Factory cassette players were common in cars through the 1990s, and a few late-model US vehicles were reported to still offer them into the 2000s. As of October 2026, no current new-car model has been identified as offering a factory cassette deck, so “still support” really means “found in used cars.” The most often cited late examples are the 2005–06 Honda CR-V, the 2008 Acura TL, and the 2010 Lexus SC 430. Those claims come from secondary overview pages, not original brochures, and no source offers a complete list. Whether a particular car has a cassette player depends on its model year, trim, sales market, and the radio that was actually installed.
Which cars had factory cassette players
The clearest evidence comes from contemporary trade coverage in the 1990s, which documented cassette options and cassette/CD combination units rather than cassette-only radios. The table below lists each example and how well it is supported.

How long factory cassettes lasted
Cassette decks were being replaced by CD players through the 1990s. Trade coverage from that decade documents cassette/CD combination units, and later secondary overviews describe cassette decks as rare by the late 2000s. The late-model examples above therefore sit at the tail end of production, and an option that appeared on a 2005 model may not have appeared on the same model in 2008.
Why “the last car with a cassette player” has no single answer

- Standard or optional: A deck fitted as standard equipment is a different claim from one sold as a paid option.
- Market: US, Canadian, European, and Japanese versions of the same model could be equipped differently. Most examples above are US-specific.
- Passenger cars or all vehicles: Trucks, SUVs, and sport vehicles were sometimes equipped differently from sedans.
- Factory or aftermarket: A cassette unit installed after purchase says nothing about what the manufacturer offered.
The most defensible wording is “among the last reported US factory examples,” with the equipment qualifier stated.
How to check a specific used car
- Look for a tape slot on the dashboard or center console, and identify the radio from its faceplate or model label. A tape slot alone does not confirm that the deck is factory-fitted or still functional.
- Match the exact model year, trim, and sales market to the original owner’s manual or sales brochure, then read its audio section. Manufacturer archives are the most reliable location. Third-party mirror sites may be incomplete or out of date.
- Ask the seller to play a tape in the actual unit. Check fast-forward, rewind, eject, and sound quality before buying. This is a practical inspection step, not a claim that any source tested those functions.
- If the deck has been replaced, do not assume the car retains cassette support from its model name or year. Confirm what is installed.
If the deck works: tapes and adapters
- Cassette tapes are the direct media for a working factory deck. Tape condition and format matter more than brand, and no particular brand is established as suitable for every player.
- Cassette adapters may work in some cars, but compatibility depends on the installed mechanism and how the device connects. Vehicle-specific manuals are the only reliable guide; do not assume one adapter suits every deck.
If the deck does not work
A failed deck is usually a repair question rather than a model question. For a specific vehicle and radio, an experienced legacy car-audio specialist is the appropriate place to start. Give the specialist the exact year, trim, and radio model, since the sources document historical factory systems but do not verify particular repair providers or prices.
