A mild-hybrid system could make sense in a future combustion-powered BMW M3, but BMW has not announced that it will build one. What BMW has confirmed is different: production of the first fully electric M3 is planned for Munich from 2027. Meanwhile, BMW’s new combustion 3 Series range includes 48V mild-hybrid models. Those announcements show two strands of BMW’s strategy, not two confirmed versions of the next M3.
Has BMW confirmed a mild-hybrid next-generation M3?
No. BMW’s official announcements reviewed here do not confirm that a future combustion M3 will use 48V mild-hybrid technology, or even specify the next M3’s combustion powertrain. BMW has confirmed that Munich will produce the first fully electric BMW M3 from 2027. BMW’s October 2026 announcement identifies it as a fully electric high-performance model based on BMW M Neue Klasse technology.
Separately, BMW says 48V mild-hybrid technology will feature in the 318, 320 and M350 xDrive in its new combustion 3 Series range. That establishes the technology’s presence in related models, not in an M3. BMW’s current M3 page lists gasoline inline-six versions at 503 hp and 523 hp, but those are current-generation specifications and do not establish what comes next. BMW’s current M3 specifications.
What a 48V mild hybrid does in BMW’s other 3 Series models
BMW describes the 48V system in the new combustion 3 Series as providing assistance when pulling away and accelerating, while storing energy recovered during braking. It works alongside a combustion engine; it does not make the car a plug-in hybrid or a fully electric vehicle. BMW’s announcement also says the combustion variants comply with EU7 at German launch. The M350 xDrive offers a useful example of where BMW is applying the approach in the range, but it is not an M3. BMW gives it 326 kW (443 hp), 580 Nm of torque and a 0–100 km/h time of 4.1 seconds, calling it the most powerful combustion model in the new 3 Series range and the entry point into BMW M. Why mild hybridization could suit a combustion M3
If BMW chooses to build a new combustion M3, a 48V system could complement its engine rather than replace it. The pattern BMW describes on other 3 Series models—brief assistance during launch and acceleration, plus recovery of braking energy—could be relevant to a performance car that must balance response, efficiency and emissions requirements. That is a reasoned possibility, not a disclosed M3 engineering plan.

BMW has not stated what hardware a mild-hybrid M3 would use, how much assistance it might provide, or what the effects would be on weight, output, fuel consumption, emissions or acceleration. Nor has it confirmed that such a version will be sold. Without those details, there is no sound basis for claiming a specific performance or efficiency gain.

BMW’s electric M strategy is a much larger departure than adding 48V assistance to a combustion engine. The company describes a system with four motors, individual-wheel drive and centrally controlled torque, with the front axle able to be decoupled. BMW says this arrangement is intended to combine precise traction and response with rear-wheel-focused handling and motorway efficiency; those are the manufacturer’s claims, not independent comparative test results. BMW also says the next electric M models will use 800-volt technology and a high-voltage battery with more than 100 kWh of usable energy. The company emphasizes sustained output, charging and recuperation. This is full electrification: it is not the same powertrain category as a 48V mild hybrid, which retains a combustion engine and does not plug in.
BMW’s broader argument is that electrification can create new ways to shape M driving dynamics. Dirk Häcker, then Head of Development at BMW M GmbH until December 2025, said electrification opened “completely new degrees of freedom” for M dynamics. That describes BMW’s rationale for electrification generally; it does not establish the design or future of a mild-hybrid M3. BMW M on electrification.
