMG identifies the Vantage, DB11 and DBX applications as members of its M177 engine family, and says Aston Martin has used AMG technology since 2017. That establishes a shared engine-family foundation; it does not mean every Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG has interchangeable hardware or identical software. Mercedes-AMG’s engine overview gives a broad 510–550 hp range for Aston Martin applications, not a specification for every model year. Model-specific figures should be checked against the relevant car and year. Mercedes-AMG engine overview.

Why Aston Martin changed the DB11 V8
When Aston Martin introduced the DB11 V8 in 2017, it described the engine as supplied by Mercedes-AMG but tailored for the car. Aston Martin said it had freedom to adapt the power unit to the DB11’s needs: a grand tourer with a more sporting bias alongside the V12 model.
- Air and sound: Aston Martin specified a bespoke air intake and exhaust.
- Packaging and lubrication: It used wet-sump lubrication, new engine mounts and a slimline sump to place the engine lower in the car.
- Response and character: New ECU software and revised engine and throttle mapping shaped the car’s feel and sound.
- Chassis behavior: The V8 DB11 also received suspension and stability-control revisions.
For that 2017 DB11 V8 launch specification, Aston Martin quoted 503 bhp (510 PS), 675 Nm, 0–62 mph in 4.0 seconds and a 187 mph top speed. These are launch figures for that DB11, not generic outputs for Aston Martin’s later V8 models. Aston Martin’s DB11 V8 announcement, 28 June 2017, details the changes.

Why the specification changes from one Aston Martin to another
“Aston Martin V8” does not describe one permanent hardware package. The intended use of the car—and its performance target—can prompt substantial changes to the engine and its surroundings.
Vantage: more performance, more cooling
Aston Martin’s Vantage engineering material describes larger twin turbochargers, revised cam profiles and an optimized compression ratio. The higher performance target also required a redesigned cooling system with additional radiators and auxiliary coolers. Those details describe the Vantage application, not every Aston Martin using an AMG-family V8. Aston Martin’s Vantage material provides the model-specific context.

Valhalla: a different crank and oiling system
The Valhalla’s 4.0-liter V8 is a particularly clear example of why the badge alone is not enough to identify an engine specification. Aston Martin says Valhalla uses a flat-plane crankshaft and dry-sump lubrication, while the Vantage, DB12 and DBX707 use the cross-plane V8.

For the Valhalla, Aston Martin also lists new camshafts and exhaust manifolds, pistons designed for higher peak pressure, roller-bearing twin-scroll turbochargers and a larger compressor wheel. The company says its compressor delivers almost 20% more air per hour than the DBX707’s cross-plane V8 compressor. That is an air-delivery comparison—not a claim of 20% more engine power. Aston Martin’s Valhalla technical overview describes this hybrid-supercar application.

Crankshaft choice is one part of the tune
AMG describes cross-plane V8s as offering smoothness and low-speed torque. A flat-plane crank alternates firing between cylinder banks and gives the exhaust gas columns more uniform behavior, supporting gas exchange and a more agile throttle response. These are design tendencies, not a complete explanation of how a finished car feels: turbochargers, calibration, gearing, exhaust, cooling and chassis setup matter too.
The 2020 Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series shows how far AMG can take a model-specific variant. Its engine received the code M178 LS2 and a flat-plane crank, dry-sump lubrication, changed camshafts and exhaust manifolds, larger compressor wheels and larger intercoolers. AMG described the redesign as a radical change to pursue greater power, more agile throttle response and maximum torque. Those components belong to the Black Series package; they should not be attributed to every AMG 4.0-liter V8. Mercedes-Benz Media’s 2020 GT Black Series technical release outlines the changes.

AMG also tunes the V8 for each car
The differences are not simply Aston Martin’s changes versus a single AMG baseline. Mercedes-AMG develops different versions for its own vehicles, too. The second-generation GT Coupe, introduced in 2023, offered distinct GT 55 and GT 63 outputs. AMG describes model-specific intake and intercooling, software development, oil-sump and intercooler placement, and cooling circuits intended to handle track loads.
| Application | Published output | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| Mercedes-AMG GT 55 Coupe (second generation, 2023) | 469 hp / 516 lb-ft | GT 55 trim, not a universal AMG V8 rating. |
| Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Coupe (second generation, 2023) | 577 hp / 590 lb-ft | GT 63 trim, not a universal AMG V8 rating. |
| Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series (2020) | 720 hp / 590 lb-ft | M178 LS2 Black Series engine; peak power at 6,700–6,900 rpm and peak torque at 2,000–6,000 rpm. |
The figures are manufacturer-published for the named applications and years; they are not results from a back-to-back comparison. AMG’s Black Series release gives that car’s specification, and Mercedes-Benz Media’s 2023 GT Coupe release gives the GT 55 and GT 63 outputs.

How to compare two 4.0-liter V8s fairly
Start with the exact models and model years. Then compare the components and vehicle systems that determine whether they are genuinely similar:
- Engine family and crankshaft: Check the engine code and whether the application uses a cross-plane or flat-plane crank.
- Lubrication and packaging: Note wet-sump or dry-sump lubrication, engine position, mounts and sump design.
- Air path and internals: Compare intake and exhaust, turbochargers, camshafts, compression ratio and other stated internal changes.
- Calibration: Look for model-specific ECU, throttle and transmission calibration rather than assuming shared software.
- Thermal and chassis integration: Check cooling hardware and how suspension and stability systems are set up for the car.
- Performance figures: Keep each output with its model, year, units and stated conditions. A launch figure for a 2017 DB11 is not a like-for-like test against a later AMG coupe.
Manufacturer launch and technical material is useful for identifying declared hardware and design intent, but it does not establish that one car is objectively better or quantify the effect of each change in an independent test.
