The Lexus IS was JD Power’s most dependable model overall in its 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study. That result makes the IS’s long-running V6 an interesting part of the story—but it does not prove the engine’s age caused the ranking. The study measures problems reported by owners of three-year-old vehicles, not the durability of the refreshed 2026 IS.
What JD Power’s 2026 award says—and what it doesn’t
JD Power named the Lexus IS the most dependable model overall in its 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study and the highest-ranked compact premium car. The study evaluates problems reported by original owners of vehicles after three years of ownership. That model-year lag matters: the award is evidence about the vehicles represented in the study, not a durability verdict on the refreshed 2026 IS.
JD Power also reported a 151 problems-per-100-vehicles (PP100) score for Lexus as a premium brand in 2026. The premium-vehicle average was 217 PP100, up eight points year over year. Neither figure is an IS-specific score, and the study result should not be presented as one. JD Power’s 2026 study release and study report provide the ranking and methodology.
Which engine is in the 2026 Lexus IS?
Lexus’s U.S. materials describe the 2026 IS 350 with a 3.5-liter V6 rated at 311 horsepower. Rear-wheel-drive models use an eight-speed automatic transmission; all-wheel-drive models use a six-speed automatic. Lexus confirms those specifications, but the official materials cited here do not identify the engine by code or verify when that specific engine family first appeared. The 12-year-old-engine framing comes from AOL’s article, which identifies the V6 as the 2GR-FKS and says it first appeared in 2014 for the 2015 model year. Those details should be understood as that article’s account, rather than as a claim independently confirmed by the Lexus sources above. AOL’s article presents the engine-age argument.
Why keeping a familiar engine could make sense
A mature powertrain can be a deliberate product choice: retaining an established engine may avoid introducing a new engine design alongside other changes. In that sense, continuity is a plausible part of the IS’s product strategy, and it may appeal to buyers who prefer a known configuration over a new powertrain. But the available evidence does not show that keeping this V6 caused the IS to rank first. JD Power’s award establishes the result for the study population; it does not isolate the engine as the reason.

It is also important not to conflate an engine’s age with a whole car’s dependability. The VDS considers owner-reported problems across vehicles, not just engine failures. A familiar engine is one piece of the vehicle, while the ranking reflects the study’s broader measure of problems.

- What the award measures: problems reported by original owners of three-year-old vehicles, not the refreshed 2026 model.
- What Lexus confirms for 2026: the IS 350’s 3.5-liter, 311-hp V6 and the distinct RWD and AWD transmission pairings.
- What remains an interpretation: that the engine’s continuity is why the IS earned its ranking.
For a shopper, the award is a useful historical signal about the IS, but it cannot guarantee how a newly refreshed 2026 example will perform. The 12-year-old-engine angle is best read as a plausible explanation for Lexus’s approach—not a cause JD Power proved.
