You can generally ask your insurer to list anyone who lives with you or regularly drives your car. Whether a particular person must be listed, can be insured separately, or can be excluded depends on the insurer, the wording of your policy, and your state. Insurers ask who drives because a driver’s age, history, and how often they use the vehicle can affect underwriting, coverage, and premium.
What insurers need to know about drivers
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) puts the principle plainly in its consumer guidance Modern Families Have Unique Insurance Needs: “Car insurers are entitled to know who is living in your household and who drives your vehicles.” The practical duty that follows is to tell the insurer when a new resident starts driving your car, rather than waiting for a claim to reveal it.
Relationship labels alone do not settle the question. A spouse, child, relative, or roommate may need to be reported because of where they live or how they use the car, but no universal rule says every person in one of those categories must be added to every policy. The policy definitions and the insurer’s requirements control.
Who you can add, by situation
The most useful way to sort these cases is by residence and driving exposure: does the person live in the household, do they own a vehicle, and how often do they drive yours?

Spouse or partner
Ask whether the policy requires a spouse or partner to be listed, especially if they live with you or drive the car. Marital status by itself does not determine coverage, so the answer should come from the insurer’s reporting rules and your own household facts.
Teen or newly licensed child
California’s consumer guide says a standard auto policy generally covers occasional household driving. It also says an insurer may require a minor or adult of legal driving age living in the household to be permanently added to the policy, sometimes for an additional premium. The same guide says the insurer may allow the young driver to be excluded if you provide separate proof of insurance. This is a California example, not a nationwide rule; check how your own insurer and state treat a newly licensed household member before assuming either path is available.

Adult child or relative moving in
NAIC advises notifying the insurer when a new resident drives. If the newcomer owns a car, the insurer may simply want a copy of that person’s own auto policy. If the person is licensed but has no car, you may want to add them to your policy, depending on your situation and your insurer’s rules.
Roommate or other non-relative
The same practical questions apply: does the person live in your household, drive the insured car, or have regular access to it? Report the person according to the policy’s reporting rules, then ask whether they can be listed, insured separately, or excluded. Some insurers’ practices differ, so do not assume a neighbor’s arrangement or a single company’s approach applies to yours.

When someone borrows your car occasionally
Occasional use is treated differently from regular household driving, but the difference depends on the policy. California’s guide says a standard policy may cover occasional driving by household members. Maryland’s Insurance Administration advises consumers to check their policy or ask the insurer how it treats permissive drivers, meaning people allowed to drive the car with the owner’s permission but who are not listed on the policy.
Permission alone does not guarantee coverage. Coverage for a friend, visitor, or other occasional driver can turn on the policy’s permissive-use wording, exclusions, and state rules. California’s guidance also cautions drivers to review exclusions before letting others drive. Before lending your car regularly to someone outside your household, ask the insurer in writing how that person would be treated if they had an accident.

Why the insurer asks, and what non-disclosure can cost
Accurate driver information lets the insurer rate and underwrite the policy correctly. NAIC says age and driving history can affect rates. The direction and size of any premium change are individual, and adding a person does not automatically raise your price.
Failing to disclose a household driver can create problems. NAIC warns that future claims could be denied, or that a policy could be canceled or not renewed, because of misrepresentation of licensed household members. That is a risk to plan around, not a certain outcome in every case.

Changes are documented through an endorsement. An endorsement is a formal amendment to the policy contract that can add or modify coverage or exclude a driver. NAIC notes that endorsements may affect premiums and advises keeping a copy and reading the change when it arrives.
Your three options when a driver is reported
When an insurer asks about a household or regular driver, the outcome usually falls into one of three categories. The guidance reviewed does not give a premium figure for any of them, so the cost question has to go to the insurer directly.
| Option | What it means | What to confirm in writing |
|---|---|---|
| Listed on the policy | The driver is named on the policy and rated as a driver. | Premium change for this driver, and the revised declarations page or endorsement. |
| Insured separately | The driver has their own auto policy. NAIC says an insurer may want a copy of that policy; California’s guide says an exclusion may be allowed with separate proof of insurance. | Whether your insurer accepts the separate policy as proof, and what documentation it needs. |
| Excluded | The policy states that the named person is not covered when driving. | What the exclusion means for coverage if that person drives, and whether it applies to the policy as a whole or only to some vehicles. Not stated in the guidance reviewed; ask the insurer. |
What to do when someone new starts driving
- Contact your insurer or agent when someone moves in, gets licensed, or begins driving your car regularly.
- Describe the person’s situation: whether they live with you, whether they own a vehicle and have their own policy, and how often they drive your car.
- Ask whether the person must be listed, can be documented as insured separately, or can be excluded. Ask what an exclusion would mean for coverage if that person drives.
- Request the premium impact and the revised declarations page or endorsement. Read the exclusion and coverage language yourself rather than relying only on a verbal summary.
- If the answer is unclear, contact your state insurance department. California’s department advises consumers to read the policy, contact the insurer or agent with questions, and compare quotes when shopping for coverage.
Where these rules apply
This is general US consumer guidance, not a state-by-state legal survey or a reading of any individual policy. State law, insurer underwriting, residence definitions, and permissive-use provisions vary. California and Maryland are used here as examples only. For a decision about your own household, the authoritative answer is your insurer’s written reply and your state insurance department’s guidance.
