The ring’s color and shape alone cannot tell you which it is. A smooth film may be part of normal pad transfer, but a hard, raised, brittle spot—or braking symptoms such as vibration, grinding, pulling, an abnormal pedal, or reduced braking—calls for inspection. A photo cannot establish whether a rotor is safe or how much service life remains.
What can cause dark rings on a brake rotor?
The same dark appearance can have different causes, so do not diagnose a rotor by color alone.
Pad-material transfer or deposits
Brake pads can leave a transfer film on the rotor as part of brake operation, according to Chevrolet’s explanation of the brake system. Ferodo also associates glazing or dark spots with friction-material deposits transferred to the disc (Ferodo brake-disc troubleshooting). A transfer film by itself does not prove the rotor is damaged; glazing, uneven contact, vibration, or poor braking needs assessment of the full brake system.
Corrosion mixed with pad material and heat
A NHTSA-hosted 2013 service document describes darker rotor surfaces and visible pad footprints where corrosion, pad material, and heat combine. It also notes that corrosion-related thickness variation can cause pulsation (2013 brake rotor clean-up procedure). This is general corroborating information, not a current, vehicle-specific repair procedure.

Heat-related damage
Haldex’s heavy-vehicle ModulT Gen II technical manual describes martensite spotting: extreme heat changes the rotor’s metallic structure, leaving spots that are hard, raised, and brittle. Haldex says rotors in that condition should be replaced (Haldex ModulT Gen II technical manual). This heavy-vehicle guidance helps distinguish heat spots from lining transfer; it does not supply a passenger-car diagnosis or specification.
How to judge whether the marks need attention
Look at texture and symptoms, not just the ring’s outline. Do not scrape or sand an unexplained mark in an attempt to remove it; inspection is the safer way to identify its cause.

Symptoms such as vibration or noise do not identify the specific fault, but they make it unwise to assume a dark ring is harmless.
Check rotor thickness against the correct specification
There is no universal passenger-car minimum thickness to apply to every rotor. Compare the measured thickness with the minimum specified for the exact vehicle and rotor. Nissan notes that a rotor carries a minimum-thickness marking, and Brembo likewise directs users to the vehicle maker’s minimum (Nissan brake service information; Brembo rotor indications).

A thickness gauge or micrometer can measure the rotor, but the measurement alone cannot determine whether raised heat spots or other damage make it unsafe. If you are not equipped to inspect and measure it correctly, have a qualified technician do so.

Follow the bedding instructions supplied for the specific pads and rotors. Brembo gives an approximate bedding-in period of 300 km for its guidance and recommends effective, brief, gradual braking while checking for vibration and noise. It warns that extremely sharp or violent braking can overheat friction material (Brembo bedding-in guidance). This is not a universal rule for every brake setup, and bedding is not a fix for hard, raised, brittle spots or a diagnosis of existing dark rings. Do not perform repeated hard stops on public roads.
