Why Are Self-Driving Cars Bad? The Risks and What the Evidence Shows

Self-driving technology can struggle with hazards and changing road conditions, while partial automation can encourage drivers to overtrust it. Safety depends on the system, where it operates, and the evidence behind comparisons.

Self-driving cars are criticized because they must recognize hazards, predict what people on the road will do, and respond safely in situations that can be difficult to anticipate. Driver-assistance systems add another risk: people may trust them too much even though they are still responsible for driving. But “self-driving” covers different technologies, and the available evidence does not show that every automated vehicle is less safe than a human driver.

First, what does “self-driving” mean?

Cars marketed with hands-free or automated features do not necessarily drive themselves. The level of automation determines what the vehicle can do—and who must monitor the road.

System type What it does Who is responsible?
Level 2 driver assistance Can provide steering and acceleration or braking assistance at the same time. The driver must stay engaged, watch the road, and be ready to act.
Levels 4 and 5 Designed for automated driving rather than continuous human control; the specific driving conditions a system handles depend on its design. NHTSA says Levels 4 and 5 are not available for consumer purchase.

NHTSA says the highest automation available to consumers still requires full driver engagement and undivided attention. Its automated-vehicle safety guidance explains these distinctions. A driver-assistance feature should not be treated as permission to stop supervising the car.

Why do self-driving cars crash?

Road scenes are difficult to interpret

Automated driving systems have to detect hazards and anticipate how drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and other road users might move. The National Transportation Safety Board says testing of developmental systems has exposed limitations in both hazard detection and predicting road users’ movement. A missed or misread situation can leave a system with too little time to respond.

  • Shared or Solo Play: Children can watch the colorful gears turn and the car move, join parents or siblings on the floor, or enjoy independent play that supports interaction and observation.

Conditions can make detection harder. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety notes that lane-departure systems may struggle when lane markings are poor or covered by snow, and sensors may not work as well in low light or inclement weather. These are general limitations, not a prediction that every system will fail in every such condition. Performance depends on the design and the conditions in which the vehicle is operating.

Systems have limits on where and how they can operate

An automated vehicle is not automatically equipped to handle every road, speed, weather condition, or unusual hazard. Its operating domain—the conditions and places it is designed to handle—matters. When evaluating a system, consider where it is intended to operate and whether it can detect unexpected road users and manage a situation it was not designed for.

Why can driver assistance make people less attentive?

With Level 2 assistance, the person remains responsible for driving even while the car helps steer or control speed. That division of work can be difficult: the system handles some driving tasks, but the human must remain ready to take over. The NTSB warns that “automation complacency” can lead safety drivers or monitors to become distracted or stop watching the system and the road. IIHS says studies have found regular users can develop a false sense of security about what their system can do, potentially delaying intervention.

A specific example came on March 31, 2026, when the NTSB reported findings from its investigations into two fatal 2024 crashes involving Ford BlueCruise. The agency said the driver-monitoring systems were ineffective at detecting distraction or disengagement, and identified gaps in crash-data recording and federal performance standards. NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy said, “We cannot take a ‘hands off’ approach to hands-free driving technology. Lives depend on it.” The NTSB release describes the findings.

Are self-driving cars safer than human drivers?

There is no sound basis for a blanket yes-or-no answer covering every vehicle, system, and situation. The results depend on the automation level, operating domain, comparison being made, and quality of the crash data.

In a 2026 review, IIHS reported that driverless-operation Waymo vehicles had a 68% lower police-reportable crash involvement rate and an 81% lower injury-crash rate than police-reported human-driver rates in the same cities and years studied. Those comparisons apply to the vehicles, service, locations, period, and measures in that analysis—not to all autonomous vehicles or all driving conditions.

The same IIHS research summary found no crash-reduction advantage for partial driving automation over crash-avoidance systems alone in a comparison using police-reported crash data. That finding is about partial automation in that comparison; it does not show that every safety feature is ineffective. IIHS reports that some specific crash-avoidance systems reduce certain types of crashes. NHTSA likewise says automated technologies have the potential to prevent crashes and save lives.

Why are crash reports not enough to prove safety?

A crash count on its own cannot show whether a system is safer or less safe than another. Meaningful comparisons need reliable reporting and an exposure measure, such as how many vehicles were operating or how many miles they traveled.

When NHTSA released initial Standing General Order data on June 15, 2022, it warned that the data were not comprehensive and were not normalized by vehicles deployed or miles traveled. The agency said the dataset could not be used to compare manufacturers. Its release explains the limits; raw counts from that initial dataset should not be treated as a safety ranking.

Oversight and access to evidence also matter. The NTSB says there are no federal safety risk-management requirements for public-road testing of automated driving systems. Developer safety self-assessments are voluntary, are not evaluated by NHTSA, and often have limited value. These gaps make it harder to assess risk consistently across systems.

What are the disadvantages of autonomous vehicles?

  • Limits in perception and prediction: A system may have difficulty detecting a hazard or anticipating how another road user will move.
  • Dependence on conditions: Poor markings, snow cover, low light, or inclement weather can challenge some systems.
  • Overreliance with partial automation: A driver may pay less attention even though the system still requires active supervision.
  • Uneven evidence and oversight: Incomplete reporting, missing exposure data, and limited review can make comparisons difficult.

These concerns do not make every automated feature or vehicle equally risky. NHTSA reported that 39,254 people were killed in U.S. motor-vehicle crashes in 2024—a figure about road fatalities generally, not crashes involving self-driving cars. The broader safety context matters: the relevant question is how a particular system performs against an appropriate comparison, not whether automation is inherently good or bad.

How can you judge a self-driving or driver-assistance system?

Before relying on a feature, check what it is designed to do and what the driver must still do. For a more meaningful safety comparison, look for evidence on:
