Why did Aaron Kaufman leave Gas Monkey Garage?

He specifically pointed to the Pantera build as an important turning point. The project was complex enough that it pushed beyond what could comfortably be completed within the show’s available time and budget. Kaufman wanted to take on vehicles at least as ambitious as the Pantera, while the production model favored smaller and faster projects.
In interviews and during the televised departure, Kaufman also referred to growing personal issues and professional differences of opinion. He said the previous five years had felt much longer and made it clear that he wanted to follow his own plans rather than take a short break and return.
Was Aaron Kaufman fired?
There is no verified public evidence that Kaufman was fired. When the departure was announced, Rawlings said the decision came “completely out of left field” and was not his decision.
There is also no documented public evidence that a single argument or scandal caused the breakup. So, the most precise answer is that he left at the end of 2016, while the televised farewell aired in 2017. Saying only “2017” is understandable if referring to the episode, but it leaves out the date of the actual announcement.
What did Aaron Kaufman do after Gas Monkey Garage?
He started Arclight Fabrication
After leaving Gas Monkey, Kaufman launched Arclight Fabrication in the Dallas area with Jonathan Mansour. The shop initially concentrated on parts and integrated build solutions for 1957–1979 Ford F-100 pickups.
That focus gave Kaufman a more specialized path than the broad, auction-oriented builds associated with Gas Monkey. He described the classic Ford truck market as underserved compared with the aftermarket for Chevrolet trucks. Arclight’s work has included fabrication, engineering, parts development, and complete performance-oriented projects.
He returned to television with Shifting Gears
Discovery followed Kaufman and his new team in Shifting Gears with Aaron Kaufman. The show centered on Arclight and gave him room to pursue larger passion projects rather than simply replicate the Gas Monkey formula.
One of the best-known builds was a 1971 International Scout converted into a street-legal, Ultra4-style race truck for the King of the Hammers event. The project demanded substantially more engineering and fabrication than a quick flip build. Discovery’s current program page lists episodes for both Season 1 and Season 2, so descriptions of the show as a one-season project are outdated.

He hosted Aaron Needs a Job
In 2019, Kaufman hosted Aaron Needs a Job, a separate Discovery series. Rather than following one shop build, the program took him around the country to explore mechanically intensive industries and specialized jobs.
The series fit Kaufman’s broader interests: fabrication, machinery, engineering, racing, and the people who make difficult mechanical work possible.
Where is Aaron Kaufman now?
As of 2026, Kaufman remains publicly associated with Arclight Fabrication and automotive fabrication work in Texas. Arclight’s official website is active, and recent automotive media continues to identify Kaufman with the company.
MagnaFlow’s The MF Show, Episode 022, published on March 18, 2026, featured Kaufman and directed viewers to follow @thearclight for current work and project updates. The episode described his post-Gas-Monkey career around his own shop, fabrication, racing, and purpose-built performance vehicles.
A Restomod Air feature published April 29, 2026, also reported that its team visited Kaufman at Arclight Fab in Grand Prairie, Texas. That is useful evidence against the idea that he disappeared after leaving television. His current public profile is tied more closely to the shop and its projects than to Fast N’ Loud.
